The groomsmen were all new business partners he'd met after climbing the social ladder, with the exception of his one true friend, Nathan.
As he glanced over at the groomsmen's area, he noticed Nathan's absence, which caused his brow to furrow slightly.
He was about to call Nathan-where could he possibly be at a critical tlike this?-but then his phone rang. With a hint of cheer in his voice, he answered.
"Mr. Brown, it appears Ms. Miller has taken a runner from the wedding." His initially upturned lips instantly drooped, and his eyes darkened.
"What about the car?" "We're in pursuit, but suddenly there's a slew of trucks on the road blocking us, and we've lost track of Mrs. Brown," the voice on the other end explained.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtFelix yanked off his tie, hopped into the wedding limo parked beside him, and floored the accelerator, speeding away in an instant. Outside, the guests who had been waiting were exchanging puzzled looks, clueless about what had just happened. But they knew something was up when Felix drove off like a bat out of hell.
Thankfully, the master of ceremonies was a pro; he ushered the guests into the hotel to wait.
Felix pushed the pedal to the metal and flicked on the GPS tracker, which showed a red dot moving away towards Greenfield.
He quickly shared the location with his crew and kept his bloodshot eyes on the road ahead. For a moment, nothing else existed in his mind but the need for speed.
Then a helicopter appeared in the sky. Drawing a deep breath, he abandoned the limo and signaled the chopper to pick him up. His sharp suit was now a mess, but he didn't care. Once aboard the helicopter, his gaze was fixed on the red dot shown on his phone.
The bracelet he had given Carol had a tracking device installed, and he knew it would cin handy one day—just not this soon. It was obvious Carol wanted out. She was planning to leave eventually.
That's why he had tampered with the bracelet, determined to follow her wherever she went.
He was aware that the n'Felix' had been erased from her future plans a long tago.
The helicopter flew towards the horizon.
Below, Felix could see cars racing out of city. He pursed his lips et silent one but the tension was palpable two men standing beside him.
He took the binoculars someone handed him and, upon recognizing the driver of one of the cars below, felt a pang of pain.
But the betrayal by Nathan wasn't nearly as crushing as Carol's attempt to flee.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmHis eyelashes fluttered down as he dialed Nathan's number.
Hearing no answer, he kept calling.
Nathan knew the cat was out of the bag about eloping with Carol, and Felix was surely on their tail by now.
Carol wasn't naive; she had no illusions about evading capture for long, but she needed to pull this off.
Glancing at the incessantly ringing phone, she curled up her lips into a smile.
"Answer it," she urged.
After a glance in the rear-view mirror, Nathan hit the receive button.
Felix's cold and dark voice cthrough, "Pull over." Nathan took a deep breath, his grip on the phone tightening. "I won't." "Nathan, do you even realize what you're doing?" "I do, Felix. Remember when you asked if I was in love? Well, I am. With Carol." Felix's head felt like it had exploded, but instead of anger, a laugh burst forth It was bizarre how extrfury could make one want to laugh. "You think she's into you?" et That got under Nathan's skin, and his voice cracked as he retorted, "And who says she's into you? Remember your birthday, outside the break room? Do you know what she and I were doing inside? We were kissing!" Silence fell on the other end of the line.
Nathan immediately regretted the words as they left his mouth, a wave of panic washing over him.
But he clenched his teeth, determined not to show any fear.
