Josiah snorted with a sneer, “Good luck having any say in what happens once you’re there!”
Amiee glared at him, irritation flaring in her gaze. “Can’t you ever say something positive? If you’ve got nothing
nice to say, then zip it!”
A tightness clutched at Josiah’s chest, and he furrowed his brow in pain before rising to get some fresh air on the
balcony.
If he’d known it would be like this, he would’ve wished for fewer assignments, not more.
“Didn’t you used to work under Gab? Aren’t you worried about blowing your cover if you go back now?” Amiee
questioned.
Estelle’s voice was calm, detached. “I won’t be recognized. Not many have seen my face, and those from
Wolverine’s gang who did are mostly pushing up daisies thanks to me.”
“So, when do we make our move?” Amiee asked.

delays for her,” Estelle replied.
Amiee nodded. “Is there anything you need from me in the meantime?”
“Yes,” Estelle said. “I’m heading back to C City tomorrow. You’ll come with me. We’ll probably stay a couple of
days.”
Without hesitation, Amiee agreed. “Sure thing.”
“We’ll set off at nine in the morning.”
“No problem.”
Estelle smiled faintly. “Alright, that’s all for now. It’s late; take Josiah and get some rest.”
Suddenly, Josiah stepped forward. “I’m coming with you. No matter what, I have to be there!”
Estelle regarded him coolly. “Remember the agreement you signed when you joined Eagle Valley?”
Josiah’s face went pale, his teeth clenched. “I’m not representing Goshawk. I’m going to protect you for Jonah’s
sake!”
“People will be there to meet me. Your presence might just complicate things,” Estelle stated with a resolute gaze.
“Follow orders, trust Snow Hawk without question. No rogue actions!”
Josiah opened his mouth to protest, but Amiee cut him off. “Stick to the boss’s plan!”
“Let’s head back. I’ll walk you out,” Estelle stood up.
Josiah’s face was the picture of reluctance.
On the way back, Josiah was driving, his heart a maelstrom of frustration ready to explode.
“You should trust the boss,” Amiee said calmly.
Josiah frowned deeply. “You’ve never been to Tripe. You have no idea what the Citadel is like.”
“Have you been there?” Amiee inquired.
Speaking gravely, Josiah confessed, “Out of curiosity, I sneaked in once. Almost didn’t make it out alive.”
The Citadel was a lawless place where murder went unpunished, and illegitimate transactions were shockingly

up—they were dumped carelessly, and the mass graves around the Citadel had multiplied.
The things he’d witnessed there had shaken his beliefs to the core, and it had taken him a long time to find his
equilibrium afterward.
Amiee stared out into the night. “Even so, we have to trust her.”
Josiah’s eyes were cold. “What’s the boss taking you to C City for?”
“If I’m not mistaken, it’s probably to throw Jonah off the scent,” Amiee speculated.
Josiah’s expression darkened. “If Jonah finds out, I can’t even begin to imagine his reaction.”
The next morning, Estelle and Amiee set off for C City. By evening, when Jonathan video-called her, she was already
at the Jarvis residence.
Estelle explained that her work with the film crew was done and that she was spending a few days with her
grandfather at home.
Jonathan, of course, suspected nothing.
Magdalen’s wedding was fast approaching, and the Sampson family was all hands on deck with the celebrations. It
was a couple of days before Magdalen even realized that both Estelle and Jonathan were absent from J City.
