Cheeks flushed with the sting of her slap, Felix bore the imprint of her hand - five red marks.
Regret flickered across her face; never before had she struck him with such force. But the rage simmering in her chest refused to
dissipate, and tears welled in her eyes.
“I'held on, Felix! Now you're dumping me? What happened to our promises? What about everything you assuredof before?”
He dabbed at the corner of his mouth, his expression calm.
“Promises? Oh, that was just lip service, Carol. Besides, you can be pretty tic yourself.”
Her hand connected with his face again, harder this time, swelling his cheek. It was Carol doing the hitting, but it was as if she was
the one who couldn't see clearly, her vision fogged with unshed tears that began to fall.
Felix touched his reddening face, his voice even more detached, “Let's just end it here.”
He turned to leave, but Carol's arms wrapped around him from behind.
“Don't break up with me. Where did | go wrong? If you don't tell me, how can | know? Are you dumpingbecause | can't cook? |
can learn, Felix. | don't want us to end.”
Her grip was tight, painfully so, but the real pain seemed to stem from somewhere deeper within him.
Felix's lips pressed into a thin line, the recent text from Abner causing a ripple in his otherwise placid demeanor. But it quickly

Carol mistook his silence for capitulation and was about to soften her words, to apologize, when she felt his hand on hers. With a
forceful twist, he pried her fingers loose.
Carol was already short-fused, her anger flaring anew.
“Oh, | see how it is, Felix. You think you're such a catch, huh? Fine, go then! We're done! Lettell you, | can find someone better
in a heartbeat, but you'll never find anyone as amazing asagain!”
She shoved him away and stormed into her bedroom, slamming the door so hard the walls seemed to shake.
Outside the bedroom, Felix didn't hesitate before leaving. Behind the door, Carol listened intently for any sign of his return, but
there was only silence. No footsteps.
She had assumed he would ccrawling back soon enough. When they had first gotten together, she had endured some
grievances for his sake, but as twent on, Felix had been attentive, catering to her every whim, and they had rarely argued. And
now, she had slapped him, not once but twice.
Who else would put up with such a temper? Regret washed over her as she peeked through the crack in the door, only to find
darkness in the living room. Felix was gone, and he'd even turned off the lights.
Fuming, Carol switched the lights back on and dashed into the hallway. Empty. He was probably already outside the apartment
complex by now.
Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her phone to call him. One call ignored. She called again, still no answer.
Trembling with rage, she went back to the living room and slumped onto the sofa, eyes falling on a discarded shrimp in the trash.
She felt aggrieved and hoodwinked by whatever spell he'd cast on her.
Sure, he was handsome, but what else? Her gaze drifted to the kitchen, remembering the meals he'd prepare, and her resentment
melted away in an instant.
Actually, Felix had so many merits. One moment she was furious, the next she was justifying his every action, torturing herself with
the contradictions.
She snapped a picture of her legs, and sent it to him.
[It's freezing. I'm so mad | can't sleep. Guess I'll crash on the couch tonight. Don't worry about me. We're broken up, after all.]
[The weather's as bleak as my mood. | think I'm catching a cold - you know how weak my constitution is.]
[Didn't even have dinner. Now my stomach hurts. If you really cared about me, could you stand to seesuffer? Guess | was
wrong about you.]
[Why aren't you replying? Did you block me?]
Message after message sank into the void, with no response.

him again - for two slaps hadn't been nearly enough to quell her anger.
Determined to punish herself, she spent the night on the couch, shivering until morning when she awoke dizzy and disoriented.
Sick for the first tin ages, she fired off another message.
[Got a fever. I'm so pitiful. Fought with Dad, and now someone wants to break up with me.]
Meanwhile, Felix, carrying a bouquet of flowers, had already made his way to Listina's hospital room.
