Even when Joshua and Allison's engagement party rolled around, she was tied up at a major film festival

overseas and couldn't make it. This time, Joshua,

determined to get Allison to move on, roped in his distant cousin to play along in a little charade.

When Megan first heard her cousin needed her for a gig, she thought he was bankrolling sblockbuster

movie. Grinning from ear to ear, she said, "Wow, if you're backing it, it's gotta be a hit. Trust me. I'm an award-

winning actress, so you've cto the right gal. Within your film, it's bound to blow up!"

Joshua's expression was as cool as a cucumber, his tone flat, "It's not a film-it's a bit of acting."

Megan's smile wavered, "Say what now?"

"You'll be playing my pretend girlfriend."

"Got a clingy woman on your hands? Needto play the escape card?" Megan smelled gossip, her eyes

gleaming, "That doesn't add up. You're the top dog in Oak Lake. What girl would cling to you? Besides, don't you

already have a fiancée?"

Joshua's face clouded over, "She's not clingy. She's the only girl | love."

Megan was taken aback, speechless for a moment.

In a rare moment of patience, Joshua laid out the whole deal for Megan.

After hearing him out, Megan sighed, "Oh man, your fiancée's really getting the short end of the stick here. Can |

say no? | haven't even met her, and now | have to play the other woman in her love life. How am | supposed to

face her later?"

"Here's your payment," Joshua said, handing her a card.

Megan huffed, turning away, "Don't think you can throw money atto hurt a fellow woman!"

"Five million."

"Then again..." Megan grinned, snatching the card, "We're doing this to shield her. Once we clear things up, she'll

definitely see our good intentions!"

Inwardly, Megan thought: Don't hold it against me, Allison. The offer was just too sweet.

Joining a TV series for months barely brought in five million, and taxes were a killer. Just showing up with Joshua

and snapping a few pics could earn her months' wages. Where else would she find such a golden opportunity?

Joshua's gaze was steady, "Make it believable. Don't let her see through it." Megan patted her chest confidently,

"Relax, I'm an award-winning actress!"

After hanging up, Allison sat by the

window, tears streaming down bet face. A few minutes later, Joshe???

called back.

Allison thought he was going to explain, and hope surged inside her as she eagerly answered.

Joshua tried to sound calm, "Meg mentioned you called earlier, looking for me." Meg.

Such a cozy nickname. Just like when he used to call her Allie.

The hope that had just flickered in Allison's heart was snuffed out by those two words.

Trying to hold back her sobs, Allison asked, "You and her..."
