“We were surprised about the fact that they chose Avenport, but we figured out afterward that they
probably wanted to pack the Alpha radioactive gas in separate containers and take them away. Or
perhaps, they have more than just one buyer in the first place. Coincidentally, there are a few chemical
plants at the juncture of Avenport and its neighboring state, and one of them is abandoned. We suspect
that they will be packing the Alpha radioactive gas in one of those chemical plants. The plants belong
to Fairchild Corporation and Garland Group, which was why we asked you to come here today to help
us. Although we could step in and evacuate the staff, this would surely alert the terrorists. Worse, they
might even be provoked. So, we hope you cooperate with us and find a way to evacuate the workers in
the chemical plants. As for the losses you will incur, I will talk to my higher-ups and request—”
“There’s no need for that,” Xavier interjected before James could finish his words. “We’ll cooperate with
you, and we will shoulder the losses that will occur from this.”
This was the decision Xavier and Winnie made unanimously after exchanging glances.
It was their responsibility as good citizens to contribute to the maintenance of public order.
Evacuating the workers was a basic act of respect toward life. In the face of human lives, monetary
losses were insignificant.
“All right.” James nodded at Winnie and Xavier. “Thank you for making sacrifices for the greater good.
Well, I’m done talking. Can you tell me what’s going on with your side currently?”
With his brows scrunched, David piped up, “Let me update you on that. This is what happened.”
Then, he summarized that day’s incidents for James.
After listening to David, James remarked, “The Special Task Force already set off in the morning.
According to what you told me, Harold personally went to Garland Group this morning to deliver
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtsomething. In that case, it would be impossible for him to track Ms. Marsh unless he had put a tracker
on her in advance. However, before the Special Task Force members left, we did a thorough inspection
of the equipment they had on them. If Ms. Marsh really had a special electronic device on her, we
would have intercepted it. But as of now, I haven’t received any reports on it.”
Winnie knitted her eyebrows and raised a question. “But what if… what if the person who delivered the
package was someone else and not Harold?” She went on, “Harold may have undergone plastic
surgery, so we don’t even know what he looks like at the moment. If the person who went to Garland
Group this morning is not Harold, then the latter might have been keeping his eye on Lisanne since last
night. He has earned quite a fortune in the past few years and gathered a big group of subordinates,
and there are lots of fearless guys willing to risk their lives for him. Besides, he has always been hiding
in the dark. We have no idea who his informant is. The Special Task Force deals with all kinds of
vicious terrorists, so they are constantly in danger. As if that weren’t enough, they now have Harold,
who’s waiting to pounce on them. I’m really worried about my friend. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that
she is powerless.”
“What you said makes sense. However, this is a crucial moment where one single step can trigger
severe consequences. It’s impossible for us to make the Special Task Force return. Judging from the
current situation, the only thing we can do is send a backup to capture Harold as soon as possible. We
hope you understand,” James uttered with a serious expression.
Winnie nodded. “We do.”
“All right.” After casting Winnie another glance, James added, “By the way, I hope you don’t involve
yourselves in this. It’s very dangerous, after all.”
Winnie immediately agreed, “Okay. We’ll take care of the matters related to the chemical plants. Officer
Clark, I’ll put my trust in you and leave the rest of the matter in your hands.”
Since she was not a professional in dealing with criminals, Winnie did not wish to create trouble for the
police.
“Okay, thank you for your cooperation. Just leave the rest to us.” With that, James stood up and shook
hands with Winnie and Xavier. “I have to arrange a new plan immediately, so I won’t be seeing you out.
I will notify you right away once we ensure Ms. Marsh’s safety.”
With that, Winnie, Xavier, and David bade James goodbye. Right when they walked out of James’
office, Winnie received a text.
Upon reading its contents, she furrowed her brows and stopped in her tracks, catching David’s
attention.
He turned around and inquired, “What’s wrong?”
“Harold has taken the initiative to contact me.” While Winnie said that, she passed her phone to David.
At the sight of the way of address at the beginning of the text message, David frowned.
“Dear Winnie?” He read the two words aloud, feeling puzzled. “Ms. Garland, are you sure this message
is from Harold? This number seems to be a virtual number from the internet. Besides, why would he
address you this way?”
“It’s a long story. I put up an act in front of him back then to gain his trust. I’m sure this text is from him,”
Winnie insisted.
“If that is true, then this is bad. Let’s go back and talk to Officer Clark.”
In no time, they knocked on James’ door again.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmWhen they entered, he had just finished talking to someone on the phone.
“What happened?” he questioned upon seeing everyone’s stern expressions.
Winnie explained, “Harold asked me to get a GPS from the science academy. He told me to follow the
route he placed in there and go somewhere, or he’ll detonate the bomb. I have twenty minutes to do
that.”
“This is outrageous!” James slammed the table. “It takes around fifteen minutes to get to the science
academy from here. It would be best if you left now. I’ll ask the technical team to follow you.”
As they had little time, Winnie and the two men headed straight to the science academy without saying
anything else.
She followed Harold’s instructions in the text and soon found a GPS in the bushes near the science
academy’s fence wall.
Soon after Winnie turned on the device, Harold’s message arrived: You’re quite fast. It seems like my
first bomb is useless now. Now, drive and follow the route I planned. I can track your location, so don’t
think of pulling any tricks on me.
Winnie clutched the GPS tightly and got into the car.
However, she did not leave immediately. After a few minutes, James showed up with his colleagues
from the technical team.
They checked the GPS, but unfortunately, they could not figure out the location of the person
controlling the device.
The only thing they could do now was to follow Winnie and monitor her movements.
