On a bright and sunny Thursday, Eliza took Mikey to Oak Falls to visit Robin.
"Just wait here for a bit, Dad. The nurse is bringing Robin out," Eliza said, adjusting Mikey's scarf. Mikey looked up with his dull eyes and mumbled something that Eliza couldn't quite catch.
"What did you say?" Eliza asked, straining to hear.
"I want... real, real," Mikey struggled to repeat.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtMikey had been mumbling about Lynn for days now. Eliza knew that the person Mikey really wanted to see wasn't Robin, but Lynn from Crescent Creek and her son. Unfortunately, after Lynn left him back at Falconridge, she never cto visit him again.
Whenever Mikey started mumbling about Lynn, Eliza would sometimes pretend she didn't hear him until he tired himself out. But today, it was testing her patience.
"Lynn doesn't care about you anymore. Why do you keep thinking about her?" Eliza snapped.
"Son, son," Mikey gestured desperately. "Eliza, son... real, real." Eliza knew that the son Mikey was talking about wasn't Robin. She didn't want to respond, but it felt like swallowing a bitter pill. "Alright, let's not talk about them anymore." "Must, must, real, real," Mikey insisted.
"Enough!" Eliza's patience finally broke, and her face twisted in anger. "Stop mentioning that woman. If she loved you, why would she leave you in Falconridge without a second thought? Dad, haven't you done enough foolish things? You hurt Mom, me, and Robin. Have you ever thought about that?" Mikey's expression changed. Whether it was because of Eliza's anger or his own guilt, he burst into tears. "Eliza, regret, undutiful, undutiful." Eliza was at her wits' end. She spent every day caring for him-feeding him, helping him drink, assisting him with the restroom and bathing. And yet, he accused her of being undutiful.
"Yes, I'm the undutiful one. Your precious Lynn treated you the best, right? Now, stop crying." She pulled out a tissue to wipe his tears and runny nose.
Just then, the nurse wheeled Robin out. He was still in his wheelchair, his eyes still lacking the light they once had, but his complexion had improved a lot. He seemed to be well taken care of.
"Robin," she called softly, not daring to get too close.
She expected the slack of response as before, but to her surprise, Robin looked up at her. Eliza was momentarily stunned, but quickly stepped forward and grasped his hand. "Robin, do you remember your sister?" Robin blinked and then nodded. Tears welled up in Eliza's eyes.
The nurse, worried Eliza might startle Robin, quickly explained, "Robin has been recovering well lately, thanks to Mr. Casper's medication from abroad. It's amazing how effective that medicine has been." "Mr. Casper?" Eliza asked, unsure.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Yes, Ms. Eliza," the nurse continued eagerly. "When Mr. Casper brought Robin here years ago, he went to great lengths to provide a better environment. He even raised alot of fireflies specifically for Robin. Those fireflies were specially bred and quite expensive." "Really?" Eliza was taken aback. So, the fireflies that filled the hills were his doing.
