Chapter 249
Whenever Evadne showed up, it was as if a tornado had swept through the Abernathy family, leaving
nothing but chaos and discord in its wake.
Evadne didn’t have the time or the inclination to explain herself to Hamilton, believing that the truth
would eventually come to light.
Besides, she had already had a taste of Cedric’s character from Emeric and Suri. If he could pull
strings to get Glynnis out of a sticky situation, it meant he had taken care of any potential threats, Even
if she knew that he had framed Kevin, the police had already closed the case and it was not likely to be
reopened.
Cedric’s smile could be as charming as a gentleman, but his actions were as treacherous as a snake in
the grass.
Hamilton, on the other hand, had no intention of making things difficult for her, After all, he trusted her.
He had seen her genuine, golden heart.
And if he couldn’t trust llana, who else could he trust in this world?
Evadne personally wheeled Hamilton back to his room, with Thaddeus following close on her heels like
a loyal hound.
She was annoyed and frustrated, but Hamilton seemed contented, his weathered face illuminated with
a gratifying smile. He looked rejuvenated, as if the love in the air was a magical elixir giving him a new
lease on life.
“Grandpa, I’m sorry I haven’t been able to visit you recently. I’ve been really busy. You must be angry
with me,” Evadne said, guilt etched on her face.
“Nonsense, dear. Just knowing you care about me is enough.” Hamilton squeezed her hand warmly
and glanced at Thaddeus. “You’re young. You should be out socializing, meeting impressive men like
Avery. I heard you’ve been acquainted with him. Have you taken a liking to any of them? If so, bring
them over. ll help you inspect them.”
Thaddeus’s chest tightened as if a sledgehammer had hit it. Hamilton, sitting in his wheelchair, seemed
to be enjoying playing matchmaker, even if it meant risking his precious llana’s heart.
“Grandpa, how do you know about Mr. Avery?” Evadne asked, surprised.

“Oh, even though I don’t go out much these days, I still keep up with the news, Hamilton boasted.

“I’ve known Mr. Avery since we were kids.”
“Are you childhood friends?” Hamilton asked, his interest piqued..

“Well, we are more like older sister and younger brother. He was a frail boy and I always had to look
after him,” Evadne said with a smile, striking a pose with her hand on her hip and her chin held high.
Thaddeus’s heart ached as he watched her, and a pang of pain shot through his head. He turned away,
pressing his temples to ease the throbbing.
Her laughter was just like that of a girl he vaguely remembered from his past. He was sure he had met
Evadne long ago, but he just couldn’t remember when or where.
“Is that so? How come I’ve never heard you mention your close relationship with the Chambers family
before?” Hamilton asked, more curious now.
“Mr. Avery moved to Helgen with his mother later and we lost touch. We bumped into each other
coincidentally not long ago and reconnected,” Evadne explained. “I see. I heard that at the charity
auction you organized, Mr. Avery donated an extremely valuable necklace to raise funds. He seems to
care about you a lot,” Hamilton probed further.
“Mr. Avery is probably just grateful for the help I gave him when we were kids. He wanted to thank me,”
Evadne responded with a nonchalant smile.
Hamilton turned to Thaddeus with a disdainful look. “Humph, he seems a lot better than this cold and
stiff lump of wood we have here!” He was not really praising Avery, but trying to provoke Thaddeus to
step up his game.
“Grandpa, please don’t hold any grudges against Mr. Thaddeus because of our divorce. I’ve told you
from the beginning, it was a mutual decision, and I hold no ill feelings toward him,” Evadne said, her
eyes as calm as a still lake.
Thaddeus felt a sharp pain in his heart. He knew he was at fault and he regretted it. He wished he
could go back and change everything.
Just as Evadne was about to leave, Thaddeus quickly followed her. “I’ll walk you out,” he said.
Evadne, who had been holding back her anger, finally lost it. She turned around and pointed at him,
yelling, “Stop!”
Thaddeus raised his eyebrows in surprise.
Evadne bit her lip, slightly embarrassed. She meant to say “don’t“, but it came out as “stop“.
“Whatever, it’s all the same to me!”
“I don’t need your help, Thaddeus. I’m a grown woman for God’s sake, I know my way home!”
“It’s late. I’m walking you home.” Thaddeus insisted, taking a step forward.
Evadne remembered his arms around her earlier that evening. She clenched her teeth and brushed an
imaginary speck of dust off her shoulder. “Thaddeus, I didn’t
lose my cool earlier not because I have any feelings for you, but because your grandfather was there.
Don’t push your luck.
I’m already, seething because of Cedric and Glynnis. Even a stray dog would get a slap from me right
now. Do you want the next one?”
Evadne thought her words were pretty badass and intimidating.
But Thaddeus just raised an eyebrow and held back a smile.
“If Cedric bothers you again, let me know. I’ll sort him out.” He said softly.
“Hah, no need! What happens between the Dempsey family and the Ashbourne family is none of your
business. You better mind your own!”
Eyadne remembered how Thaddeus had defended her in front of the whole Abernathy family, even
making Cedric lose face. A bitter feeling rose in her heart.
But she quickly realized that Thaddeus‘ actions were likely more about protecting his own interests.
After all, it was clear that Frederic wanted to bring Cedric into the Abernathy group. If Cedric became

With these thoughts, all Evadne could do was sneer.
Just as Thaddeus was about to approach her again, a stern voice came from behind.
“Thaddeus!”
Thaddeus turned around to see Frederic striding towards him.
“Join me in the study. We need to talk.”
“I’ll be with you later, Right now, I’m taking Miss Evadne home.” Thaddeus replied coolly, not backing
down.
“Take her home? Hah, does she really need your help? Miss Evadne left a while ago!”
Thaddeus was stunned. He turned back around, but Evadne was nowhere to be seen.
Evadne walked out of the Abernathy mansion with an expressionless face.
“Miss Evadne.”
She stopped in her tracks and fixed a cold gaze on Cedric, who was approaching with a sly smile.
“Whether you like it or not, Miss Evadne, I helped Glynnis through this ordeal. Losing to me isn’t that
bad.”
“Indeed, the more I think about it, the more I feel like I’ve actually won this time.”
Evadne wasn’t angry. Instead, she mocked him, “Thanks to Glynnis, I got to see the true face of the
Dempsey family’s eldest son. I’ve seen plenty of people who complain about the cook after they have
eaten. But you, breaking the bowl after eating, really are one of a kind, Cedric. I wonder, if Mr.
Dempsey knew that his most proud son’s greatest ambition was to wipe the billionaires‘ asses and to
stand against his benefactors. Would he feel ashamed for you, Cedric?”
Cedric’s fake smile froze on his face. His expression darkened. “Miss Evadne, I’ve been going easy on
you because you’re Chairman Emeric’s daughter. But you’ve been pushing me too far! Do you think
being a billionaire’s daughter entitles you to do whatever you want?”
“Oh, that’s right. I am a billionaire’s daughter. I can do whatever I want. With such a noble status, why
not use it?”
Evadne’s eyes narrowed dangerously, her red lips curled up into a scary smile, “So next time, before
you go against me, remember who I am and who’s behind me. I may not have a temper as bad as my
father, but it’s not far off either.”
Then Evadne walked away in her fashionable high heels, leaving Cedric staring at her retreating figure,
his teeth almost grinding in anger.
“Evadne, don’t mistake me for my useless brother Jason. He might be willing to be your family’s
lapdog, but I am not that weak! We’ll see who gets the last laugh in the end!”
