Chapter 337 A Critical Juncture
It was two o'clock in the morning right then.
Night in Mapleton was lively yet peaceful.
When Jonathan heard Vananeru's phone ring, he was slightly surprised and started wondering inwardly. Could it be that Master Methendriel discovered something, so he's calling?
In no time, the answer came to light.
It was precisely the matter he feared most that came to pass.
Glancing at her phone, Vananeru declared, “It's my father.” Then, she answered the call.
Jonathan knew there was some mysterious connection between Galad's Mitra primordial spirit and the man himself.
For that reason, the Mitra primordial spirit could see everything that was happening upon its appearance, and Galad would consequently find out about everything.
After the call was connected, Jonathan didn't perk up his ears to eavesdrop on the conversation. Instead, he was exceedingly careful in the face of the omnipotent holy master.
Vananeru chatted with Galad for a while before hanging up. A conflicted look showed on her face.
“What's wrong?” Jonathan asked at once.
“My father wants to meet you,” Vananeru admitted.
At that, Jonathan was startled. Naturally, that was merely an act on his part. Considering his composure, he could still remain expressionless even if the sky were to fall down before him. In reality, however, great turmoil was brewing within him.
With that said, Vananeru gazed at the man hopefully.
“Right now?” Jonathan clarified.
Vananeru bobbed her head in response.
“I don't know where I can go to get your father a gift at this hour,” Jonathan lamented anxiously.
Meanwhile, Vananeru was over the moon that he hadn't declined to meet her father and replied, “There's no need to prepare a gift. My father doesn't care about that. Besides, he was the one who suddenly wanted to meet you. Where would you go to buy a gift at this hour? He won't blame you.”
“While that's true, I've got to adhere to the basic social etiquette. I don't want to leave a bad impression on your father,” Jonathan insisted.
“In that case, let's go shopping together and see whether there's anything we can buy,” Vananeru suggested.
Nodding, Jonathan agreed, “Sure!”
Unexpectedly, Vananeru's expression abruptly changed. Her gaze turned frosty, and she uttered icily, “There's no need to prepare a gift. Come back quickly.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtIt was clear as day that Galad's primordial spirit had taken over her body.
A moment later, Vananeru reverted to her normal demeanor. Yet, she knew everything that had happened. Her father's primordial spirit was concealed within her forehead. And once she was in danger, it would assume control of her brain.
That was something the man expended tremendous effort to accomplish.
When that happened, her primordial spirit would observe everything at the side.
“I'm sorry, Jonathan. My father merely appears cold. In truth, he's pretty easy to get along with,” Vananeru murmured.
With a strange expression on his face, Jonathan ventured, “Is your father a deity?”
Unbidden, Vananeru was stunned. Only then did she realize that the scene earlier would have seemed somewhat incredulous to an ordinary person like him.
Bursting into laughter, she answered, “No, he's not a deity. However, he's incredibly powerful. In the future, we don't need to be afraid of being picked on anymore.”
“Well, that's great. But there's also a huge problem with this,” Jonathan remarked.
Immediately, Vananeru questioned in curiosity, “What's the huge problem?”
“Wouldn't we be left with no privacy, then? Your father will know everything we do. For instance, after we get married...” Jonathan pointed out, trailing off.
Vananeru promptly flushed bright red, mortified beyond words. “What nonsense are you spouting? My father's primordial spirit is usually in a state of deep slumber. It's only when I'm in danger does he make an appearance,” she huffed.
“How does he judge whether you're in danger?” Jonathan inquired, his curiosity piqued.
“He can sense when I'm terrified. That aside, he'll also emerge when I call out to him,” Vananeru revealed.
As understanding dawned upon Jonathan, and he commented, “It sounds a bit like the anime where one can summon the Gold Saints.”
Hearing that, Vananeru giggled.
Subsequently, Jonathan and Vananeru headed to Celestial Sky Monastery.
The two of them hailed a taxi.
Vananeru sensed that Jonathan was slightly tense, so she grasped his hand and assured, “It's okay. Everything will be fine with me here.”
Chuckling dryly, Jonathan noted, “Meeting the parents is nerve-racking in the first place, but more so when your father is a big shot.”
Honestly speaking, Vananeru could understand his feelings. In fact, she felt that she was putting him in a difficult situation to ask him to meet her father when they had just started dating.
Half an hour later, they arrived in front of Celestial Sky Monastery.
The structure of the building was magnificent, showcasing the grandeur of Barsm everywhere.
Under Vananeru's lead, Jonathan enjoyed smooth passage into the monastery without encountering any hindrance.
In actual fact, he wasn't apprehensive at all deep within him.
The more dangerous the situation, the calmer he was.
They were already close to where Mabel and the cacodemon were imprisoned, so whether he could rescue them in one fell swoop hinged on that moment.
Although he would be betraying Vananeru by doing so, he had no choice but to harden his heart.
Celestial Sky Monastery had both a main hall and a side hall.
The main hall was for Barsm believers, while the side hall was meant for the reception of important people.
However, Galad didn't receive Jonathan in the side hall. Instead, he did so in the meditation room.
As the matter that day had to do with his daughter's private affairs, it wasn't appropriate for them to meet in the side hall.
With a lama leading the way, Jonathan and Vananeru arrived before the meditation room.
“Father!” Vananeru called out softly in front of the meditation room.
“Come in.” Galad's voice drifted out, placid and seemingly carrying nary a hint of emotion.
At once, Vananeru pushed open the door.
She then entered the meditation room with Jonathan while the lama left.
Before leaving, the lama closed the door of the meditation room. In that instant, Jonathan officially laid eyes on the legendary holy master.
Galad wore a black shirt, his face devoid of expression. Yet, he emanated an invisible sense of terrifying majesty.
At the sight of him, Jonathan instinctively lowered his head.
He could sense that the man was far more powerful than Richard, Oswald, and the other masters.
But then, Galad was different from the Emperor of Chanaea and the rest. The Emperor of Chanaea gave off a sense of gentleness resembling a spring breeze without a hint of authority.
However, that was a state of inaction.
Water was invisible and had no shape, but it could change perpetually and was invincible.
“Father,” Vananeru greeted. Next, she introduced Jonathan to Galad, saying, “This is my boyfriend, Jonathan.” Throughout it all, she spoke in Thymionan.
In a flash, Galad's face darkened. He swept his gaze over Jonathan before booming, “Boyfriend? You've only known him for a day, but he's already your boyfriend? Vananeru, you're not such a reckless person in my eyes.”
As Galad likewise spoke in Thymionan, Jonathan couldn't understand a word of it.
Nonetheless, he could read people's expressions.
Holding her father's gaze, Vananeru admitted, “It's indeed a bit fast. But Father, you're no ordinary person either, so I think you should understand, right? Anyhow, I'm somewhat curious. Why do you seem to dislike Jonathan?”
“Vananeru, you're already at the age where you tend to fall in love. And I'm actually happy that you're doing so. However, I know your character. You're calm and composed to the point of being slightly aloof. Yet, you now made things official with a man in just a day. I can't help but think that something is off,” Galad explained.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmVananeru countered, “This is ridiculous. Love is just like chemistry. Once two reacting substances come into contact, there'll be a reaction. That has nothing to do with the length of time. Moreover, Father, I'm merely dating him. Our relationship has not reached the point of marriage yet. I think you're a bit too rash to summon him over today. As such, I hope you can be more polite to him.”
Sighing softly, Galad lamented, “From time immemorial, the truth has always been a bitter pill to swallow. Vananeru, I'm no ordinary man, and no one can deceive my eyes. Know that everything I do is for your good.”
“I believe every father does everything for the good of his daughter. But such good is not necessarily right. Do you agree?” Vananeru questioned.
Father and daughter talked at length in Thymionan while Jonathan remained wholly perplexed at the side.
In the next second, Galad turned to him and asked, “Can you speak Ustranasian?”
That utterance was in Ustranasian.
“Yes!” Jonathan answered immediately.
“What's your name?” Galad continued.
“I'm Jonathan,” Jonathan replied.
Then, Galad demanded, “Who exactly are you, and what's your motive in approaching my daughter?”
“I didn't approach your daughter, Mr. Methendriel. I just fell in love with Vananeru. Which man wouldn't like her when she's such a beautiful and kind girl?” Jonathan fibbed.
His expression darkening a shade, Galad queried, “You're Chanaean?”
With a nod, Jonathan answered honestly, “Yes.”
“Who's your father, and what is his profession?” Galad continued questioning.
“My father is Terrence Cadogan, the chairman of Foliage Fashion Group,” Jonathan lied without batting an eye.
“What a coincidence. The chairman of Foliage Fashion Group, Terrence Cadogan, came to Mapleton for a vacation last month. I only know that he has a daughter. I never heard that he has a son,” Galad commented mildly.
Smiling, Jonathan replied, “In that case, I'm afraid that the Terrence you met wasn't my father. Anyway, my father didn't come to Mapleton last month. Besides, I've got no sister. If you don't believe me, you can investigate Foliage Fashion Group.” Pausing briefly, he stated, “I officially extend an invitation to you. I hope you and Vananeru will go to Chanaea for a vacation and visit Foliage Fashion Group. I'm sure my father will be glad to see you both.”
He was as calm as ever.
After all, he had been through a myriad of trials and tribulations. Hence, he wasn't thrown off by the man.
Not only was he familiar with Foliage Fashion Group, but he was also acquainted with its chairman, Terrence Cadogan.
Even more interestingly, he had given the man a call beforehand.
Therefore, he wasn't afraid even if Galad wanted to visit Foliage Fashion Group.
At Jonathan's firm tone, Vananeru couldn't help breathing a sigh of relief. In truth, she couldn't quite tell whether her father was speaking the truth.
Galad fell silent. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off, but he couldn't exactly put his finger on it.
Just then, something unexpected happened.
Sounds of footsteps rang out outside, and they seemed frantic.
Subsequently, a man's voice drifted in from outside.
It was none other than the Great Sun Lama, Galad's junior.
