Chapter 212

Allison's eyes darkened, "He wouldn't be dumb enough to drag himself into this mess."

Joshua turned to Javier, who lay frail and pale on the hospital bed. "Javier, I'm sorry you got caught up in this. It

all started because of me," he said, his voice heavy with remorse.

Javier looked weak and sickly, "Joshua, Allison filledin. Can't your influential family do anything about Chris?

Are we just going to let him continue hurting people?"

"Sorry, Javier. Right now, it's just a hunch that Chris is behind this, but without solid proof, the police can't step

in."

"Joshua, sometimes you've got to bend the rules a bit. If they're playing dirty, you've got to be even smarter.

You're not a cop, so why are you worrying about evidence?"

Joshua lowered his eyes, understanding the point all too well. He wasn't waiting on evidence to confront Chris;

it's just that Chris had recently returned to the country and was keeping a low profile, constantly moving around.

Every tJoshua thought he had Chris's location, the guy managed to slip away.

Joshua patiently explained the situation to Javier, who sighed in frustration and quietly sipped his medicine.

After briefing the Owens family on what happened, Joshua handed Javier a bank card, "This is just a small token

from me. Please take it."

Javier wasn't impressed. Money wasn't the issue here. His eyes fixed on the card, he said, "Forget the money,

catching Chris would be better than anything."

Standing in front of his father-in-law, Joshua kept his cool for Allison's sake, his behavior impeccable. He nodded

slightly, "Of course."

Before leaving, Allison closed her laptop and said calmly, "Joshua, I'm coming with you."

Javier's gaze turned cold, his expression darkening. Allison sighed, "Dad, they're targeting you to get to me. Only

when | show up will you, Linda, and Lizzy be safe."

Linda, startled, said, "Allie, we've got bodyguards now. We should be okay, but you've got to watch out!"

Javier snorted, "If marrying Joshua brings us danger, then maybe this marriage isn't worth it."

Allison froze, her heart sinking, feeling a chill spread through her as if she'd been plunged into an icy abyss. She

knew Javier meant business.

The hardest part was that she couldn't argue with him. Her sister and father were the ones hurt, not her. She

couldn't selfishly put her love and happiness above her family's safety.

"Dad," Allison's voice was strained, "I'll talk to Joshua."

Javier said sternly, "You two should have a serious talk."

In the hospital's underground parking garage, the car was warm and cozy, Joshua shrugged off his coat,

revealing a black shirt and tie, looking every inch the business professional, like he'd just dashed over from the

Fisher Corporation.

"Joshua," Allison said, "we need to talk."

Joshua's eyes were downcast, masking his emotions, "What do you want to talk about?"

Allison's heart ached. She couldn't

bring herself to say what needed to be said? But her family had been hurt

over and over. She couldn't be

selfish and think only of her love and happiness.

Yesterday Lizzy was kidnapped, and today her father was injured. What about

tomorrow? Would it be Linda, or herself?
