Evander leaned against the chair and met Old Mr. Chandler’s gaze. He was not in a hurry as he said, “No.”
“Then you should be clear by now. I’m sure you understand the situation of the Chandler family. Although we can’t
compete with the Golding family, we’re not that far off.”
Old Mr. Chandler frowned, and his voice turned deep and cold. “Angeline is my granddaughter. Although I’ve
neglected on disciplining her all these years which resulted in her doing such a reckless thing, the Chandler family
will not allow her to become someone’s mistress. Hence, I hope you’ll leave her. If you think the existence of her
daughter is bothering you, I’ll take up the responsibility of raising her.”
Evander was silent as he listened to what Old Mr. Chandler had to say. He then frowned and replied, “I think you
must be mistaken. Angeline is not my mistress, and Floretta is not her daughter.”
A hint of surprise appeared on Old Mr. Chandler’s face, but his gaze was still cold and sharp.
“You want my granddaughter to become your child’s stepmother? Are you looking down on the Chandler family?”
Following his questions, the atmosphere in the cafe became tense.
The waiter brought the coffee and a jug of water at that moment. Evander was quick to read the room and poured
the water into a glass for Old Mr. Chandler.
“If that day comes, I’ll make my relationship with Angeline publicly known and make her my wife.”
“Why should I believe you?”
Old Mr. Chandler huffed. He narrowed his eyes, and a sly glint flashed past them.
“There are many grudges among the prestigious families. I know my granddaughter well. Her personality is not
suitable for a prestigious family. Even if the two of you get married, there is a possibility that you’ll get divorced.”
Upon hearing that, Evander’s grip on his cup tightened. He, indeed, had not considered the problem Old Mr.
Chandler mentioned.
However, from the moment he chose Angeline, his decision was firm. Since he had decided to be with her, he
would never let go.

she’ll live without worry.”
Old Mr. Chandler was shocked to hear what Evander said. His words sounded like a casual remark. However, with
his reputation in the business world, it would be impossible for him to make an empty promise.
Old Mr. Chandler took a sip of water before sighing as though he had given in.
“Not only do they look alike, but her personality is similar to my daughter’s. Once they’ve set their heart on
something, they must see it to the end.”
He paused for a moment before he continued, “Back then, I threw a tantrum and refused to stay in contact with
my daughter. That caused her to be framed, resulting in a car accident. I didn’t even get to see her for the last
time!”
As Old Mr. Chandler said that, his emotions became unstable, and he shifted his gaze away. His eyes were filled with
sadness, and it looked like he had aged another ten years instantly.
“I’ve failed Cynthia. That is why I don’t dare to face Angeline for all these years. However, I want to make her
stronger, so she won’t have a life as short as her mother’s.”
“You shouldn’t have done that. For a child, nothing is more important than family.”
Evander’s tone was laced with a hint of grievance. He stared at the regretful look on Old Mr. Chandler’s face and
could not understand why the latter was so harsh on Angeline.
It could have been because he lost his parents when he was younger, but at least he had his grandfather to care
for him. On the other hand, Angeline had to defend herself against the various schemes of the Sorelle family all
alone.
He remembered when they first met. He had mistaken her for purposely getting close to him to steal the shares of
Sorelle Group. Now that he thought about it, he felt his heart ache for her.
In the end, Old Mr. Chandler did not reply to him. The two of them left the cafe and saw Angeline holding onto
Floretta’s hand as they walked out of the graveyard and waited in front of the car.
Angeline stared at Old Mr. Chandler warily before turning to look at Evander. The two had peaceful expressions as
though no argument had happened.
“I’ll leave first.”
Old Mr. Chandler’s voice was not as cold as before, but he kept his sentences brief. “If you’re free, come and visit
the family. Your mother left something for you with me.”
After saying that, he stared at Angeline. His assistant opened the car door, and he got in.
Angeline was shocked as she stayed rooted to the ground. She could not believe that Old Mr. Chandler would say
such a thing to her.
What in the world did they talk about in the cafe?
Seeing that Old Mr. Chandler’s had started up and they were ready to leave, Angeline hurried over and said, “Be
careful on your way back.”
That was the first time she talked to Old Mr. Chandler without arguing with him. He looked at Angeline’s face
outside the window and suddenly thought of something.
He saw a younger version of Cynthia in her. He could see the younger Cynthia sitting on the rocking chair and
singing the song she had learned at school for him.
At that time, the two of them were inseparable.
As he thought of that, tears brimmed his eyes. He held up a wrinkled hand to wipe them away. Outsiders could
never understand the love that he had for his daughter.
Unfortunately, there was no cure for regret.
He now understood that reputation and a person’s roots were not so important.
People could only clearly see the most important thing when they were on their deathbeds.
“Cynthia, I’ll take good care of your daughter.” Old Mr. Chandler shifted his gaze and let out a heavy sigh.

Floretta.
The silence in the car made Angeline think of many things. She looked at Evander, who was driving, and could not
help but ask, “What did you say to my grandfather?”
Evander skillfully turned the steering wheel. He teased, “To let me marry you.”
Angeline was rendered speechless.
Her eyes went wide as she was dumbfounded by what he had just said.
On the other hand, Floretta got what she wished for. She clapped her hands excitedly and cheered happily, “Wow,
that’s amazing! Daddy, did you already prepare a diamond ring? Can I call Angel my mommy now?”
Evander did not say a word. He looked at Angeline from the rearview mirror and noticed her cheeks were tinted
red. The corners of his lips curled into a teasing smile.
“Don’t speak nonsense, Floretta.”
Angeline hurriedly covered Floretta’s mouth. She was afraid the young girl would call her “Mommy” next.
Floretta’s eyes squinted because of how big her smile was. It made her look extremely cute.
She looked like she was looking forward to the day that she could call Angeline “Mommy.”
Evander brought them to eat Jetroinian food. After that, he did not send Angeline immediately. Instead, he took a
different road.
“Where are you taking me?” Angeline asked as she looked at her surroundings.
“We’re going to the mall. I booked three movie tickets,” Evander said briefly.
Upon hearing that, Angeline frowned. She unenthusiastically replied, “Mr. Golding, I don’t want to go elsewhere
today. Please pull over.”
Evander seemed to have guessed that Angeline would say that. His gaze turned serious as he consoled her, “If I
drop you off, you’ll start overthinking. Life needs to continue. You need to learn to come out of the past, and the
best way to do that is to divert your attention elsewhere.”
Angeline was speechless.
His words made it difficult for her to come up with a response.
