Chapter 629
Edith’s forehead was slick with a sheen of cold sweat, her fingers clenched tightly around
the bedsheets.
She had always thought Jareth was more brawn than brain. Whenever she pulled a stunt, a little act of
stubbornness, a sprinkle of charm, and she could gloss over any mistake.
But now, she realized how terribly wrong she was!
Jareth’s mind was sharp, piercing through her and Gary’s schemes with a single glance! The reason he
had been duped time and time again was not due to his lack of wit, but because of his unconditional
belief in her, his unwillingness to harbor suspicions.
Now, they were no longer siblings but adversaries.
Jareth stood as a formidable foe, a man who had outwitted Gary twice over.
Gary stood rooted to the spot, seething, but Jareth lacked the patience for idle chatter with the old mutt.
With the powerful stride of a man, he brushed past Gary, sending him stumbling comically, to stand
before Edith.
“Edith, I suggest you sit tight and keep as quiet as a church mouse,” Jareth’s eyes, sharp as a hawk’s,
narrowed, the threat in his voice causing a tingling sensation on Edith’s scalp. “If you dare to mess with
Evadne and Thad’s marriage, or so much as disturb my fiancée, not even the Almighty himself will be

Each word dripped with venom and spite.
Edith’s eyes locked with Jareth’s fierce and icy gaze, a tumult of shock, rage, and despair swirling
within her.
The last time Jareth called her Edith, there was adoration in his eyes, a warm smile on his lips as he
held her hand, his pride palpable as if he wanted the whole world to know
talented sister.
It felt like a lifetime ago.
Jareth was her brother, hers alone. How did the care and affection that were meant for
her end up being Marilla’s?
There was a pang of pain in Edith’s heart, but as she recalled how Jareth had hurt her time after time
for that woman, even considering her less than Evadne, who had been divorced and childless, all that
remained was raw, unadulterated hatred.
She thought, “Jareth, don’t blame me. This mess, this estrangement – it’s your doing, for not
distinguishing between kin and stranger, for reaping what you have sown!”
Mrs. Fairhaven watched with a heavy heart as her son threatened her daughter, the once harmonious
and happy farnily now riven by enmity. She was torn apart inside, at a loss

for words and actions.
As he prepared to leave, Jareth spoke up, his eyes shining with an earnest longing for marital bliss,
“Mom, once the engagement is official, Marilla and I will have our ceremony. According to Elmsworth’s
wedding traditions, as the future mother-in-law, you’re meant to pass down a family heirloom that you
received from your father to Marilla.”
Mrs. Fairhaven bit her lip, her eyes reflecting reluctance.
“I figured you might be reluctant or unwilling. It’s okay, I understand, which is why I’m just giving you a
heads-up.”
Jareth smiled nonchalantly, glancing at his associate, who promptly draped a black coat over his
shoulders with due respect, “If you really don’t want to part with the heirloom, I’ve got it covered, Dad
left several collectible jewels with me before he passed. I’ll pick the finest one for Marilla and say it’s
from you. For the sake of the Fairhaven family’s image, I trust you won’t object, right?”
His casual remarks left Mrs. Fairhaven choked with emotion.
After Jareth left the room, the air seemed to freeze,
“Mom. Can you believe how terrifying Jareth has become?” Edith whimpered, her tears returning as

family anymore?”
Mrs. Fairhaven, filled with helplessness, could only sigh, “Edith, let it be.. You know your brother’s
temperament. What good does it do to oppose him?”
“Mom, what are you saying?” Edith shook her mother’s arm vigorously, “Have you accepted Marilla
too? Watching your son marry a woman you disapprove of. Can you really swallow your pride?”
“And if I can’t, what then? Your brother is just like your father – once he’s set on someone or
something, nobody can change his mind.”
Mrs. Fairhaven’s eyes brimmed with tears as she clutched her daughter’s hand, “Edith, I’ve come to
terms with it. As long as you stay by my side, that’s all that matters to me. As for the rest, let your
brother handle it.”
Seeing her mother so defeated and resigned, Edith was furious but powerless!
After a while, Mrs. Fairhaven stood to retrieve Edith’s medical reports from the doctor
Once the door closed behind her, leaving just the two of them, Edith’s facade of innocence vanished,
replaced by a dark and brooding expression.
Gary, too, dropped his act, sprawling on the couch with a lazy, mocking gaze. “Edith, I’ve already done
my part to get you back here. Now, isn’t it time you delivered on what you promised me?”
