71 His New Routine
Bai Qi watched as his sister ate her noodle before deciding that it was time to return to the hospital. He stood at the door and watched as the little girl waved her hands at him.
“Xi Xi, you have your phone with you, right?” He couldn’t help but remind her again.
“Un.” The little girl raised the phone in her hand. “I know. If something happened, I will call you. Your number is the first on speed dial.”
A helpless sigh escaped him. His sister is so sensible. But he could not help but worry about her more. “Alright. Close the door and-”
“I know. You have your keys. I shouldn’t open the door to strangers.”
Bai Qi stretched his hand and patted her head. “Such a good girl. I will try to get home earlier. You know how to reheat the noodles in the microwave, right?”
The girl nodded again.
Although he could not bear to part with the little girl, He still have to return to the hospital before he could make trouble for the others.
When he arrived at the hospital, one of the junior doctors mentioned that his mentor was looking for him. There was an emergency case and the patient will need to go into the operational theatre soon.

Bai Qi went to look for his master before he was dragged to help with the surgery.
The patient’s condition was worse than they thought and the surgery lasted for a long time. After the surgery, Bai Qi followed his mentor to discuss the surgery.
When he came out of the office again, it was already late. After changing his clothes, he hurried back home to look for his sister.
The house was dark when he arrived. Bai Qi went panicking for a few seconds before he finally found his sister sleeping on the couch. In her hand, the little girl was holding on to her phone tightly to her chest.
His heart ached upon seeing this scene.
Bai Qi put down his bag at the side before walking over to his sister. Gently, he removed the phone from her hand and carried her back into her bedroom.
Once he tucked her into bed, Bai Qi left and stayed in the living room.
He couldn’t stop thinking of how his sister had suffered after she came to live with him. However, Xi Xi had always liked to stick to him from the day she was born.
Next week, he will start sending her to kindergarten.
He could not help but worry that he might not be able to manage between his job and looking after his sister.
But... After their parents had passed away, Xi Xi only had him. He cannot let her down. He had to do something.
...
On the day he sent Bai Xi Xi to the kindergarten, Bai Qi had tried to manage everything by himself. After sending his sister early in the morning, Bai Qi rushed out to work.
Seeing that it was time to pick up his sister, Bai Qi would take a few hours off to send her sister to Auntie Ji’s place before he rushed back to work.
This new routine lasted for a few days until Qi Zheng finally noticed what was going on.
When Bai Qi returned to the hospital, his colleague quickly notified him that his mentor was looking for him. Doctor Xu had also noticed how Bai Qi had often run off somewhere in the middle of the day and thought that his friend had finally got himself into trouble.
Seeing his friend leaving the room, Doctor Xu could not help but shot him a sympathetic look.
Bai Qi walked over to his mentor’s office and stopped in front of the door. Taking a deep breath, Bai Qi knocked on the door before entering.
Qi Zheng was in the middle of reading some report when he heard someone coming in. He raised his head and the look on his face turned serious when he saw Bai Qi.
There was a brief silence between them before Bai Qi spoke up. “Doctor Qi, you are looking for me?”
Waving his hand, Qi Zheng instructed the young man to close the door behind him before he let him sit down.

Bai Qi hesitated, wondering if he should tell his mentor about his situation.
“Are you in trouble?”
Qi Zheng had always thought that Bai Qi was a great kid. From the first time they worked together on that rescue mission a few years ago, Qi Zheng had always known that with good training and mentoring, this boy would become a great surgeon.
It would be fine if he had pulled this stunt once. However, Bai Qi has been missing around the same time for four days straight.
As Bai Qi’s mentor, it was Qi Zheng’s job to talk to him.
Qi Zheng narrowed his eyes and could not help but notice the fatigue in the young man’s face. A faint sigh escaped him and Qi Zheng began to lower his tone. “Bai Qi, if you’re in any trouble, you should have talked to me. As your mentor, I will help you in any way that I can.”
His lips parted as he was about to say something. However, Qi Zheng’s next words had stopped him from saying what was on his mind.
“Don’t say that you did not want to trouble me or anyone. Have you considered how you might trouble me or your colleague when you disappeared without telling anyone where you have been to?”
Bai Qi pursed his lips into a thin line as he listened to his mentor, lecturing him about how his action would cause trouble for his colleague.
His job was demanding and there would be times when he would be needed in the hospital. If an emergency occurred and he was not around, then he might cause a life to be lost.
It was not that he did not know that what he had done was wrong. It was just that... He wanted to prove to himself that he could handle everything by himself.
“Doctor Qi, I’m sorry.” Bai Qi heaved a heavy sigh. “You are right. I am in some kind of trouble at this moment. It’s... my little sister.” Taking a deep breath, he began to let his mentor know why his sister had to live with him.
