Selena smiled, and Everett's upset stomach, which had just started to soothe, suddenly clenched again. He frowned, leaning in with a serious tone. "Selena, I'm your husband. Who will you talk to if you won't open up to me?" His voice dropped to a more intense, almost brooding pitch on those last few words.
Selena nodded. "Oh, a husband whose heart is with another woman? How exactly am I supposed to talk to you?" Hadn't she tried to talk enough over the past three years? She even felt like she'd topped the list of women with hopeless efforts.
Everett was left without words.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtSelena, quite used to this by now, didn't bother saying anything more. She quietly cleared the table and headed back to her room alone.
She climbed back into her bed and shut her eyes. She didn't know whether Everett returned or not. By the tshe opened her eyes again, daylight was streaming in. She glanced at the bed. The jerk was nowhere to be seen. Selena needed to visit her parents' graves up on the hill, so she didn't dawdle. She got up swiftly, tidied up her bed, put on a headband, and stepped outside to freshen up.
Breakfast was all set, featuring all of Selena's favorites from the local breakfast carts back home.
She pulled out a chair and sat down, the mouthwatering aroma lifting her spirits. Truly, good food is the best mood lifter.
Selena picked up a bagel, took a bite, and followed it with a sip of chocolate milk, feeling her energy return in full swing.
She flashed a big heart gesture at Marian. "Marian, you really get me. This is amazing." Marian chuckled and shook her head. "I can't take the credit this time. Everett heard you liked these and went out early to grab them for you. You should be thanking him." "Cough..." Selena choked slightly, her eyes widening as she glanced at the expressionless man beside her.
She vividly remembered the last the caught her grabbing breakfast from a street vendor and the scornful look he gave her.
Wasn't he the one who always hated her eating this kind of stuff? And now he was buying it for her? Was he out of his mind? Everett, seeming to catch her train of thought, glanced over and said coolly, "You like them, don't you?" This was just surreal. But with Grace and Marian around, Selena had to swallow her endless questions and managed a "sweet" smile, "Thanks, hubby." Marian winked and laughed. "Grace, see how much Everett cares for Selena? You can relax now, don't you think?" Grace nodded eagerly, her dentures nearly slipping from her wide smile. She said with deep satisfaction, "I just hope you two are happy. That's all that matters." After breakfast, Selena and Everett headed up the hill to Wyatt and Tasha's grave. She gazed at her parents' photos, their smiles frozen in time. Her eyes welled up with tears.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmIf her parents were still alive, she would have been such a happy girl. Maybe she wouldn't have met Everett, wouldn't have married him, and wouldn't have ended up so bruised by love.
Selena didn't call for Everett. She closed her eyes and prayed on her own.
If not for fear of raising Grace's suspicions, she wouldn't have brought him along at all.
Everett watched her, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as he stared at the back of her head. He said with a hint of dissatisfaction in his voice, "Selena, aren't you going to introduce me?"
Bewildered by his need to be noticed, Selena felt the urge to smack him! el right there in front of her parents. Yet, Everett pressed, "Con, hurry up."
Holding back the urge to roll her eyes, Selena finally spoke up, as she did not want to start a fight in front of her parents' grave. "Dad, Mom, this is Everett, my ex-husband."
