Chapter 215

In the cozy first-floor living room, the TV was buzzing with breaking news.

"This afternoon, a serious traffic accident occurred in River County. Let's go live to our reporter on the scene for

more details."

"Good afternoon, everyone. It's 4:15 PM, and I'm here on the state highway in River County. At 3:40 PM, a citizen

reported a severe accident on this road. As you can see, a car crashed into the right-side guardrail, and the

vehicle is badly damaged. The driver is critically injured and has been rushed to the hospital.

"Further down the road, the left guardrail is also damaged. It looks like a car went through the barrier and fell off

the cliff. Rescue teams are on it..."

Ray was glued to the screen, his brows furrowed in concentration.

"Grandpa, what brings you back?" Joshua asked, strolling in and tossing his car keys onto the table like it was

any other day.

Ray's gaze sharpened. "This accident isn't straightforward, is it? Was Chris involved?"

Joshua, looking a bit worn out, rubbed his temples and plopped down on the couch. "Yeah."

Ray pressed on, "I heard Javier had a fall?"

Joshua nodded, a calm "Yes" escaping his lips.

Ray's brow stayed knitted as he watched the news, deep in thought, the room tinged with an odd tension.

A servant brought in steaming cups of coffee, and Joshua took a small sip.

"Joshua, you need to break things off with Allison."

Joshua set his cup down softly, a shadow flickering in his dark eyes. He stayed silent.

Ray sighed, his voice heavy with seriousness. "Your fight with Chris shouldn't drag the Owens family into it. If

Chris can't get to you, he'll go after Allison."

"Sure," Joshua replied, almost absentmindedly.

Ray continued, "You and Allison only have a verbal agreement. It's not a formal engagement. It's easier to part

ways now. A clean break, scompensation, and a personal apology to the Owens family should smooth things

over. They'll understand."

Not so hard to let go?

Joshua chuckled suddenly, but it was humorless. His voice was soft, almost fragile. "How could | possibly let go?"

Ray paused, surprised, then looked at Joshua intently. "Are you really in love with Allie?"

Ray didn't know Joshua's feelings for Allison; he thought it was just a standard business and political match.

Joshua felt a weight in his chest, his eyes downcast, wordless.

Ray saw through him, sighing deeply, "You're a romantic, not like your father. You remindof myself back in

the day."

Switching gears, he continued, "But...

even if you can't let go, you must. You know Chris. He's built his

empire with one of the most powerful gang. He's armed and dangerous. If Allison stays with you, toput it bluntly,

she might end up losing her life. You don't want that, do you?"

"Javier was lucky this time; he

survived. But if he hadn't, do you

think Allison could forgive you or our family? That car accident was Chris' message to you. Joshua, if you love

her, you need to protect her and not let her be in harm's way because of you."

Joshua's eyes reddened, bitterness filling his heart. He opened his mouth to argue, but the memory of the

afternoon's terrifying moment flashed in his mind. A bullet had grazed Allison's head, nearly taking her life right

before his eyes. The words tangled in his throat, refusing to cout.
