Jessie turned her head away, avoiding Jeslyns gaze.
As Albert walked off, Jeslyn kept her eyes fixed on Jessie until they vanished into the dark corridor.
Suddenly, Jessie felt lightheaded, her heart throbbing.
She gripped her chest, bewildered. Why did she feel sorry for Jeslyn? She was supposed to resent her.
Lettie shut the door, giving Jessie a stern look. Theyre gone. You have to stop seeing them! No matter what Albert says or does to win You over, you cant see him again.

Lettie let out a sigh of relief. Good! | was afraid youd soften up again.
Axells a great guy. | wont rest easy
until you marry him.
Jessie felt uneasy hearing that.
She knew Albert wasnt her Mr. Right.
But she wasnt sure about Axel either. Shed only met his folks once but already hadnt exactly hit it off with them.
But who knew what the future held?
She trudged back to her room. It was midnight, but sleep eluded her.
She pulled back the curtain a bit, lost in thought.
The rain poured down hard, like a million tiny needles jabbing at everything in its path.
She watched as the door of the black car swung open, and the driver stepped out, holding the door for Albert and Jeslyn. Albert pressed Jeslyns head on his chest and hopped into the car. Since he didnt have an umbrella, he got soaked, but Jeslyn stayed dry in his arms.

Jessie panicked and quickly shut the curtain. She didnt want Jeslyn to get any false hopes.
Because she couldnt be her mother.
Later, Jessie sneaked a peek through the curtain. Jeslyn rested her head on Alberts shoulder, looking disappointed, her bright eyes clouded with sadness Jessie reminded herself not to get soft-hearted.
Outside, Albert set the little girl down by the car and glanced up at Jessies window before getting in.
His gaze lingered for about five seconds.
Then he climbed into the car.
