Chapter 181
Ada arrived in Elmsworth on schedule, causing quite a stir in the local and international scene.
On the day of the banquet, Glynnis had her eye on a fancy purple haute couture dress early on. She
took great care with her hair, looking as stunning as always.

“Mom, didn’t you have a better–quality jade piece? Why aren’t you wearing that one?” Glynnis asked
curiously.
“Don’t even get me started. It breaks my heart!”
Elspeth clenched her teeth and the jade, That’s all because of paying off Acacia’s debt. What on earth
did the Stirling family do to owe so much money? I don’t have that kind of cash, and with the tightened
regulations, Moonlit Treasures hasn’t seen a customer in two months. That’s why I had to sell the jade
to pay off the debt!”
“Holy moly! You’re really determined. If it were me, I’d be bawling my eyes out. That was a birthday
present from Dad!”
Glynnis felt bad for her mom, but couldn’t help but ask, “But I really don’t understand why you’re
helping the Stirling family like this? Wouldn’t it be better to just let such disgraceful relatives fend for
themselves?”
“Hmph! If only.” Elspeth grumbled darkly.
When she first groomed Acacia to get close to and seduce Thaddeus, she was certain Acacia would
succeed. She never expected to make a misstep and lose everything!
Now, instead of controlling Thaddeus, she was being bitten by the pawn she herself raised!
Acacia had realized the convenience of reaping benefits from Elspeth, and had called to ask for money
the day before yesterday. Elspeth was infuriated to the point of wanting to kill her.
But killing her was out of the question. Unless she was driven to the wall, she wouldn’t stoop to such

That’s why she thought of putting Acacia to use again, promising that she would find a way to bring her
back to Elmsworth soon. That finally pacified the little
witch.
“Mom, how do I look in this?”
Glynnis twirled around happily. Ever since she saw Jareth in a purple shirt the other day, she picked out
a purple evening gown for tonight, as though they were wearing matching outfits. “Tonight, I’m going to
steal the show. I can’t let the Abernathys down!”
“The star of the evening is Ada. She’s a world–famous star. How much of a show–stealer can you be?”
Elspeth chuckled and pushed Glynnis’s deep V–neckline even lower, almost to her belly button. “You
don’t get many chances to be with Jareth. You should focus more on him, not compete with those
mediocre people. What good is dressing pretty if you can’t even get a foot in the door of the Fairhaven
family?”
Acacia was useless. Marilla was always a loser in Elspeth’s eyes, it was a miracle she hadn’t
embarra**ed Elspeth yet.
So now, she pinned all her hopes on Glynnis, hoping she could marry a wealthy man. After all, only if
her daughter married well could she gain power in the Abernathy family and control the power more
effectively!
“Mom, don’t worry. I’m sure I’ll be the future daughter–in–law of the Fairhaven family!” Glynnis declared
confidently, her chest puffed out.
“Oh? Do you have a plan?” Elspeth arched an eyebrow in question.
“Mom, Jareth’s sister Edith is back from abroad. She said she can help me! You have no idea how
much Jareth dotes on his sister. With her help, how could I possibly fail?” Glynnis got more and more
excited as she spoke, as if she could already see herself as part of the Fairhaven family.
“Edith?” Elspeth furrowed her brow, recalling the porcelain–doll–like little girl that Jareth often brought
to visit the Abernathys when they were children. That little girl was so clingy. She could barely tear
herself away from Thaddeus.
“Hey, there’s no such thing as a free lunch in this world. Aren’t you afraid of being used?” Elspeth
lounged on the sofa, lightly tapping her red nails. “Edith wouldn’t just help you out for no reason. She
must have struck some kind of deal with you, right?”
“Mom! No wonder Dad loves you so much, you’re so smart!”
Glynnis dragged her heavy skirt over and sat next to her mother, “Edith has a crush on Thaddeus. Her
condition is that she gets to marry Thaddeus.”
“What? That’s not possible!” Elspeth’s voice turned shrill, “Edith is the darling daughter of the Fairhaven
family. Her brother has a good relationship with that bastard. If Edith marries him, that bastard will grow
stronger in the Abernathy family, and I won’t have a place in the Abernathy family anymore!”
“But Mom, I’ll be allied with the Fairhaven family too! I can help you then!” Glynnis blanched at her
mom’s overreaction.
Elspeth’s deep red lips were pursed tightly, her eyes dark and silent for a moment before she suddenly
asked, “How far along is Edith with Thaddeus?”
“There’s no progress yet. From what Edith told me, Thaddeus seems to be hung up on Evadne. She
doesn’t stand a chance.” Glynnis pouted, looking miffed. “Hmph, all the better then
Mom, what do you mean?”
“You’re really thick. This is a golden opportunity to stir up trouble between Thaddeus and Jareth!”
Elspeth jabbed Glynnts’s forehead harshly, her eyes filled with disdain. “Jareth’s an only child. Right
now it’s Barry who’s running the Fairhaven family business, but Jareth has a bunch of shares his dad
left him. the Fairhaven group will be his in the future! Using Edith to drive a wedge between Jareth and
Thaddeus is way more valuable than getting some chick married into the Abernathy family! I know
Thaddeus well. He won’t take something he doesn’t want, even if you shove it down his throat. So,
whether or not Edith marries him, it’ll still be a thorn in the brothers‘ side. Their relationship will never
be the same!”
Glynnis’s face lit up with understanding and she looked at Elspeth with admiration.
Just then, a light knock sounded from the door.
“Come in!” Elspeth said, hiding her dark expression and looking composed.
The door creaked open a bit and Marilla, hugging a teddy bear, shyly squeezed into the room.
Seeing her sister reminded Glynnis of their deep–seated grudge. She wished she could tear Marilla

“Marilla? What are you doing here?” Elspeth asked indifferently.
“Mom.” Marilla hugged her teddy bear tighter, her head bowed low as she asked in a soft voice, “Can I
join the dinner party tonight?”
Both Elspeth and Glynnis were taken aback. Marilla, who was practically invisible, had never taken the
initiative to ask for anything. This was a first.
“Oh my, my dear sister, your pure image is finally about to crumble.” Glynnis lifted her leg and snidely
remarked, “Heard Jareth’s going too and couldn’t resist wanting to see your dreamboat, huh? Wanting
to throw yourself at him again after that sweet encounter you had with him last time? You’re really
something.” “I didn’t!” Marilla had long forgotten about Jareth, including that absurd yet pa**ionate kiss
in the bushes.
“Marilla, you can’t always count on good luck. And don’t you know you’re crazy? Aren’t you afraid you’ll
scare Jareth with your loony behavior?” Glynnis rolled her eyes in disgust.
Marilla’s face turned pale instantly, her teddy bear slightly distorted in her grip.
“Marilla, you’re not suited for tonight’s event. Stay home like a good girl. And,” Elspeth’s eyes
darkened, “no matter what happened between you and Jareth before, I won’t pursue it. But from now
on, stop causing trouble for your sister, or you won’t get away with it, got it?”
“Mom! I just want to meet Ada. I really like her movies!” Marilla’s voice was desperate, tears welling up
in her eyes.
“Hmph, who would believe such a lame excuse? Mom, don’t listen to her lies. She may look innocent,
but she’s actually really manipulative. She’s just after Jareth!” Glynnis said through gritted teeth.
“Marilla, stop interfering with your sister. You’ve already annoyed me enough. Don’t cause any more
trouble.” Elspeth’s tone was commanding, as if this girl had no
relation to her at all.
Marilla stood there blankly, her head drooped, letting out a whimper of grievance.
The neglect from her mother and the hatred from her sister made it impossible for her to preserve her
dignity in this home.
She was the sick daughter.
She was the disgrace of the family.
She was the unnecessary and unwanted one.
