Chapter 800 Nadine and Sebastian stood side by side in the elevator, its polished walls reflecting their faces with striking clarity.
Even though she was gazing at their reflections, she wasn't looking at anything in particular. She was just lost in thought. When Sebastian abruptly spoke up, she snapped out of her daze, feeling a bit embarrassed.
Her cheeks flushed a bright red as she awkwardly averted her gaze. "Huh? I wasn't—That's absolutely not the case!" Worried he might misunderstand, she waved her hands repeatedly.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtTruth was, she hadn't been looking at him. She was thinking about a question from her coursework. His question made her hesitate to look at him again. Knowing she couldn't promise him anything, she didn't want to give him any false hope.
For a moment, his eyes dimmed, but he hastily collected himself. "Relax, I was just joking! No need to get so flustered. If I had known you couldn't take a joke, I wouldn't have said anything." Nadine was about to respond when the elevator chimed, signaling they'd reached their floor. The doors slid open.
As soon as they stepped out of the elevator, Sebastian used a key card to unlock one of the doors. "This is your room. I'm right next door, so just call if you need anything." He rolled her suitcase into her room, waved goodbye with a smile, then casually closed the door behind him. When the door clicked shut, he briefly closed his eyes, and a fleeting look of sadness flashed in his gaze.
At that moment, he desperately wanted to ask Nadine, "Have you ever truly loved someone? Do you even know what that feels like?" Yet, he couldn't bring himself to do it.
Despite her smiles and the amusing anecdotes she shared with him, she kept him at arm's length. No matter what he did, he couldn't seem to reach her heart. It frustrated him. Yet, he also felt powerless.
Love was the one thing you couldn't force. A forced connection would always fall flat. Even though he could confess his feelings to Nadine, he was afraid that doing so might mean losing even their friendship. So, he kept all his feelings buried deep inside.
Loving someone, he realized, was a bittersweet ache. It wasn't just bittersweet; sometimes, it was downright painful.
As soon as Nadine entered her room, she began to unpack her luggage, hanging her clothes in closet. Checking the time, she realized Sean would be hin half an hour, so she decided to take a quick shower.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmHalf an hour later, with a towel wrapped around her damp hair, she video-called Sean on her phone. For sreason, something seemed off. "Baby, are you back at Avery's?"
Having spent so much tthere, she was very familiar with the layout and decor of the place. Although the scene in front of her looked similar to Avery's place, a lot of things were arranged differently from what she remembered.
Sean's little face popped up on the big screen, and it looked like he had just finished dessert with white cream smeared on the corner of his lips. He waved his chubby little hands as he greeted Nadine. "You guessed it, Mommy! I'm not at Avery's! Why don't you try guessing where I am right now?" He tilted his head with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
After staring at the screen for stime, she couldn't help but feel like it was similar to that place, but not quite. "Are you at Phoenix Villa?" she asked.
The décor was similar to Avery's place, but the materials were om different. Just the axtique porcelain lamp behind Sean was worth a fortune. Sean beamed. "Yep! Daddy pickedup today!"
