Chapter 85
A prolonged silence had fallen.
Burton was catching the constant glances from Eileen. He couldn’t help but ask, “Are you trying to piss
me off on purpose? You know damn well Elaine is my sister!”
Eileen, slapping Burton’s shoulder, said loudly, “A good bro should always protect his sis!”
At this point, Egbert sighed, removed Eileen’s hand from Burton’s shoulder, and muttered, “I’m out.”
Eileen frowned at him, “Don’t butt in when I’m discussing.”
Egbert walked straight to the tree.
“Hey!” Eileen grabbed his sleeve.
Egbert turned around, speaking softly, “Don’t worry, there’s a good distance between the ribbon and the
wasp nest. I’ll go from behind. I got this.”
“No way, it’s too risky!” Eileen bit her lip, fell silent for a moment, and finally said, “Fine, we’ll go another
way.”
Egbert looked at her. Burton eagerly asked, “What’s the plan?”
Eileen didn’t answer, just bent down and started searching the ground. She quickly gathered a bunch of
small rocks and pine shells, filled her hat with them, and started walking.
After two steps, she noticed the guys weren’t following her. She yelled impatiently, “Are you coming or
no?”
Egbert fell silent for a moment, then he followed. Burton trailed behind too. Soon, the trio reached a hill
a distance away from the wasp
nest.
Eileen instructed, “Wrap your heads with your jackets and find somewhere to hide.”
Burton asked in bewilderment, “What on earth are you planning to do?”
“You’ll see.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWithout further explanation, Eileen climbed the tallest tree nearby and sat on a branch. She removed
her hair tie, and her hair cascaded down like a waterfall.
Egbert looked up from the ground, his gaze fixated on her sharp and elegant face, a hint of amusement
flashed in his eyes. When he turned back, he found Burton staring dumbfoundedly.
Egbert frowned, smacked Burton on the head, and coldly said, “Focus.”
Burton snapped back to reality, his cheeks turning red as he wrapped his head with his jacket, “She…
she’s quite pretty…”
Egbert asked, “Still pretty when she’s beating you up?”
Burton suddenly remembered the man who had three broken ribs, no patch of good skin left, and a
swollen face that barely resembled a human’s! His face drained of all color instantly.
Burton said in a pale tone, “Sorry… I was wrong…”
Egbert chuckled, put his hat on, and took a few steps back.
Eileen used her hair tie as a slingshot, and the rocks and shells as ammo. Sitting in the tall tree, she
took aim at the tree with the wasp
nest.
Burton figured out her intention and whispered, “Is she trying to knock down the nest?”
Egbert calmly replied, “No.”
Burton questioned, “Why not? Isn’t she aiming for it?”
“If she was aiming for the nest, she wouldn’t need so long. She’s trying to….
A sound suddenly rang out. Next, they heard a “thump”, the sound of a rock hitting the tree trunk.
Burton squinted to get a clearer look and was stunned, “Is she aiming for the red ribbon? It’s tied to the
tree. If she could untie the ribbon directly, she could avoid the wasp nest. But, how could she possibly
shoot down a tied ribbon with a slingshot?”
Egbert remained silent.
Then, another sound. This time, the stone hit where the ribbon was tied.
“Does that count as a hit?” Burton mumbled, “But it’s no use…”
Those who also thought it was no use were the ones commenting on the live stream.
[Eileen can’t seriously be trying to shoot down the ribbon, can she?]
How is that possible? How can you untie something by hitting it?]
The show’s producers are ruthless. Even if they want to increase the difficulty, they don’t have to tie the
clue next to a wasp nest. Those are wasps, they’re life-threatening.]
-[But I have to say, Eileen’s slingshot aim is accurate. Apart from the first adjustment, she’s been hitting
the ribbon’s tying spot every time.]
-[Look, the tying spot has been hit so many times it’s almost breaking, but it’s impossible to untie a
ribbon with a slingshot, this is just…. Woah!]
-[Woah, woah, woah!!!]
-(!!!)
-[The, the ribbon, how did it fall down???]
Burton watched as the two pieces of ribbon fell and landed on the ground, and he was utterly stunned.
A smile surfaced on Egbert’s face, and he explained, “The spot where the ribbon was tied was
repeatedly hit, and due to the intense friction, it eventually snapped in two.”
With the tying spot broken, the two ends of the ribbon naturally fell to the ground.
Eileen wasn’t trying to loosen the ribbon by hitting it. From the beginning, she wanted to snap it off.
Even if the ribbon was in two pieces, the words inside could still be read, right? They needed the
information, not the intact ribbon.
Eileen then jumped down from the tree, emptied the remaining rocks and shells from her hat, dusted it
off, walked over and picked up the two pieces of the ribbon. She read the words on it, then walked over
to Egbert and handed him the ribbon to read.
Egbert read out the words, “Southeast.”
Eileen picked up her backpack from the ground, slung it over her shoulder, and said, “Let’s head
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmsoutheast then.”
As she finished, she noticed Burton standing there, frozen like a statue. She looked at him puzzled,
“What’s wrong with you? Got stung by a wasp?”
Burton finally snapped back to reality, his face a mix of awe and excitement as he said loudly to Eileen,
“You’re really incredible!”
Eileen clicked her tongue, finding him a bit annoying. She said dismissively, “Like I need you to tell me
I’m awesome. Let’s move.”
With that, she headed southeast.
In the camp outside the rainforest, an officer, hands behind his back, watched Eileen’s performance on
the screen, and couldn’t help but praise, “She’s smart.”
The show’s director laughed, “Isn’t this your idea? To let them cut the ribbon and get the information.”
The officer smiled and said, “I didn’t think that anyone would actually get this clue.”
“Yeah, even if they think about cutting it off, who knows how to do it? So not only do they have to come
up with a method to cut it off, they also need the ability to do it remotely. That’s a big challenge, they
might as well climb up and get it directly.”
The officer chuckled again, “This girl, she’s indeed gifted, quick-witted too. It’s a shame though, if she
had joined the military academy last year, she would be my student by now.”
“Captain,” a soldier charged in, “Your phone call.”
The officer took the phone, listened for a while, his expression changed, he responded loudly to the
person on the other end of the call, “Yes! I promise to complete the mission!”
After hanging up the phone, the director of the production team asked him, “What happened?”
The officer said seriously, “I got a call from higher up. Apparently, an important figure is coming and I
have to take care of him.”
“An important figure? We’re in the middle of shooting a show, who would come here?”
The officer shrugged, “I have no idea. All I know is that it’s an old gentleman, his flight arrives this
afternoon.”
