Granny is such a nice person, and she loves me so much…
All of a sudden, Winnie yearned to have a taste of Jacinta’s mashed potatoes.
“Okay. It’s been a long while since I last had it. I kind of miss it.”
“Okay. Go and wash your hands. It’ll be done soon.”
Jacinta immediately headed to the kitchen after speaking.
Winnie placed her bag on the couch and picked up Jacinta’s phone.
The password of Jacinta’s phone was simple. Winnie typed the numbers one to six and easily unlocked
it.
However, when the phone was unlocked, she realized that the call log was empty.
Yet, that was enough to cause her heart to sink, for that proved there was something fishy with
Jacinta’s call logs.
Normally, old people will not clear their call logs or photos, but since the call log is empty, it’s obvious
that Granny had cleared them. But why would she do so? What secret is she hiding? Does she know
what I’ve been doing all along?
Distracted by her thoughts, Winnie went to wash her hands.
She then wanted to help out in the kitchen, but Jacinta chased her out.
In the end, she could only wait quietly by the table.
Back when she was young, she also used to wait for her grandmother to prepare delicious dishes just
like how she did at present. Her eyes would sparkle with anticipation every time she waited.
However, at that moment, there was an indescribable feeling in her heart.
Jacinta soon walked out with a huge pot, and as soon as she set the pot down on the table, Winnie
could smell the familiar scent of mashed potatoes and gravy.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtTears instantly fell from her eyes while she stared at the dish that she used to love.
Jacinta was shocked upon seeing her granddaughter’s tears. “What’s going on? Why are you crying?”
Winnie hurriedly wiped away her tears.
Ever since she had grown to become an adult, she no longer allowed herself to cry.
However, she was unable to control her tears at that instant.
“I’m fine, Granny. It’s just that I’m suddenly reminded of how we used to rely solely on each other in the
past. Back then, we didn’t have a lot of desires or ambitions. Just a simple dish of mashed potatoes
and gravy was enough to make us happy.”
“What are you talking about? Why the sudden tears? Did something bad happen today? Tell me.
Although I may not be of much help, you’ll feel better if you tell me.”
Winnie lowered her head and helped herself to some mashed potatoes as tears welled in her eyes.
“Granny, can I tell you a story?”
“Sure! Go ahead, I’m listening.”
“Okay, I’ll tell you after I finish my food.”
Subsequently, she began stuffing spoonful after spoonful of mashed potatoes into her mouth.
Jacinta was worried when she saw Winnie eating in such a hurry. “Slow down, or you’ll choke.”
“I just want to take a few more bites.”
“Why are you in such a hurry? I can still make this for you in the future.”
Winnie paused in her tracks when she heard her grandmother’s words.
A few seconds later, she placed her spoon down and began, “Granny, someone told me a story today.
There was once a pitiful young lady who had been manipulated by her greedy parents who made her
give birth to a rich man’s child. When the child was born, the lady’s parents sold the child in exchange
for money and made the lady marry an abusive man. The lady lived a terrible life, but she soon
remarried. She had an adoptive daughter and granddaughter. However, unfortunately, her adoptive
daughter met a horrible man and was killed. Left with no other choice, the lady could only live with her
granddaughter. As days passed, their lives slowly got better. Yet one day, everything changed. The lady
found her biological son and grandchild. However, her biological son and grandchild were not treated
fairly in a wealthy family, so she did some bad things. She seemed to harbor some hatred for that rich
man, and she hated everyone in that man’s family. So, she burned down the rich man’s house and let
her biological grandchild, who had committed a crime, get away scot-free. Granny, I heard this story
from someone else. Do you think that the lady had made the right choice?”
When Winnie was talking, she observed Jacinta’s expression.
Initially, she assumed that Jacinta would express shock or even get angry.
However, the older woman was merely briefly stupefied before her expression turned frigid.
“Winnie, where did you hear this story from? It’s all over the place. Furthermore, this is someone else’s
problem. We don’t know what she has experienced, so how can we possibly judge if she has made the
right choice or not?”
Winnie stared at Jacinta and said, “We can’t? Is it right to set a house on fire? Is it right to help an evil
man get away scot-free?”
Jacinta was rendered speechless by Winnie’s questions. She stared at Winnie with mixed feelings for a
long while before saying annoyedly, “It’s wrong. It’s all wrong. What’s wrong with you today? Why are
you behaving like this just because of a story? Are you still going to eat? If not, I’ll go and do the
dishes. Oh, forget it, you should stop eating. The food has gone cold. You’ll get a stomach ache.”
Jacinta then grabbed the plate and utensils Winnie was using before heading to the kitchen.
Turning the tap on to the maximum, she allowed the loud noise of running water to fill the entire house.
It was as if she was trying to isolate herself from the rest of the world.
Winnie was upset as well, thinking that the tentative questions she had asked ended up making the
atmosphere tense.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmWanting to get some fresh air, she walked out to the balcony.
The lights on the balcony were switched on. As she stood by the window, she noticed a scratch mark
on the window sill.
Since she had never seen that mark before, she found it peculiar.
This mark could only be caused by a heavy object. Who would place a heavy object on the windowsill?
For some reason, she was suddenly reminded of the day when Xavier had almost been hit by a falling
flowerpot that came out of nowhere.
As she thought about it, her heart sank.
She examined the mark and found some traces of soil in a corner.
There aren’t any flowers. Why would there be soil?
After standing on the balcony for a few minutes in a daze, she rushed into Jacinta’s room and
inspected every corner of the room carefully.
In the end, she found traces of soil in Jacinta’s wardrobe.
This is weird! Her wardrobe should be clean and tidy, but there’s soil here! This does not make sense
at all!
Winnie could not believe her eyes. She stood rooted to the spot for a long while before collecting the
soil.
After doing so, she could no longer wait, so she gave Josiah a call and summoned him over.
As she was worried about leaving Jacinta home alone that night, she passed the soil samples to
Josiah.
The flowerpot’s fragments and soil were still preserved. She needed Josiah to run a test on the two soil
samples that she found and determine whether they were from the same flowerpot that almost fell on
Xavier’s head.
