Chapter 295 During breakfast, Jonathan didn't talk to anyone as he was contemplating how to find Infant King's subordinates. Yet, he had little progress.
After having their meal, everyone left the diner.
Mabel said, “Jonathan, Ms. Lachman, I'm sure you're exhausted since you didn't get much rest. How about | arrange a hotel for you to stay in first?” “It's all right. We'll stay at your place. This way, we can take care of each other as well,” replied Jonathan.
Mabel was stunned for a short while before responding smilingly, “That's fine, too!” Then, she turned to Jeff and said, “Chief Yount, we'll be leaving now. Please contact us if there's any news.” Jeff nodded. “Don't worry, Mabel. I'll hurry and investigate this matter.” Jonathan pondered silently before speaking suddenly.
“Chief Yount, do you think we can start the investigation by searching for the source of Infant King? Who on earth is
he, and where is he usually active?” Jeff answered, “I've thought about these before. However, Infant King's history is still a mystery. | just recently found out there's such a being in the world. Besides, Infant King hadn't deliberately created baby ghosts before this. After all, there are already many cases of abortion. He just has to capture those babies and absorb the power. Since all this activity takes place in the underworld, we can't see it with our bare eyes or surveillance cameras. Hence, it's difficult to check where he's been.” Hearing that, Jonathan wasn't feeling discouraged at all.
“That's okay. I'll think of another way.” Subsequently, Jonathan and the others waved Jeff goodbye.
Mabel called someone to send a Land Rover over.
Forty minutes later, Jonathan and the rest arrived at Mabel's home.
Mabel's condition was normal now, and she arranged a room for Beatrix. The latter didn't wish to interact with
anyone further and went back to her room to cultivate in silence.
Jonathan and Mabel sat on the couch.
Although there were guests at Mabel's house, she was not the sort of gracious host who would make a show of buying ingredients to cook a meal for them. If they had to eat, they could simply eat outside.
Of course, these matters were trivial in times like this.
Jonathan only had his mind fixed on helping Mabel out.
“I'm sure we'll get the perfect chance,” Jonathan said.
“Danger brings opportunity. | believe you can absorb Infant King's primordial spirit this time and get a drastic increase in your cultivation level.” Mabel smiled faintly and replied, “Of course, | can do it with the Chosen One's help.” She was simply going along with him.
Although she cared about whether she lived or died, she wasn't afraid at all.
However, Jonathan couldn't bring himself to stand there helplessly and watch his friends die.
As for the situation right now, the most troublesome part was to find baby ghosts that already belonged to the underworld in this vast world. It was extremely challenging.
They could still search for a living human by paying attention to their features and other clues.
Yet, it was too difficult to search for something that they couldn't even see with their bare eyes.
“Mabel, | have an idea,” Jonathan said abruptly after pondering for a while. “We can find Chief Yount and brainstorm with him a way to let us see the baby ghosts or negative energy objects. It's something like activating our Third Eye like The Destino.” “Chief Yount should be able to do that,” Mabel replied.
“Then what?” “Our knowledge is limited within the overworld, no matter how powerful we are. Since we're dealing with the underworld, we should find someone who's an expert at it,”
explained Jonathan.
His suggestion piqued Mabel's interest. She asked, “Where can we find such a person?” Jonathan answered, “We should look for a hospital with plenty of negative energy and bad geomancy. Then, we can see if any women recently visited to carry out an abortion. If there are, we can activate our Third Eye and observe in secret to see if a baby ghost has been formed. If there is, we can track the baby ghost and see if we can find aclue.” Mabel couldn't help but smile bitterly. “Isn't this akin to looking for a needle in a haystack? Every day, there are more babies who get aborted than there are being born in Chanaea. There are also too many baby ghosts, but most would linger for a while before vanishing.
Infant King's subordinates must just be at a certain location. It's impossible that he can gather baby ghosts from so many locations accurately.” After a brief pause, she continued, “Besides, only Infant King has the habit of gathering baby ghosts, not his subordinates.”
Jonathan said in a deep voice, “Maybe we can still try our luck? It's way better than sitting here and doing nothing, anyway.” Seeing how determined he was, Mabel had no choice but to reply, “All right, then. I'll inform Chief Yount later and ask my people to find a hospital that suits your criteria.” Jonathan nodded in acknowledgment.
A thought occurred to him in the next second. “By the way, Master wants you to absorb Infant King's subordinates.
Does that mean you're absorbing their dark energy?” Mabel responded, “Actually, we cannot absorb dark energy.
What Master Richard meant was that those baby ghosts can transform dark spirits into the dark spirit energy that can be used as a supplement for my brain.” Hearing that, Jonathan asked, “If that's the case, then why must we find Infant King's subordinates? Why can't we just find ordinary baby ghosts for you to devour?” “Of course not!” Mabel exclaimed. “Infant King's
subordinates are already trained using Infant King's mana.
Hence, they're the only ones who possess dark spirit energy. Ordinary baby ghosts don't possess that, and they only have an endless resentment aura. It's harmful once someone absorbs it.” Jonathan had an epiphany.
Then, he got up and said, “Ask your subordinates to focus on investigating these types of hospitals. We have to give it a try, no matter what. There's always hope before everything comes to an end.” He had always aimed for victory and never admitted defeat easily.
Mabel nodded and grinned. “I will forget about the formalities this time.” A faint smile appeared on Jonathan's face as he replied, “We'll have a drink after you're cured.” He then added shortly after, “I'll return to my room first.” Mabel responded frantically, “What do you mean, your
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtroom? There are only two bedrooms, and Ms. Lachman is already staying in one of them. Are you going to my room, then?” Jonathan chuckled. “Why not? It's not like you've left your underwear all over the place.” With that, he directly went to her room, which left Mabel with no choice but to let him do so.
As soon as Jonathan entered Mabel's bedroom, he caught a whiff of her unique scent.
With Jonathan in his current mental state, he was in no mood to take advantage of Mabel and peek at her underwear or anything. Besides, his relationship with Mabel was more like a friendship between soulmates—it didn't involve feelings that lovers would have for each other.
Jonathan actually just wanted to get ready to consume some Immortal Pills. Currently, he possessed two Trio Vitality Pills, and he had to improve his cultivation level promptly.
Edward was too powerful, which made Jonathan feel overwhelmingly pressured.
Jonathan sat cross-legged on the bed and ate a Trio Vitality Pill.
Immediately, the Trio Vitality Pill transformed into a burst of vital energy when it was placed in his mouth.
The vital energy began surging through his body.
I have to admit that Divine Realm's alchemy skills are incredible. This is amazing. This Trio Vitality Pill will form a burst of vital energy and is rich in nutrients. | can't imagine how the senior alchemists do this.
A high-quality elixir pill had to be free of side effects.
Usually, any ordinary pills on the market had side effects, and the toxic impurities in those pills would harm the body.
However, an elixir pill wouldn't cause any harm.
A human's lifespan was limited because every action— whether it was eating or breathing—would introduce toxins and impurities into the body.
It was easy to eliminate those wastes when one was young and had a great body condition.
Yet, as one aged, one's immune system would drop. Thus, it would be difficult to eliminate the toxins from the body.
Then, one's health would deteriorate, forming a vicious cycle.
When an ordinary old person consumed an elixir pill, it would clear out the toxins in the body and replenish the nutrients. Therefore, it would form a healthy cycle.
Meanwhile, the vital energy was surging in Jonathan's body. Afterward, the vital energy dissipated into every corner of his body and was absorbed by the cells.
Phew! To Jonathan, it was like every single cell in his body was in a dehydrated state before consuming the pill. After that, it was as though a wave of rain had just poured after a long drought.
Jonathan knew the process of him going from the Nascent
Soul level to the Celestial Soul level was too rapid, so he didn't have a firm foundation to support the drastic change.
That was the reason his cells were so dehydrated.
If one wanted to enter the Divine Master level from the Celestial Soul level, it couldn't be done without elixir pills, as the nutrients needed by the body were too immense.
No matter how much one cultivated, one's body could never completely replenish the nutrients.
However, achieving the Divine Master level from Celestial Soul level wasn't as easy as taking Immortal Pills. One must refine their spirit into essence first, then refine their essence for it to return to the void, and so on.
These were all essential steps.
Moreover, it was a profound matter to cultivate further from the Divine Master level.
Cultivating into an immortal was difficult, and it wasn't something that could be achieved with pure luck.
After consuming a Trio Vitality Pill, Jonathan felt nothing
happening to his body. It was as if he was using a glass of water to extinguish a big fire.
Without hesitation, he took the final Trio Vitality Pill left.
Yet, he still felt almost nothing at all.
But he did feel much better and didn't feel as hungry as before.
At the same time, Jonathan understood he required many more elixir pills to achieve the Divine Master level.
He needed at least six Heaven Pills—that was if he wanted to achieve the Divine Master level as soon as possible.
If he was willing to undergo intense cultivation for a few years and consume two Heaven Pills, it would have the same effect as well.
However, Jonathan couldn't wait for another few years. He was worried that by that time, Edward would've already become an Immortal-level expert.
Now, Edward was a powerful master in Divine Realm, so he could get so much more elixir pills than
Jonathan.
“So what?” An icy glint appeared in Jonathan's eyes.
“Edward, someday, | will make you regret what you did that day.” No matter how tough the path Jonathan chose was, he wouldn't be afraid.
After consuming two Immortal Pills, he cultivated in silence for a while. It was already five in the evening when he opened his eyes once again.
Chapter 296 The warm and pleasant light from the setting sun shining through the window could make anyone forget about their troubles.
Then, Jonathan heard footsteps outside before Mabel knocked on the door.
“It's time to eat, Jonathan!” shouted Mabel.
‘When Jonathan got out of bed and opened the bedroom door, he saw delicious food, accompanied by a large bag of his favorite stout, on the table.
The dishes smelled so good that it would be almost impossible for anyone to not drool over them.
“Did you prepare these?” Jonathan asked Mabel excitedly.
In response, Mabel rolled her eyes at the man. “What do you think? | would've been married by now if | could cook. | got my subordinates to deliver the food.” “I see.” Jonathan knew Mabel was incapable of such a feat, so he wondered why he even bothered asking. Between the two of us, it's probably easier to believe that I'm the one
who can cook.
At that moment, Beatrix, too, came out of her room.
“Please have a seat, Ms. Lachman,” voiced Mabel courteously. “I hope the food is to your liking.” After everyone had taken their seat, Jonathan took a big gulp of beer.
“Just call me Beatrix. It sounds weird when you call me Ms.
Lachman,” said Beatrix to Mabel with a smile.
Smiling in kind, Mabel responded, “Sure!” “Here's a toast to you, Beatrix!” uttered Jonathan as he lifted his can. “Since this is our first time drinking together, we're not going anywhere until we're both drunk!” “And where do you plan to go when you are?” inquired Beatrix while looking at Jonathan, who was surprised by her dry humor.
However, the casual chat did not last long before Jonathan got serious and started discussing the baby ghost investigation.
“It may be a stupid plan, but it's a plan nonetheless. It sure beats sitting around doing nothing,” commented Beatrix, showing that she agreed with the idea by nodding.
“My people have just checked the hospitals nearby. The fact that the news of the Infant King going berserk has reached Yaleview means he's not far from the city,” stated Mabel.
To that, Jonathan nodded in agreement. “I think so too.” “For now, only one hospital meets the criteria. It's in Lightspring, and it's called Peacewood Hospital. However, the place will be shut down soon because of how terrible it's been doing,” informed Mabel.
“That's only natural. How do you expect it to do well when it's surrounded by negative energy and bad geomancy?” questioned Jonathan rhetorically.
Hence, Beatrix suggested, “Then let's not waste any more time. We'll go to Peacewood Hospital tonight.” “Okay. Most of the hospital's profit comes from those who
wish to get an abortion. Even now, many young women are hospitalized there,” said Mabel.
Since most people preferred to keep their abortions a secret, they would go to illegal clinics instead of reputable hospitals to avoid bumping into people they knew, so it was only natural that they had no problem getting the procedure done at Peacewood Hospital.
“We'll need someone with a Third Eye. Is Chief Yount coming with us?” inquired Jonathan.
“He can't come because he has other matters to attend to tonight.” After pausing for a while, Mabel added, “However, he told me how to activate one's Third Eye. All we have to do is apply Cow's Tears on our eyes, and we'll be able to see anything supernatural.” Jonathan scratched his head after hearing that. “How are we going to find Cow's Tears in Yaleview?” “Chief Yount's already asked someone to deliver it. | have it with me,” informed Mabel as she took out a small porcelain bottle.
“What we're about to do is pretty dangerous. | mean, what if we actually find the Infant King's subordinate? What's more important to Chief Yount than your life?” questioned Jonathan, who felt that they would be safer if Jeff tagged along because he knew the man's cultivation level was high enough to compete with that of the masters of Divine Realm.
On top of that, he was convinced that luck would not always side with him and that he had to be practical.
Nothing beats being prepared for the worst.
Mabel smiled somewhat bitterly while voicing, “As chief of a division at the Department of National Security, he has many confidential and important matters to attend to. | know he's already done all he can to help. Besides, we're just investigating tonight. We can get him to rush over when we have reliable information.” Seeing how understanding Mabel was, Jonathan decided to leave Jeff alone.
It was already six o'clock in the evening when they finished
their meal.
Since the sun set earlier in the north, the sky had already darkened when the three packed their things and went downstairs.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThen, they got into a military car, with Jonathan in the driver's seat and the women in the back.
Since Jonathan was the only man among the three, it was only natural that he should be the one driving.
Jonathan felt uneasy for some reason, so he turned to Mabel. “Can you get me a couple of high- explosive grenades?” “What do you want them for?” inquired Mabel, stunned by the request.
“To defend myself, of course! They are still pretty powerful even though experts would know how to avoid the explosion. | wonder what they'll do to spirits,” answered Jonathan, rendering both Mabel and Beatrix speechless.
“I don't think that's necessary,” stated Mabel. “We're looking for unborn baby ghosts. How powerful can they be?” Somehow, Jonathan became even more persistent after hearing Mabel. “It's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, | don't believe anyone can be too careful.” “Fine. However, this will take some time because of the paperwork,” uttered Mabel, preferring not to argue with Jonathan.
“That's fine. We can wait!” “Okay. Then drive to the west side of the military base first,” Mabel instructed Jonathan, who then immediately started the car.
It was ten o'clock at night when Jonathan and the others started making their way to Lightspring.
Jonathan only learned how strict the military was after seeing how much effort it took even for someone in Mabel's position to get the explosives.
She did not get the grenades until she had signed document after document.
However, it was understandable since it would be devastating if weapons as destructive as grenades were to fall into the wrong hands.
Like Jonathan, the military thought there was no such thing as being too careful.
Lightspring was less than one hundred kilometers away from Yaleview, and since Jonathan drove fast, the trio arrived at their destination in only an hour.
At eleven o'clock that night, there was no moon or star in the sky, just thick dark clouds.
Even though Lightspring was not as lively as Yaleview in the evening, its city lights were still quite impressive.
After finding Peacewood Hospital on the GPS, Jonathan drove straight to the place on the east side of Magpie Street, which was not too far from the city.
People of Lightspring called that location Styx Street because of a strange phenomenon there.
Even though there were two rows of hawkers doing
business and plenty of people, as soon as night fell, the left side of the street would be crowded, while the right became eerily empty.
Despite the fact that the two were only separated by a road, their difference in liveliness was a stark contrast.
Naturally, Peacewood Hospital was on the right side of that street.
The hospital, covering an area of three thousand square meters, had an underground parking lot, a dedicated medical research room, an inpatient department, and many other facilities.
Hence, Peacewood Hospital was considered a decent healthcare provider in Lightspring.
Unfortunately, it failed to do well because of the many medical accidents that happened over the years.
The hospital could only retain so many doctors since it barely had the financial means to stay open.
There were even rumors that nobody wanted to take over
the hospital despite the director's wish to sell it.
After all, many knew about Styx Street and the odd occurrence there.
Only tycoons could afford to take over such a large hospital, but they would not do so because most wealthy businessmen were incredibly superstitious.
That was not what Jonathan and the others were concerned about, of course.
After parking their car outside, the trio entered Peacewood Hospital freely since nobody was guarding the place.
Nobody even batted an eye when they walked in.
“The negative energy is at its strongest after midnight. I've already found out that a sixteen-year-old girl, who had to be hospitalized because she had an ectopic pregnancy and lost a lot of blood, is staying in room 308. The operation took three days, so if there's a baby ghost here, it should've been formed already. We'll observe in secret for now, and once it appears, we'll chase it away and follow it,” explained Jonathan.
Although it would be difficult to follow a baby ghost since it could fly, Jonathan and the others could lock on to it with their minds.
‘When Yasir reached the final stage of Nascent Soul, he used Distance Soul Lock to lock on to Jonathan, so naturally, Jonathan could utilize the same method since he had reached Celestial Soul.
Before long, the trio arrived in the corridor leading to room 308.
‘When they saw how dirty the corridor was, they could not help but wonder why the girl would agree to stay in a place like that. Does she not value her life? Her parents would be heartbroken to find her here. If the father of her child loves her, he should marry her. Otherwise, he should've used a condom! The least he can do is offer to pay for the girl's expenses and be there for her. Abortion is never the answer. The father may not be aware, but the procedure could introduce lifelong gynecological problems into the girl's life. On top of that, those who create baby ghosts will
not end well! How can the unborn baby, who had been looking forward to seeing the world, not be filled with hate when that chance gets taken away from them? ‘While the trio stood in the corridor, Beatrix voiced, “The positive energy on the three of us is too strong. Even if there's a baby ghost in there, it won't show itself if we get too near to the girl.” “Then what do we do?” inquired Jonathan. “We can't see it if we stay too far away.” “Leave it to me. I'll cover this entire place with my force field. If anything happens, we'll know,” replied Beatrix.
In response, Jonathan and Mabel gave Beatrix a surprised look before the man posed another question. “Are you sure you can cover a place this big with your force field, Beatrix?” “Of course!” With that, Beatrix led the others into a ward to hide.
