Chapter 246
Thaddeus delivered his statement with a thunderous voice, then strode off, leaving the room with his
head held high.
Cedric remained motionless where he stood, his body flushed with a cold sting of embarrassment.
Born into a prominent family of lawyers, he was always held in high regard by his parents and adored
by his younger siblings. He was well respected among the legal fraternity of Elmswort
Even the wealthiest tycoons would make concessions just to have him handle their cases.
When had he ever experienced such humiliation?
Wait a minute.
Cedric scowled, turning to look at Thaddeus‘ retreating figure.
What was the nature of his relationship with Evadne? And why was Thaddeus, a man known for his
reserved nature, so enraged on her behalf?
He knew Evadne, the Ashbourne family’s precious gem. She was a woman of celestial beauty, set high
above the common folk. She had the world at her fingertips, yet she barely paid any mind to the
average man.
There was only one possibility. Thaddeus, the illegitimate child, was infatuated with the Ashbourne
family’s precious gem!
Even if he was handsome and cunning, so what?
His mother had never been given any social standing, and his prestigious position as CEO was simply
a handout from the Abernathy Group’s heir!
“Being in the palace doesn’t make you the king, Thaddeus. Just because you dress in royal robes
doesn’t mean you’re the emperor! Do you really think you, with your lowly birth, are fit to pursue the
Ashbourne family’s gem? Dream on!”
With a cold glance, Cedric walked into the mansion.
Seeing Thaddeus and Cedric entering one after the other, everyone was taken aback.
“Dad, Cedric is a talented attorney. Without him, Glynnis wouldn’t have walked free so easily. He did a
great job.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtFrederic enthusiastically introduced Cedric to his father, “So I’m planning to hire him as the head of the
legal department for the Abernathy group. What do you think?”
“Mr. Frederic, it’s an honor to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.” Cedric greeted Hamilton with a
polite smile.
“Cedric, are you Dave’s eldest son?” Hamilton scrutinized him with a stern gaze.
“Yes, my father is indeed Dave Dempsey.”
Pride and joy were evident on Cedric’s face. “Does this mean you and my father are old
acquaintances?“.
Thaddeus watched their interaction from the side, his expression dark and brooding.
He held a strong distaste for Cedric, who reeked of hypocrisy. However, it seemed that his grandfather
might have some history with Cedric’s father.
“Of course, I know him,” Hamilton replied with an ambiguous smile. “Back in the day, your father was
the one who presided over Felix’s case. He was fair and impartial, sentencing him to four years.”
Everyone gasped in surprise!
Cedric’s face paled instantly, his forced smile faltering.
For a moment, Frederic’s face darkened as a painful memory resurfaced.
This subtle change in expression didn’t escape Thaddeus’s notice.
“Mr. Hamilton, my father may be highly competent, but he’s also rather rigid. I apologize for his
actions.back then.”
Cedric hadn’t expected the conversation to take such a turn. Seeing Hamilton’s stern demeanor, he
quickly bowed and apologized.
“Interesting,” Hamilton raised an eyebrow. “What did your father do wrong? Why are you apologizing
for him?”
Cedric was taken aback, his face stiffening.
“Isn’t being fair and impartial the basic professional ethic of a lawyer? By apologizing for him, are you
implying that he was wrong to have done so?”
“Mr. Hamilton, you’ve misunderstood. I didn’t mean that.” Cedric laughed awkwardly.
“You’re quite well–known yourself. You are famous for only representing the rich and famous. From
celebrities to tycoons, many have had dealings with you.”
Hamilton scoffed, if you hadn’t said you were Dave’s son, I wouldn’t have been able to associate the
two of you at all. Your approach is indeed vastly different from your father’s.”
Everyone could hear the sarcasm in his voice,
This was a clear questioning of Cedric’s integrity.
Thaddeus’s lips curled into a small smile, while Frederic and Elspeth didn’t seem too pleased.
“Mr. Hamilton!”
At this moment, Mr. Murray hurriedly walked in, “Ms. Evadne has arrived.”
Thaddeus’s heart jolted, his gaze instantly focusing on the entrance.
Everyone turned their heads, their complex gazes landing on the entrance.
The sharp sound of high heels seemed to pierce his heart.
Evadne, the woman who had once lived in this house for three years, walked in alone. The aloof and
noble aura surrounding her made it seem as if she was stepping into this place for the first time.
For a moment, Thaddeus’s vision blurred.
It felt as if they were still married.
“Grandpa, I’m here.”
Evadne smiled brightly, her eyes twinkling as she walked straight towards her grandfather, not sparing
Thaddeus a glance.
It was as if they didn’t know each other at all.
Thaddeus felt a pang in his chest, his heart dropping.
Every encounter with his ex–wife after their divorce was like a brutal torment, a devastating disaster.
“Evadne.”
Glynnis glared at Evadne, her gaze burning with hatred. If it weren’t for Elspeth holding her back, she
would have lunged at Evadne and torn her to pieces!
“Oh? Isn’t this Cedric? What a coincidence.”
As she walked past Cedric, Evadne suddenly stopped, smiling sweetly at him.
Cedric was taken aback!
Everyone else was equally shocked!
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmCedric? Could it be that they have a close relationship?
“Ms. Evadne, it’s been a while,” Cedric responded, forcing a smile and using a more formal address.
“Indeed, it has been five or six years since you last visited my father, hasn’t it? He was reminiscing
about you recently. Our families have known each other for a long time. I remember when I was a child,
Mr. Dempsey would often bring you and Jason over to our house for visits. In recent years, we’ve lost
touch.”
Evadne’s eyes fell on Frederic’s surprised face as she spoke, a smile playing on her lips. “Mr. Frederic,
were you aware that Mr. Dempsey and his three sons have always been esteemed guests of the
Ashbourne Group? After his retirement, Mr. Dempsey even served as the legal head of the K Group for
a while. But Mr. Dempsey is a modest man, so not many people knew about this.”
Cedric maintained his composure, though his cheeks were burning. Evadne’s words, delivered so
casually, struck at his very core.
What he least wanted to mention was the fact that his family had once been beneficiaries of the
Ashbourne’s generosity. He had to admit to himself that his current success was in large part due to the
Ashbourne’s patronage.
If he wanted to strengthen his position and change his circumstances, he needed to break free from the
Ashbourne’s shadow.
“I had no idea that Cedric and the Ashbourne family were so closely connected,” Frederic remarked,
his tone thoughtful.
“My father did indeed serve as the K Group’s legal advisor for a few years, but he resigned a long time
ago. I haven’t had any contact with the Ashbourne family for many years,” Cedric quickly interjected,
making it clear he wanted to distance himself from the Ashbourne Group.
“Cedric, no, Attorney Cedric,”
Evadne’s smile turned icy as she narrowed her eyes, “You mustn’t have forgotten that when Mr.
Dempsey retired, the Dempsey family faced a significant crisis. If it hadn’t been for my father’s help,
your family may not have survived. My father showed kindness to your father, and your family has
benefited greatly from ours. We never expected anything in return..But you shouldn’t be colluding with
outsiders to undermine me.”
Her lips curved into a cold, stunningly beautiful smirk, “Is this your code as a lawyer? To forget
kindness without gratitude?”
