Mia wasn't exactly known for her sharp wit; she had a short fuse, especially when provoked. The snide remarks from a clique of
mean girls only fueled her rage as she grabbed Zoey by the hair, intent on slamming her head against the wall.
But, as if scripted by scosmic playwright, someone chose that moment to knock on the restroom door.
It was always the same. Just when she was getting her sadistic kicks, someone would interrupt her fun in the ladies’ room.
Mia rolled her eyes and let go of Zoey's hair.
"You got lucky this time," she hissed. "And lettell you something, sweetie, stop dreaming about my brother. He's way out of
your league."
With that, Mia flipped her hair disdainfully and glanced at her posse.
"Let's go."
"Mia, we're just gonna let her off, just like that?" one of the girls whined.
"People are coming. If word gets out, it won't look good for us," Mia replied curtly.
After all, Zoey was representing Star Movie Group, a company with sclout in the industry. If it got out that Mia and her crew
were bullying Zoey, there'd be hell to pay.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe Haskins family might help Mia squash the bad press, but she worried about her brother taking an interest in Zoey again, and
that could lead to a whole other set of problems.
Better to keep it low-key, she thought, dragging Zoey to the restroom whenever the mood struck and tormenting her until she
couldn't take it anymore and left Greenfield for good.
A smug smile spread across Mia's face at the thought. Her future sister-in-law would be one of the rich young ladies, not someone
like Zoey.
Zoey, meanwhile, had slipped into a stall the moment they'd opened the door. She expertly touched up her makeup and changed
her outfit, always carrying a spare dress in her bag to conceal any signs of the ordeal she'd been through.
She meticulously wiped the stains from her neck with tissues, tossed the ruined dress in the trash, and pulled out a compact mirror
to reapply her makeup. Only when she was sure no one could tell what had happened did she step back out.
But she froze upon seeing the man leaning against the wall, smoking a cigarette. It was Fitch.
The corridor's dim lighting did little to obscure him from her recognition. She lowered her gaze, feigning composure as she tried to
walk past without a word.
For the past few weeks, she had done things that made her despise herself—calling him numerous times only to be blocked,
sending messages that met the sfate, even degrading herself by seeking him out. They had acknowledged their relationship
in that villa. Even if it was to end, she wanted to hear it from him, not through the coldness of a screen.
But Fitch had refused to see her, treating her like a virus. Now, she had managed to collect her emotions, yet the sight of him still
made her heart sour.
Who was to blbut herself for giving her heart away too easily?
She quickened her pace, hoping to make it back to her car, but his voice stopped her.
"Did you cause trouble for Mia?"
His question felt like a punch to her gut. Anyone who knew Zoey even slightly would understand she wasn't one to cause scenes
with socialites, much less go looking for trouble.
Fitch's assumption made it clear he didn't know her at all.
She felt as if something was squeezing her heart, her clenched hand throbbing with pain.
"No."
If only there was a switch in this world that could retract all feelings at the push of a button. If such a thing existed, she'd trade
everything to possess it.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"It's hard not to suspect when you both cout one after the other," he said.
The light was too dim, and with Zoey avoiding facing him directly, he could only make out her profile. Something about her face
seemed off.
Without a word, Zoey tried to move on, fearing any further delay would bring tears.
But Fitch wasn't done with her.
"Don't mess with Mia. you can afford to offend her."
His sister had bullied her, and here he was, the protective brother, warning her away as if Zoey had no one in her corner.
