Zoey's final words struck the air with such force that the room fell silent. After draining the last drops from her glass, she placed
the empty goblet back on the tray with a polite nod and smiled wryly at the gathered crowd. "Excuse me," she said, threading her
way through the throng of people and heading toward the exit.
Her words had been crystal clear, and it didn't take long for the whispers to start buzzing around her. Indeed, if Belinda truly loved
her daughter, would she go to such lengths to set her up in such a public setting? To orchestrate such a humiliation? It was a
calculated move to make Zoey a spectacle.
Zoey had fought tooth and nail to get where she was now, and everybody knew she was the hardest worker at Star Movie Group.
Yet, behind her back, she had a mother who was scheming to bring her down. Who could withstand such betrayal?
Pity replaced the scorn in the eyes of onlookers.
Belinda's face had turned ashen. She hadn't expected Zoey to play her cards so ruthlessly. She thought it was all that damn Maja's
fault!
Shaking with anger, Belinda turned to speak to Fitch, but before she could utter a word, she felt a chill settle over her.
"Scram," Fitch spat out coldly, motioning to his bodyguard to remove the disturbance.
Belinda was terrified of him; his gaze seemed to flay her alive. She was so petrified that she couldn't even squeak out a protest.
Her husband, attempting to intervene, received a sharp kick to the gut from the bodyguard.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtBelinda adored this man to her soul; she would have taken the blow herself if she could.
"Dammit, are you trying to kill him?" she cried out. "Honey, honey, are you okay? | knew it, Zoey's a heartless wench, just
forgetting about us now that she's made scash. Don't you worry, I'll think of something else!"
Everyone else could only roll their eyes.
Zoey was her own daughter, and yet Belinda's heart was so twisted. To speak such words in front of a crowd, it was clear she must
have bad-mouthed her daughter even worse in private.
Having such a mother, one could only wonder what sins Zoey had committed in a past life.
The hall returned to a hushed silence, the focus shifting from Zoey to Belinda.
What kind of life must a woman have led to place a man above her own well-being, as if she couldn't survive without him?
It was beyond their comprehension.
Wendy, noticing that the crowd wasn't ridiculing Zoey as she'd anticipated, felt a wave of irritation. She clung to Fitch's arm, trying
to say something, but felt him trying to shake her off.
"Fitch, aren't we supposed to let everyone know we're dating tonight?" she reminded him.
That statement made him pause. Indeed, tonight was supposed to be about announcing his relationship with Wendy.
He didn't push her away.
Wendy, triumphant, delicately rested against his arm, her demure demeanor capturing everyone's attention.
"So, the Bennitts and the Haskins have a thing going on, huh?"
"Wendy just got back and she's already snagged Mr. Haskins?"
"They've been childhood sweethearts, and both families have always been close."
"Congratulations are in order then."
The crowd began to offer their felicitations.
Wendy looked at Fitch with shy pride, her lips curling into a content smile. Her gaze followed Zoey's retreating figure, eyes
gleaming with victory. The night's was far from over, and she had made her preparations.
She picked up a glass of wine and took a slow, triumphant sip, already buzzing with excitement.
The atmosphere in the hall normalized, and the guests returned to their conversations and fine wines as if the earlier scene had
never happened.
Suddenly, Wendy doubled over, a trickle of blood staining her lips. The crowd was stunned.
Pale as a ghost, Wendy looked into her wine glass.
"Fitch, there's something wrong with this wine," she uttered before collapsing.
Fitch, right beside her, instinctively caught her.
A server whispered nearby, "Zoey's mother touched that glass earlier. Maybe she doesn't like Ms. Bennitt."
If Belinda saw Fitch as her future son-in-law, it was plausible she would resent Wendy.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmFitch's expression darkened instantly. He scooped up Wendy and headed straight to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Zoey had walked a mile away.
Despite her composed facade at the party, inside she was a wreck. Knowing driving was out of the question, she aimlessly
wandered forward.
Lost in her thoughts, she remembered Fitch's incredulous look and felt a piercing pain in her heart.
Suddenly, a car pulled up behind her, and she was swept off her feet by a powerful force.
"Letgo!"
Zoey couldn't see who had grabbed her; she only felt the car drive a short distance before she was dumped onto the pavement.
It was raining, and the fog was dense. She could only make out the last two letters of the car's license plate before a blinding set of
headlights bore down on her.
