After leaving the place, Carol hummed a tune as she headed back to her Maserati.
There had been a whirlwind of events in Greenfield recently. lan had gone abroad, and Maja was about to leave as well.
Carol hadn't shared much about her own affairs with Maja, knowing her friend had plenty on her plate.
She figured that once she got married, she'd just send Maja an invitation, which would surely give her the surprise of her life.
There was a thrilling sense of accomplishment in doing big things quietly, and Carol couldn't help but smile.
She had already thought about marrying Felix. As soon as her father gave his blessing, she'd rush to try on wedding gowns!
But while Carol was still lost in daydreams of matrimony, she had just returned to her villa when she received a call from Abner's
assistant.
"Ms. Miller, the president has been hospitalized. You should come."
Carol felt a tremor in her heart. Abner had always been in good health; how could he suddenly be hospitalized?
Without a moment's delay, she sped off to the hospital.
Abner had just been brought out of the emergency room, looking pale and frail. Tears welled up in Carol's eyes as she reached out
to hold his hand.
"Dad, what happened?"
Abner coughed twice and glared at her.
"What's with the tears? It's not like I'm on my deathbed."
"Don't talk like that, Dad. You're supposed to live a long, healthy life!"
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtCarol rubbed her eyes fiercely.
"Is it because of my situation with Felix? Have you been worrying yourself sick over us? I'm so sorry, Dad. Maybe you really should
find a younger woman and have another son."
At that, Abner's coughing grew worse. The assistant hurriedly interjected, "Ms. Miller, maybe you should hold back on the
comments."
Carol clapped a hand over her mouth, looking cautiously at Abner.
"Dad, | feel so guilty, truly."
"Carol, what if my health really doesn't hold up and I insist you break up with Felix?"
"I would break it off without hesitation, but | doubt I'd ever be happy again."
Abner's furrowed brow relaxed slightly, and a faint smile crept across his lips, "At least | haven't raised you for nothing."
Carol was anxious. She had rarely seen her father in a hospital gown since she was a child.
"What's actually going on with you? I'll go ask the doctor."
"It's nothing serious. It's just that the shareholders have been pushing to expand overseas. I'm getting old, and | don't have that
sort of ambition anymore. | don't want to exhaust myself."
Carol was aware of the situation. The shareholders had caused a fuss before. But Abner held a significant share in the company,
giving him a veto power.
His reluctance to expand was largely because he didn't want to pour all his energy into the business. Carol had needed him; a
single cry from her, and he'd have to rush to her side, sometimes even taking her to meetings, which naturally caused
dissatisfaction among sshareholders.
However, the Miller Group was an empire built by the Miller family, and even if they were dissatisfied, they had no choice but to
accept it.
But as Abner grew older, the voices of dissent grew louder. Sometimes, he even considered cashing out his shares and living out
his years in peace, which would give him more tto spend with Carol.
But the Miller Group was a legacy passed down from the older generations - it couldn't end with him.
“Dad, rest up. I'll find a professor to teachfinance right away, to take over the business, okay?”
In previous years, all Carol fancied was to go on binges, barely realizing this stuff. Abner pampered her to the extent that he'd
never forced her to learn, nor had he mentioned the future of the Miller Group was relying on her.
Daughters needed to be coddled, not to be urged on. The Miller family property was enough for her to make any choice herself,
even if she just intended to be a parasite.
That was also what his wife told him right before she passed away; he'd kept it in mind until now.
"If you can even say that, I'm somewhat impressed."
Carol deflated instantly, "With everything going on, you still have jokes?"
"Carol, I'm serious. I'm getting old, and the Miller family does need to find a successor. As for Felix, let him keep working his way
up."
Carol had wanted to speak out against the unfair treatment Felix had been subjected to, but seeing her father like this, she
couldn't utter a word.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmShe held onto Abner's hand, overhearing him instruct his assistant.
"Keep an eye on those projects for me."
"Of course, Mr. Miller."
After staying at the hospital for a couple of hours, Carol left reluctantly. As she stepped into the elevator, she overheard two
doctors talking.
"Listina's doing well lately. Looks like she'll grow old with her fiancé after all. That guy's a keeper. Too bad my daughter can't find
someone like that."
"True, not many men would stick around that long."
It was the first tCarol heard about Listina having a fiancé.
