Chapter 243
“Miss Evadne, are you really planning to go easy on that Ms. Edith? This has got to be the softest I’ve
ever seen you.”
Jason saw Evadne kicking off her high heels haphazardly, revealing a helpless yet doting smile. He
neatly arranged them under the table for her.
At the moment, Evadne was furiously playing a video game to relax, wreaking havoc in the virtual
world.
In this game world, the female slaughter queen Cifer had become a goddess adored by players. Every
time she live–streamed her gaming, hundreds of thousands of people would watch, the popularity was
enormous.
“What are you thinking, going easy? I’m a charitable businesswoman, not a saint brimming with
sympathy. I haven’t dealt with Edith only because I currently have no concrete evidence. She made
Glynnis her scapegoat, all the suspicions are indirect, and I can’t do anything to her.”
“It seems like there’s a deep grudge between you and Ms. Edith.
Jason grumbled, “She didn’t show any remorse at all, and even glared at you when she left. That look
was simply devouring!”
“She’d better be capable of devouring me, or else I suggest she blink. Otherwise, she might end up
being the joke herself when her scheme backfires.”
Her phone vibrated at this moment, with a call from Cassius.
“Cassius!” Evadne quickly picked up, her voice sweet and sticky.
“Evadne, are you at the hotel?” Cassius asked.
“Yes, in the office.”
“So, are you with Jason?” Cassius lowered his voice.
Evadne, astute as she was, immediately caught on and got up to walk towards the door, pretending to
go to the restroom.
If she asked Jason to leave at this time, it would surely make the perceptive Jareth suspicious that she
was deliberately avoiding him.
After reaching the private restroom, Evadne closed the door.
“Cassius, what’s the matter? Is it about Jason?”
“It doesn’t have much to do with Jason but there are some connections. He’s with you, so there are
some things I can’t say openly.”
Cassius paused, his tone steady, “Mr. Frederic, in order to get his daughter out, once again sought the
help of Jason’s lawyer brother, Cedric Dempsey. Cedric has already gone to the police station to get
Miss Abernathy.”
Evadne’s pupils darkened, “With Jim guarding her, the probability of Glynnis getting out is quite high.”
“Cedric is wily and experienced, with an undefeated record in his decade–long legal career, and he
won’t allow himself to fail. So even if he has to resort to unscrupulous means, he will clear Miss
Abernathy’s name.”
Cassius gently reminded, “Evadne, if I were Cedric, I would start with that Ms. Caroline. After all, she is
currently the primary witness accusing Glynnis.”
“Cassius, I get what you’re saying. But Caroline is not in my hands right now. She’s controlled by
Thaddeus.”
Evadne took a deep breath, her expression calm, “I’ll handle–this matter. You and Thad shouldn’t get
involved. Especially Thad, he’s a civil servant and can’t do anything illegal for my sake. If he’s caught
by someone with malicious intentions, it won’t be good.”
After ending the call, she felt a heavier burden on her heart..
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAs for Glynnis, she had never taken her seriously. After all, Elspeth was the ant queen she wanted to
take down.
But she was worried that this matter would upset Jason again. That foolish young man had a strong
sense of responsibility and was too sensitive. Would he come crying to her again?
With a heavy mood, Evadne walked towards the office:
“Evadne.”
Hearing the deep call, she abruptly stopped in her tracks. Her heart tightened and she turned around in
shock.
Behind her, there was no one.
Evadne shook her head, rubbing her slightly aching temples, thinking she must be hallucinating due to
lack of sleep.
“Ah!”
Suddenly, a strong force grabbed her arm, pulling her into the darkness like a vortex.
The next second, she crashed into a calm chest, the man’s slightly hurried breath brushing her hair,
spreading warmth throughout her body.
The embrace was deep and heavy, making her feel both unfamiliar and familiar.
It belonged to Thaddeus.
Perhaps because she was wearing ultra–high heels, and he was afraid she would sprain her ankle, his
sturdy arms immediately tightened around her slender waist.
The grip was somewhat heavy, mixed with conflicting emotions. He both wanted to protect her and
feared she would run away like a scared rabbit.
“Thaddeus! How did you get in?” Evadne was shocked and angry, her cheeks flushed as she struggled.
*Jareth said your security is tight, and I knew it would take some effort to get up here.” Thaddeus’s
eyes narrowed slightly, his voice husky yet casual.
He was, after all, a top graduate from a military academy, so it was quite easy for him to evade a
hotel’s security.
However, after becoming a CEO, he had people looking after him in every aspect, so he didn’t have to
worry about anything, hence his skills became redundant.
Only when he wanted to see Evadne did he have to rack his brains and make a great effort.
Sneaky! You’re acting like a villain!”
Evadne clenched her teeth, so angry she raised her foot to stomp on his foot, but Thaddeus quickly
spun around, pinning her against the wall.
Their eyes met, their gaze hot and intense,
Thaddeus knew that it wasn’t easy to meet Evadne, and his greedy eyes uncontrollably traced her face
over and over again.
“What are you staring at? Haven’t you seen it before?” Evadne snapped, her ear tips turning red.
“You seem to have gained some weight.” Thaddeus stared at her without blinking.
Seeing that her usually thin face had a bit more flesh, he couldn’t help but curve his lips..
Gained weight.
Gained weight?
“Are you angry? Gaining a bit of weight isn’t bad. You were too thin before. Your waist was all bones
and it hurt my hands. You should eat more Thaddeus spoke seriously, making him seem like a
gentleman even when saying such things.
Evadne’s cheeks were as red as the rising sun, her eyes wide open, and she slapped him in the face!
Thaddeus‘ cheeks were blazing as he forcefully clutched her right wrist. The imprint of a slap was vivid
on his face, like a branding of shame. “Evadne, is this how you treat people who have helped you?” he
asked, his voice strained.
“I don’t expect gratitude from you, but do you always have to answer my presence with hostility?”
“Gratitude? For what? For manipulating Caroline into testifying against Glynnis?”
Evadne’s chest heaved with indignation, her eyes sparkling dangerously. Even her scornful laugh was
stunning. “Thaddeus, you have no shame. If anyone should be saying thanks, it’s you, not me. You
used Caroline to set a trap for Glynnis. Can you honestly say you had no intention of using my situation
to your advantage? Without my unwitting assistance, would your plan have even worked?”
“Evadne!”
Thaddeus was infuriated again, his chest tight with anger. His starry eyes flashed red. “I just wanted to
see you.”
“Well, I don’t want to see you at all!”
Evadne’s left hand was caught in his iron grip, and she couldn’t break free: Fighting him off was
impossible. She was no match for this ex–military man!. So, she reached into her jacket pocket with her
left hand, intending to grab her phone and call Jason. But Thaddeus anticipated her move and swiftly
captured her other hand.
Seeing she was completely restrained, Evadne could only scream for help, but her cry was abruptly cut
off by Thaddeus‘ lips descending on hers.
His warm breath enveloped Evadne’s trembling lips, the hand holding her wrist was slick with sweat,
and beads of perspiration trickled down his forehead.
The last time he had kissed her like this, he had been drunk.
This time, he didn’t have an excuse.
He thought, “Thaddeus, you’re divorced. This is wrong. But isn’t that what desire is? Knowing it’s
wrong, but unable to control the stirring in your heart.”
With that thought, Thaddeus‘ heart pounded wildly. His usually impeccable self–control was teetering
dangerously on the edge..
His gaze became even more erratic, his eyes tinged with red: Initially, he just wanted to silence her, but
now, his kiss was fierce, as if he wanted to consume her.
Evadne had been resisting, fighting back with all her might. But her body was being controlled by him,
her lips tangled with his, her breath stolen by him, gradually, she was losing strength, becoming pliant
under him.
Frustration. Anger.
A single tear rolled down her cheek..
She was just a woman who had loved this man for thirteen years, only to be left unrequited. What sin
had she committed to deserve such humiliation?
“Thaddeus! You’re a beast!”
A furious roar echoed through the corridor, Jason, his eyes blazing, sprinted forward and pulled
Thaddeus off Evadne, then aimed a punch at his face!
But he was too slow for Thaddeus, who effortlessly dodged the blow.
“Jason!”
Evadne’s hoarse voice called out to Jason, but he was oblivious to her plea.
His mind was filled with the sight of Evadne being forcefully kissed by Thaddeus, his eyes fixated on
the seductive red lipstick smeared on Thaddeus‘ thin lips.
“Thaddeus. I’m going to kill you!”
Thaddeus‘ eyes/narrowed slightly, a frown creasing his forehead.
Jason was a taekwondo black–belt holder, once famed for his swift kicks in Elmsworth. He spun
around, his leg shooting up towards Thaddeus‘ chest.
But even his best effort was too slow for Thaddeus.
In an instant, Thaddeus moved behind him, his hand gripping Jason’s shoulder, and with a swift
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmmotion, Jason was brought down.
“What kind of trick is this?”
He had thought such crafty moves only existed in martial arts s, not in real life!
But Evadne recognized it right away. It was a close–combat technique taught in military school. She
knew Elvis could do the same.
With enough speed and precision, anyone could easily suppress an opponent using this technique. But
without at least five years of special training, most people couldn’t pull it off.
“Enough! Thaddeus!”
Evadne held onto the still numb Jason. If not for her support, the towering man might have ended up on
his knees in front of Thaddeus!
“Miss Evadne. I’m fine” Jason gasped, trying to reassure her, but he was too weak to even stand!
“You can’t even stand, and you say you’re fine?”
Evadne was worried about Jason, her eyes reddened with anger as she stared at Thaddeus, who was
standing there, not even a hair out of place. “How dare you hurt my people in front of me? Thaddeus,
are you even human? Is your handsome facade just a cover for a heart of stone?”
A pang of guilt hit Thaddeus, his dark eyes reflecting a tinge of red. He felt a sense of defeat.
“He was the one who attacked me first. Didn’t you see? Besides, I didn’t really hurt him. Once the
pressure point releases by tonight, he’ll be fine.”
“Don’t bother explaining. The more you do, the more despicable you seem!”
The tears in Evadne’s eyes pierced Thaddeus‘ heart. He watched as she raised her hand, and with the
back of it, wiped her lips roughly, as if to erase any trace of him.
“Thaddeus, admit it. You regret the divorce, don’t you?”
Thaddeus‘ heart clenched at her words, and he shivered involuntarily.
Their eyes met, and her gaze was as sharp as a scalpel, dissecting him ruthlessly..
For a moment, he didn’t respond. He couldn’t even say a simple “No.”
All he had left was his pride.
“If you don’t answer, I’ll take it as a yes.”
Evadne’s voice trembled, but she laughed brilliantly. “But let me tell you, even if you do regret it, keep
your illicit feelings to yourself. Your feelings for me are the greatest insult to my dignity.”
“I’ve had enough, llana. A marriage without love is torture for me.”
“Acacia’s coming back; you need to step down from Mrs. Abernathy’s position.”
The day he threw the divorce agreement in front of Evadne, all those cruel words he said to her came
flooding back, biting at him like a raging beast, leaving him in
tatters.
Dazed, Thaddeus made his way to the underground parking garage.
He had no idea how he got there. His head was splitting, his limbs stiff, like a fatally wounded victim on
the brink of death.
When he saw Gordon, every ounce of strength drained from him.
“Mr. Abernathy!”
Seeing his ashen face, Gordon quickly came over to support him, anxiously asking, “Is your headache
acting up again? Get in the car, I’ll get your medicine.”
Headaches could be controlled with medicine.
But what could cure a heartache?
“Gordon, I don’t understand.”
Thaddeus clutched his head, panting heavily, asking, “I never cared about her when she was my wife. I
treated her so poorly, yet she stuck by me. Why now when I’m good to her, she is so cruel to me?”
Gordon was taken aback, his brows furrowed in concern as he looked at the man tormented by pain.
He felt a pang in his heart:
After a moment, he let out a long sigh, softly responding, “Mr. Abernathy, because Mrs. Abernathy used
to loved you very much.”
But now, she didn’t.
