Chapter 144

Joshua suddenly chuckled.

"Allie, looks like we are not wanted here. Let's hit the road," he said, springing up from his seat, the chair making

a loud scrape against the wooden floor.

Allison, caught off guard, felt Joshua gently take her hand. His voice was soft, "How about | treat you to dinner?"

The feeling of warmth spread through Allison's heart. Joshua was standing up to Emily just for her.

On one hand, she was really touched, but on the other, a bit worried. She didn't want Joshua to have a falling out

with his family because of her.

As Joshua made to leave, Emily's voice cut through the air, sharp and stern, "Joshua!"

"Grandma, enjoy your meal. We're skipping dinner here tonight," Joshua said, holding onto Allison's hand firmly.

"I won't allow Allie to be mistreated."

"Joshua..." Allison hesitated.

"Joshua, is that the way to speak to your grandmother?" Ben's voice rumbled deeply.

Joshua's face was all business. "Letlay it out straight: Allie is my everything, and | won't let her suffer even a

smidgen. If this dinner isn't a happy one, we're out. And if anyone here can't accept her..."

Joshua paused, "Well, then | might just stop coming around."

Then, Joshua led Allison away, ignoring the Fisher family's calls echoing behind them.

In the car, Allison sat in the passenger seat, her face showing all her worries. "Joshua, you went toe-to-toe with

your family because of me. What if..."

"It's alright, Allie," Joshua reassured her, squeezing her hand. "I'm here for you."

"Do you think your grandma will dislikeeven more now?"

"She was giving you a hard ton purpose. | had to make it clear where | stand, or she'd just keep it up next

time."

Allison lowered her eyes, her lashes fluttering gently. "Feels like your family doesn't like me."

"That's not true," Joshua comforted

her. "Don't overthink it. My parents think you're great, and Grandpa does too. As for Grandma, she's just got the

wrong idea. I'll have a chat with her"

Allison nodded, a bit absentmindedly.

Joshua gently pinched her cheek. "What are you in the mood for, Allie? Let's get something yummy."

After the earlier , Allison was feeling a bit down and wasn't really hungry. "Anything's fine." Joshua drove

her to a swanky members-only restaurant and ordered a spread of her favorite dishes.

Back at the Fisher family dinner, the atmosphere was thick and heavy after Joshua's departure.

Ben sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. "Mom, why are you giving Allison such a hard time? What did she

do to upset you?"

Rose kept silent, her lips pressed together. She remembered Emily giving her a rough twhen she first joined

the Fisher family.

Emily had been tough on her daughter-in-law, and now she was doing the sto her granddaughter-in-law.

Was it really so hard to just get along?

Rose couldn't get her head around it.

Allison had everything going for her-great background, perfect match for Joshua, beautiful, kind, well-mannered.

So why wasn't Emily happy? Why did she have to nitpick even her clothes?

Emily let out a cold laugh. "Did you see how Joshua spoke tojust now? He's never talked back in all these

years. Today he did, alb

because of that Allison."

Rose laughed to herself. 'Oh, please. It was obvious who was stirring the pot. My son was just being a good

husband, standing up for his wife."

Ben said, "Mom, don't hold a grudge against Allison. She's not like that. She's a good person, so please, ease up

on her."

"Me, making things difficult? You don't know what she did to Lillian the other day!"
