Chapter 1308 Wrong Company
"Why didn't you just call them home?" asked Mu Chenyan to Xia Zhao. "Why did we come to the tea house?"
Xia Zhao stopped and turned to look at her, "They first want to see you. I have said that already. Only after that, they'll go to see Uncle Tian."
Mu Chenyan held his arm, "Give me a minute."
Xia Zhao was amused by her reaction and couldn't help touching her head. "Why are you so nervous?"
"I'm not nervous!" she retorted. "I'm just not used to this. I have never cared about how people look at me. I have always taught the same to Raelle and Hyson too. But now, all of a sudden, I'm a bit unsure of myself."
"But you are my confident Yan Zi," he said gently. "How can you ever be unsure of yourself? Did I fail? Where is this uncertainty coming from? This is so not like you."
"It's my first time talking about getting married and having this 'meeting the parents' experience. You can't expect anything else from me right now. Your grandparents are even a generation older than my godfather. I have very little experience with people of their age group. The older generation isn't exactly my fan."
"How about you stop thinking and just come inside with me?" asked Xia Zhao. "You know, my grandparents called you here because they seem to have a history with this tea house. As I've told you, they are big fans of tea. So, the only thing that can make them excited is good tea. By that, you can tell how simple their requirements are. They are very easily satisfied in life."
Mu Chenyan gave him a look of disbelief, "Do you even believe what you just said?" Because she certainly didn't believe it for even a minute.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt"Yeah. Why not?" he asked.
"They like quality tea. Not just any tea. Otherwise, they wouldn't come all the way here for tea. Xinji produces one of the best teas. And you are telling me, they are easily satisfied?" She was someone knew that people who were particular about their tea were actually very particular about the people they liked too. It was something she observed. And she would never doubt in her own observation skills.
Xia Zhao argued with her over that and sighed, "How about we just go inside? Thinking won't help. And do you know what else won't help?"
"What?"
"Being late," he replied. "They happen to be very particular about time."
Mu Chenyan understood what he meant and nodded her head. She shook off all the random thoughts from her mind and walked entered the tea house. A young woman dressed in a qipao led them to the room where Xia Zhao's grandparents were. She brought them to the door and left.
Mu Chenyan didn't even look around but just followed Xia Zhao with her head lowered, with countless thoughts on her mind. It's not like she was new to this place so she had curiosity towards how this aged-old place looked.
Xia Zhao lifted his hand to knock but Mu Chenyan held him back when she heard the voices from inside.
"Lao Xia, can you do better than that?" came an elderly woman's voice from inside.
"Is this still not good? I think I have a pretty good smile," replied the elderly man.
"I think you are planning on scaring away my granddaughter-in-law with that smile of yours. I told you to look kind and gentle. That's how old people look."
"The old people I know don't look like that."
"You have the company of the wrong people."
"You're calling my family the wrong company?" The elderly man paused and added, "Oh, wait! I spent most of my time in your company. What would you say about that, my pretty Hui."
"You better not call me that in front of my granddaughter-in-law. I'll be so embarrassed."
"But you loved it when I said it before."
"You were chasing me back then. It was different!"
"Indeed, it was different."
"Wait! Did you just say I am the wrong company?"
"Um... No."
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Lao Xia, you're getting worse with age." The elderly woam sighed tiredly. "Okay, stop it. Just try again. This time think about something pleasant. Smile kindly. Make your eyes look gentle."
"How to do that now? How am I supposed to make both my lips and my eyes listen to my instructions at the same time?"
Mu Chenyan pursed her lips to hold back her smile. All her uneasiness from earlier had been forgotten. It seemed she should have believed Xia Zhao's words when he said his grandparents were very cute and easy to get along with. Xia Zhao rubbed his forehead. He did not think they would run into this. He didn't even want to look at Mu Chenyan right now. He was embarrassed for his grandparents right now.
"I think, Hui, let's forget it, eh? I'm not the kind, gentle, and saintly old man. That's not me. You're asking me to pretend to be someone I am not. It's almost like deceiving people. Let's be what we are in front of our granddaughter-in-law. And we already know she isn't some faint hearted little girl. She is a strong and brave woman. I think she will be able to accept us as we are."
"Aren't I just trying to make a better first impression?"
"But it's difficult. I give up!"
"You didn't even give up when my father put forward seven challenges for you."
"I wanted to get my wife. And I could do anything for that."
"Now, it's your granddaughter-in-law. Can't you put in some effort?"
"It's not me who is needed to put in effort. It's that useless grandson of yours who took decades to bring us this granddaughter-in-law."
"Don't complain about my grandson! Or you'll be getting the cold and silent treatment from me."
Xia Zhao couldn't hear anymore and knocked on the door before announcing, "We are here!" He looked at Mu Chenyan's smiling eyes and held her hand to take her in.
