She had intended to cclean with him after Listina's surgery, but the right moment just never seemed to cup.
Now he must have run into her dad. Did Abner go straight to Felix? Panic set in.
"Carol, so you're really a high society girl, huh?"
Carol's first instinct was to hang up the phone. After she did, regret washed over her, and she quickly called him again.
But Felix didn't pick up. He just watched the phone vibrate on the table, a cigarette dangling between his fingers as he stared off
into space.
Carol knew she was in trouble and immediately called Abner. This time, Abner picked up promptly.
"Dad, what on earth did you say to Felix?!"
Hearing her accusatory tone, Abner couldn't help but laugh with irritation.
"If someone hadn't snapped a photo of you two, how long were you planning on keeping this from me? Have you been avoiding
coming hthese past few months because of this guy?"
Carol felt a twinge of guilt. She had been deceiving both ends and knew the day of reckoning would come, but it had arrived
sooner than expected.
"Dad, | really like him. We've been together for nearly six months, and he's been taking such good care of me."
"Weren't you well taken care of at the Miller family villa by those maids?"
Carol felt a sting at the comparison, as if Felix were just a caretaker.
"Dad, | know my past relationships haven't been the most reliable, but this tit's different. | really care for him, and if you got to
know him, you'd like him too."

His tone made it clear that he was seriously angry. Carol was at a loss for words, but then she heard Abner continue.
"I know you, Carol. You're just smitten with his looks. Cback, and I'll find you someone better-looking, someone who matches
our family's status. You're young; don't be foolish."
With that, Abner hung up.
He knew his daughter too well. She had never really struggled in life, and to her, earning 400 a month was no different from
earning 4 million. Once she experienced what it was like to earn just 400, she would realize how fortunate she was.
Abner gave her three days and had no intention of persuading her. He had his own methods.
Carol stared at the dark screen, feeling dejected. She lay on the couch in defeat, but then she thought of Felix and forced herself to
sit up.
Breaking up with Felix was not an option. Just the thought of it made her whole body ache. She tried calling Felix again, but he still
didn't answer.
Carol also didn't go to her job at the diner anymore. Her secret was out, so she just wallowed in her apartment, hoping each day
that he'd cback to her. But two days passed without a word from Felix or him coming over to cook for her.
If she were in Felix's shoes, she'd probably be angry too. Carol didn't want to wait any longer. She got up and headed to the
hospital. Listina hadn't woken up yet, so she waited outside the room, like a hunter lying in wait.
At 8 PM, Felix did show up, carrying a bouquet of flowers. Carol thought they were for her and her heart leapt.
"Felix, you're not mad atanymore?"
She reached for the flowers and wrapped one arm around his waist.
"lI know | messed up, but surely you're not blameless, right?"
A high-society lady indeed, able to wriggle out of responsibility adeptly.
A wry smile threatened to break through his face. Carol seized the moment, her face all but begging for forgiveness.
"See, you smiled. That means you're not mad. | didn't mean for any of this to happen."
She was about to say more when her phone rang - it was Abner calling. Tomorrow was the deadline Abner had set. He was probably
calling to remind her.
Carol kissed Felix on the cheek and scurried away to take the call. Felix wiped his cheek where she had kissed him and listened as
she argued with her father on the other end.
"He's a great guy, Dad. I'll bring him home, and you can see for yourself. What do you mean I'm bewitched? So you think I'm just a
fool? I really do like him, Dad. Please."
Suddenly, Felix felt the urge to smoke again. He pushed open the door and went inside. Listina was still lying in the bed, and once
the door shut, Carol's voice was cut off.
Felix sat down beside the bed in the quiet room, knowing his presence wasn't necessary until Listina woke up, but he wanted to be
there anyway.
Outside, the conversation ended, and Carol waited, mindful of Listina's dislike for her. She kept replying to Abner's messages.
Inside, a chilling text message appeared on Felix's phone.
[If you don't leave her, you might end up like your family.]
Upon seeing the message, Felix's expression turned ice-cold. He smirked bitterly and deleted the message, but it was quickly sent
again.

Felix's grip on his phone tightened as he heard a sound from the bed. Listina was waking up. She opened her eyes ahead of
schedule and now was looking blankly at the ceiling
"Felix?"
Her voice was hoarse as she called out, tears streaming down, "I dreamed of my mom, and your parents, too. We were kids playing
in the yard, and your dad told you not to bother me."
"You've just had surgery. Don't talk."
"I want to talk; | have so much to say. Life's so unfair."
"Listina, the surgery was a success. We have plenty of tahead of us."
She closed her eyes; because of his words, her mood was lifted a bit, "I know, Felix. Thank you."
Felix reached for a tissue and wiped her forehead.
