Chapter 1867 On his wedding day, Colby started making a video. He was worried that he might leave this world before Sophie. Like many guys his age, he wasn't tech-savvy at all. He never really took to using a phone. He wasn't curious about the world and didn't feel like connecting with others through technology. But Sophie was different.
In his phone contacts, Sophie was the only one with a name. At twenty-six, Colby fell head over heels for her. He was clueless about how to woo a girl. All he could do was fumble his way through, learning bit by bit. Love was never his strong suit; he just wanted to get her attention somehow. It felt like the only way to have any connection with her.
He often trailed behind her, watching her go about her day at school. During the day, he watched her in the hustle and bustle of campus life. At night, he had to deal with spretty unsavory stuff. He always felt like he wasn't good enough for her. She was so full of life and sunshine. But sometimes, he felt like they were cut from the scloth.
At twenty-eight, Colby married the woman of his dreams. Sitting on the couch, he spoke to the camera, finally letting out the words he'd kept bottled up. "Sophie, it's the day before our wedding, and I haven't slept a wink. I never thought I'd be the kind of guy who gets to marry. You're the love of my life, the only woman I've ever loved." "After tomorrow, you'll be my wife, and I promise to take care of you and cherish you forever." "If one day I'm not around, I hope these videos will keep you company on your journey." At thirty-eight, Colby said, "Honey, we've just hit our tenth anniversary, and I love you just as much." At forty-eight, he said, "Honey, our daughter's all grown up, and now we finally have tfor just us. I still love you." At fifty-eight, he said, "Honey, retirement's just around the corner. Even though we're getting on in years, I want to travel the world with you, to places we've never been. This world is so big, and I only want to explore it with you." At sixty-eight, he said, "Honey, I've made so many tapes for you, they're filling up the storage. I feel like my tmight be running out. I don't know how much longer I've got, maybe seven or eight years, maybe more. If one day I'm gone, no one's gonna bring you your favorite pastries. I don't trust anyone else to take care of you, so every morning, someone will deliver breakfast to you just think of it asbeing away on a trip, still loving you..." "Honey, I love you." In a cozy little cabin in the woods, Sophie gently closed Colby's eyes. In her old age, she watched those tapes and smiled at her daughter, saying, "Look, your dad was so handswhen he was young. I picked right." Her daughter, eyes red with tears she tried to hold back, smiled, "Yeah, Dad was really handsome. I never noticed it back then." "But that silly man, he never said all this to me."
Sophie chuckled softly and said, "I've always wanted to let him do his thing, but what can I say? I'm the type who likes to hold tight to what I love. Even in death, I'll keep tabs on him."
After all, in this world, she was the only one who could keep Colby in line.
The day before the funeral, Sophie quietly left this world. In a dreamlike haze, Colby appeared just as he did when they first met, smiling and reaching out his hand to her.
