Chapter 122

George's face was pretty much unreadable. “Why are you so curious? We're not even in the scircle, so why

bother?"

Brian gave a nonchalant shrug. "Fair point."

Joshua kept his mouth shut. While they played cards, he couldn't help but keep checking his phone, just in case

Allison sent him a message. After a few rounds, there was still no word from Allison, but his buddy Matthew had

texted him.

Matthew: [Heard you've got sissues in that department?]

Joshua's eyebrows knitted together and his lips pressed into a tight line.

Just as the gwrapped up, Brian stood up to stretch and caught a glimpse of the message on Joshua's phone.

He burst out laughing, the sound echoing across the room like a honking goose.

"Hahaha! Seriously, is it true? You've got issues?" Brian laughed so hard it looked like his sides might split.

Joshua shot him a cold, steely glare. Brian quickly swallowed his laughter, and his expression twisted into a

comical attempt to hold it in.

"What's the story here?"

Joshua got up. "I'm outta here.”

Brian, still grinning like a Cheshire cat, followed him, motioning for George to join in on the fun.

At the bar,

Allison took another swig of the drink the bartender had just mixed and began to sway as she belted out a song.

By the tJoshua walked in, she was hitting the high notes with gusto, albeit wildly out of tune.

Brian walked in and immediately clamped his hands over her ears. “Oh man, who's murdering that song?” Joshua

recognized Allison's voice but kept a straight face. As they got closer, it was clear that Allison was up on stage,

pouring her heart into the performance.

Brian nudged Joshua with his elbow. "Go get your girl down from there. This is pure noise pollution! Most people

get paid to sing; she should be paying us to listen!"

Joshua stood his ground. "Let her sing her heart out."

Brian was dumbfounded. “Alright, spoil her then." Brian took his hands off his ears, found a high stool, and sat

down.

Joshua settled in beside him, eyes glued to the stage, a soft smile playing on his lips.

George watched Allison with a grin, then turned to Joshua with a teasing note in his voice. "Allison's got quite the

set of pipes."

Brian chuckled. "You know, after a bit, it kind of grows on you."

Allison was totally sloshed and her mind was all over the place. She fumbled the lyrics and was constantly off-

key.

Joshua listened to the whole performance before heading up to the stage. He gently took her wrist. The warmth

of his touch brought her back to reality for a moment, and she turned to him with dreamy eyes. "Wow, you're

really good-looking. | just know you're meant to be my husband."

Her calling him “husband” made Joshua's heart skip a beat. He felt like every cell in his body was buzzing in that

moment. His breath caught, and he stood there, momentarily at a loss.

Allison looked up at him. Her cheeks flushed and her dimples deepened as she flashed him a playful smile, so

sweet he couldn't tear his gaze away. They stayed locked in that gaze for a few seconds.

All of a sudden, Allison leaned forward without warning, resting her head against Joshua's chest. Her soft hair

brushed against him as she snuggled in like a kitten, murmuring, “Mmm, you even smell just like my husband."

Joshua's go-to was a crisp, woody cologne, like cedar basking in the winter sun, a scent so inviting that Allison

couldn't help but breathe it in deeply. “You smell so good, hubby..."
