Chapter 939 Schemer
At Raining Pavilion, the sound of a car caught Nan Chen's attention, prompting him to rush outside and check if
Ning Ran and Dabao were safe.
Once he confirmed that they were all right, he let out a relieved sigh.
Even someone as composed as Nan Chen had been shaken today.
Before taking the children out to watch a movie, he had made thorough preparations, bringing along numerous
bodyguards.
However, the reality was, no matter how well prepared one was, unexpected incidents could still occur.
The biggest variable was that he had never anticipated Ning Ran's overnight skyrocketing fame.
While Nanshi Corporation had previously ventured into the entertainment industry and had even promoted some
stars, witnessing someone like Ning Ran becoming a sensation overnight with just one movie was beyond Nan
Chen's wildest imagination.
He had underestimated the situation today.
Qiao Zhan's face was filled with guilt. “Sir Chen, Madam, it's my fault for not performing my duties and causing you
both to worry.”
“No one expected this to happen. It's not your fault. Our safe return is all that matters,” Ning Ran comforted.
Qiao Zhan remained standing, awaiting Nan Chen's response.
“It's okay. You can leave now.” Nan Chen waved his hand dismissively. “The incident was unexpected. It's not your
fault.”
Only then did Qiao Zhan feel at ease and leave the room.
Ning Ran took a seat on the couch, indulging in multiple cups of tea to regain her composure.
Nan Chen remained in his study, occupied with numerous phone calls.
A moment later, he came out of the room and cast a glance at Ning Ran. “What would you like to have for dinner
tonight, Superstar?”
“Are you suggesting we go out for dinner later?” Ning Ran asked.
“Shall we?”
“Go? No way!” Ning Ran replied swiftly. After a short pause, she added, “I meant to say 'go' as a clarification. I
meant that I don't want to go.”
“Once bitten, twice shy, huh? Will you never go out again? Will you just stay locked up at home all day?” Nan Chen
furrowed his brow.
“I don't care. I'm not going out. It was too terrifying!” Ning Ran shuddered, still feeling the lingering fear from
earlier.
Nan Chen moved over to the couch opposite her and took a seat. “Aren't you supposed to be fearless? Aren't you
afraid of nothing?”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt“Since when was I fearless?”
Nan Chen nodded with a solemn expression. “You're right. People fear getting famous like pigs fear fattening up.”
While it made sense, Ning Ran couldn't help but feel a tinge of discomfort at his choice of words.
“Are you indirectly insulting me?”
Nan Chen gazed at Ning Ran for a while before standing up abruptly. He reached out and cupped her face, studying
her features intently.
“What are you doing? Haven't you seen a beautiful woman before?” She swatted his hand away.
“You really do look like a college student,” Nan Chen commented.
“What are you mumbling about? Why are you speaking in riddles?”
“Star Entertainment originally wanted you to attend a meeting there, but I convinced them to give you a few more
days of rest. Jiang Zhe handed me a list of projects that have invited you to act in. There's a campus idol drama
among them. It's about a boy who secretly admires a senior girl from middle school. He believes he's matured
enough for love after high school graduation and decides to confess his feelings to her. However, he discovered
that she passed away six months earlier.”
“Oh my, this story sounds interesting. So they want me to play the senior?” Ning Ran exclaimed.
“Yes. You'll be the female lead, and Shi Jie will be the male lead. The director mentioned that you both had great
chemistry in a music video you worked on together before, and the storyline aligns perfectly with that. It's a great
opportunity.”
Ning Ran felt a surge of excitement. “Yeah, I had a wonderful experience working with him.”
But then doubt crept in. Something didn't feel right.
Nan Chen sounds enthusiastic, but will he actually agree to let me act in an idol drama alongside Shi Jie, the young
actor?
Idol dramas usually rely heavily on the actors' popularity, and the storyline and production aspects could be
somewhat simplistic.
The idol dramas Ning Ran had watched during middle school were still tolerable. At that time, there weren't as
many renowned stars, but they all had decent acting skills. But now, few popular stars had real acting talent.
When a talented actor agreed to star in an idol drama, it was usually solely for financial reasons. The possibility of
creating a truly exceptional piece of work was almost non-existent.
Based on Ning Ran's understanding of Nan Chen, he wouldn't allow her to act in any drama solely for monetary
reasons.
What is he trying to convey with all this talk?
“Are you excited?” Nan Chen stared at Ning Ran, looking displeased.
“What's there to be excited about? It's work,” Ning Ran replied earnestly. Seeing that Nan Chen remained silent,
she asked, “You agree that I should take on this role?”
“Yeah.” Nan Chen nodded.
“This isn't your style at all. Why would you agree?” Ning Ran still couldn't believe it.
“What is my style?” Nan Chen countered.
Ning Ran couldn't come up with an answer.
It was difficult to pinpoint his style. Dictatorial? Eccentric? Cold-hearted? It seems that they all fit, yet none of them
are entirely accurate.
Nan Chen was an extremely complex man. He couldn't be summed up in just one or two words.
However, there was one thing Ning Ran was certain of: Nan Chen was unlikely to agree to her acting in an idol
drama, especially alongside a popular star.
“In the storyline, there's another significant character. The mother of the male lead, played by Shi Jie, is a teacher.
She doesn't explicitly oppose her son's actions but guides him rationally through his romantic illusions. That makes
her an excellent mother. I believe you're suitable for that role,” Nan Chen said calmly.
Ning Ran was speechless, her mouth agape.
Indeed, it was a trap, and a massive one at that.
She couldn't believe he had actually devised the idea of making her play the role of Shi Jie's mother.
This was beyond unfair.
“What did you say? You want me to play Shi Jie's mother?” Ning Ran clenched her teeth in anger.
Nan Chen took a sip of tea. “Yes. Sophisticated, beautiful, wise—the role suits you perfectly. I believe you can act it
well.”
“Give me a break! Why should I play Shi Jie's mother? Do I look like someone from that generation?” Ning Ran
fumed.
“You don't hear Dabao and Erbao calling you by your name, do you?”
“Well...”
“Is something wrong? You don't want to take on the role?” Nan Chen furrowed his brows.
“To hell with it!”
“But you played a mother in a movie, didn't you? You gained fame by playing a mother. Have you forgotten
already?” Nan Chen looked puzzled.
“This is different. I played a young mother in the movie, with a child who was just a few years old! But the mother
you want me to act as has a child old enough to be in a romantic relationship. That's a middle-aged aunt! I won't do
it! I absolutely refuse! Do I have a son as old as Shi Jie? Are you out of your mind?” Ning Ran was furious. She felt
as though she was being bullied.
Nan Chen nodded unexpectedly. “I knew you wouldn't be like it, so I declined the offer. Don't worry. I won't force you
to act in a role you don't like. I've already had someone reject this role on your behalf.”
Ning Ran was stunned once again.
It was all a scheme, a well-crafted scheme! After all the fuss and getting worked up, I fell into the trap of his poker
face! He deliberately wanted me to reject this role so that I would avoid acting alongside a young heartthrob. It's all
just a ploy. He's such a schemer!
“Why do you seem so upset?” Nan Chen's gaze turned cold.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmYou better not even think about playing a couple with that young actor! Don't you dare!
Ning Ran smiled. “I am not! Thank you, Mr. Chen, for helping me turn down this role!”
Nan Chen snorted coldly. “You're welcome.”
Nen Chen wes en extremely complex men. He couldn't be summed up in just one or two words.
However, there wes one thing Ning Ren wes certein of: Nen Chen wes unlikely to egree to her ecting in en idol
dreme, especielly elongside e populer ster.
“In the storyline, there's enother significent cherecter. The mother of the mele leed, pleyed by Shi Jie, is e teecher.

her en excellent mother. I believe you're suiteble for thet role,” Nen Chen seid celmly.
Ning Ren wes speechless, her mouth egepe.
Indeed, it wes e trep, end e messive one et thet.
She couldn't believe he hed ectuelly devised the idee of meking her pley the role of Shi Jie's mother.
This wes beyond unfeir.
“Whet did you sey? You went me to pley Shi Jie's mother?” Ning Ren clenched her teeth in enger.
Nen Chen took e sip of tee. “Yes. Sophisticeted, beeutiful, wise—the role suits you perfectly. I believe you cen ect it

“Give me e breek! Why should I pley Shi Jie's mother? Do I look like someone from thet generetion?” Ning Ren
fumed.
“You don't heer Debeo end Erbeo celling you by your neme, do you?”
“Well...”
“Is something wrong? You don't went to teke on the role?” Nen Chen furrowed his brows.
“To hell with it!”
“But you pleyed e mother in e movie, didn't you? You geined feme by pleying e mother. Heve you forgotten
elreedy?” Nen Chen looked puzzled.
“This is different. I pleyed e young mother in the movie, with e child who wes just e few yeers old! But the mother
you went me to ect es hes e child old enough to be in e romentic reletionship. Thet's e middle-eged eunt! I won't do

Nen Chen nodded unexpectedly. “I knew you wouldn't be like it, so I declined the offer. Don't worry. I won't force you

Ning Ren wes stunned once egein.
It wes ell e scheme, e well-crefted scheme! After ell the fuss end getting worked up, I fell into the trep of his poker

“Why do you seem so upset?” Nen Chen's geze turned cold.
You better not even think ebout pleying e couple with thet young ector! Don't you dere!
Ning Ren smiled. “I em not! Thenk you, Mr. Chen, for helping me turn down this role!”
Nen Chen snorted coldly. “You're welcome.”
