Felix had no idea how Carol managed it. She'd chwith a raging fever, and two days later, she was messaging him with
news of her success.
[Felix, my dad said yes. It's awesome. I'll cover this afternoon to pick you up and take you to the new job.]
Reading the text, Felix didn't feel happy; his heart clenched with worry. His fingers hovered over his phone's screen for ages,
unsure how to respond.
[What's up? You've been typing forever but haven't sent anything.]
Carol followed up with a barrage of question marks, her tone taking on a pitiful edge.
[But seriously, my dad's really mad this time.]
[Carol, how did you get him to agree?]
Abner, that sly fox, had actually agreed. Carol really was his Achilles’ heel.
[I just knelt all afternoon, you know? | was still feverish; he couldn't stand it.]
Felix's cigarette pack was empty again. Rubbing his temples, he knew her act all too well. Especially with people close to her, she
could be as tic as she wanted, because those who were loved could afford to be fearless.
With Carol being Abner's only daughter, how could he not indulge her? Felix fell silent, standing in his rented room, staring blankly
at the sky outside.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtNathan called him up, "So, have you made up your mind? This is your best shot, man. If you miss out now, there might not be
another one. Take advantage of the fact that Carol's into you right now."
Nathan was all for Felix taking the job, ranting and cursing for a few minutes.
"Felix, you know about lan, right? Damn, no wonder | got shipped off to Crystalbrook Valley. It was his doing. He must've held a
grudge over that charade | pulled for Ms. Pennyfeather, pretending to be her husband. Damn power struggles, always the little
guys who get caught in the crossfire. But hey, | scored a car worth 50 grand out of it, so not all bad. You see how these rich folks let
money slip through their fingers? Just enough for us to rise above our station."
Felix let him go on without replying. Eventually, Nathan also felt the conversation grow stale.
After a while, Felix finally spoke, "I'm thinking about joining the Miller Group."
"Good on you for seeing the light. If it wasn't for Abner, would your parents have had that accident? Would Listina's? They owe you,
and if Listina's folks were still around, she'd be living the high life too instead of suffering with us all these years."
Felix had made up his mind, and he was not one to regret his decisions. And now, everything was slowly moving in the direction he
had hoped for. There was nothing to hesitate about.
Later, while Carol was ill, Felix didn't regret making her sign that contract, nor did he think he ever would.
Carol always trusted him, convinced that the contract would bring huge benefits to the Miller Group, unaware that it was actually a
share transfer agreement. Only Felix knew the truth.
There were many in the Miller Group who resented Abner's indulgence of his daughter, which had caused no small amount of
trouble.
Those with ambition in the Miller Group wanted a leader devoid of such emotional attachments. Abner had missed a couple of
opportunities to expand overseas, simply to spend more twith Carol.
In all the years he accompanied Carol as she grew up, he had given too much as a father. And so, despite the Miller Group being
the largest jewelers domestically, its international fwas limited.
Felix used this, and the contract, to rally a faction to his side. Yet Carol knew none of this. She continued to deliver meals to Felix
daily, meals prepared especially by a chef.
Since Felix had joined the Miller Group, Abner hadn't been as harsh on Carol. She moved back into her own villa, even bringing
over a star-rated chef from the Miller family's staff.
On the day Carol was delivering a meal, Abner's call cthrough, "You're the daughter of the Miller family, delivering food to a
junior employee? Do you want to drag my reputation down with you?"
Carol's cheeks burned with embarrassment. She'd been looked after by Felix for months, and now that her relationship with him
was public, she naturally wanted to treat him well.
And it was just a meal delivery, after all, made by the housekeeper, not her.
"Dad, who snitched to you?"
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"You dare to ask? Carol, you're naive. This will only make Felix a target."
Carol frowned; she hadn't considered that. After hanging up, she entered Felix's department.
At the sight of Carol, the others couldn't take their eyes off her, coughing mockingly.
Felix sat calmly at his desk, buried in paperwork - most of which he wasn't even supposed to handle. Clearly, his colleagues had
dumped their work on him.
Anger surged within Carol, "Who did this?"
Before she could say more, Felix took the lunchbox from her hand.
Seeing the mountain of files on his desk, Carol cupped his face in her hands, "Do you think you're spushover? They're
obviously making things hard for you on purpose, and you just take it? I'm going to talk to my dad about this."
"Carol." He called out, "Leave it be. It's fine this way."
