Chapter 408 One Lucky Fellow
“Winnie, that’s what I want to talk to you about.” Wilhelm paused for a beat before continuing, “I already
found them. Your friend, Lisanne, sustained some minor injuries but nothing serious. However, Xavier
isn’t doing very well. He was already unconscious when we found him. I still don’t know his exact
condition because the doctors are still checking him at the hospital.”
Winnie was slightly relieved at hearing Xavier was alive but still anxious about not knowing his exact
condition.
Immediately, she blurted out without hesitation, “I’ll head over there now!”
Before hanging up, she urged, “The medical facilities there aren’t good, so you must send him to the best
hospital and allocate the best doctors. I can’t be by his side now, so you have to take care of him for me.
After going through so much to get him out, we can’t afford any mistakes now.”
“Don’t worry, Winnie. I’ll take care of him.” It was Wilhelm’s first time witnessing his sister worrying over
another person’s safety to the extent of losing her mind. He didn’t know if that was a good or bad sign.
Despite his concerns, he still promised her, “Xavier is your man. I’ll do my very best for your future
happiness, so rest assured since I’ll be here. It isn’t convenient for you to rush over here with your eyes’
current condition. You know as well as I do that the medical facilities here aren’t that good. Once the
doctors determine Xavier’s condition has stabilized enough for a transfer, I’ll immediately arrange his
transport back to Avenport. I’ll deliver him to you with all his limbs intact and functional. He’ll be fine, I
promise.”
“No.” Winnie suddenly clenched her fingers over her chest. “I don’t know why I’m feeling uneasy about
this. I want to be by his side. I know he needs me.”
“Winnie, Xavier should not be in critical condition now. If I were him, I wouldn’t want you to put your
health and safety on the line just to come to my side. Listen to me. Wait for my news, okay?” Wilhelm
coaxed.
Josiah, who heard everything, also joined Wilhelm in persuading Winnie, “Yeah, your brother is right.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtLet’s wait for an update. It’ll only be a few hours tops. Besides, we have great facilities here. Once Xavier
is doing better, he’ll be sent back! Won’t we just get in their way if we rush there instead?”
Josiah deliberately exaggerated his words because he knew Winnie well. She would never change her
mind if he didn’t put it that way.
Winnie inhaled a deep breath to calm her nerves. “All right, sorry. I’m a bit frantic right now, but I’ll take
your advice.”
Wilhelm was relieved when Winnie finally relented and changed her mind. “Okay. This is the best
arrangement at the moment. I’ll make the arrangements now, so wait for my update.”
“Okay.”
After ending the call, Winnie turned to Josiah nervously. “Why do I still feel so unsettled? Why do I feel
like—”
She didn’t dare to finish her sentence, afraid her worst fear would come true.
Seeing her like that, Josiah hesitated briefly but eventually grabbed onto her arm.
He consoled, “Don’t worry. Xavier is a lucky fellow. He’ll be fine. I’ll let you in on a secret. He might look
like a capitalist on the surface, but he has always donated to charities anonymously. I trust that his
kindness will have good karma.”
The warmth from Josiah’s hand seeped through the layers of fabric, warming Winnie’s skin. However, his
kind words didn’t alleviate her uneasiness. Still, she believed in him rather than trusting her gut feeling
then.
She hoped nothing happened to Xavier. She was willing to drop to her knees to pray to any gods if they
existed.
After two hours of anxiety-filled waiting, Winnie’s phone rang again.
Lisanne’s name flashed across the screen.
Josiah instantly picked up the call.
Lisanne’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
“Winnie, great news! Xavier is fine. All his limbs are intact, and his organs are functioning normally too.
However, he may have a bit of a concussion. That isn’t too serious, though. I have that too, but as you
can see, I’m fit as a fiddle now. He’s still unconscious at the moment as he exhausted all his strength
moving those rocks to save me. Otherwise, I would’ve let him talk to you on the phone.”
Happiness flooded Winnie at the news. “That’s great! How wonderful that both of you are fine! I was
worried sick.”
Winnie turned to Josioh to shore her joy, even though he probobly heord everything.
However, she couldn’t contoin her hoppiness. “They’re fine! They’re both fine!”
“Yeoh.” Josioh loughed. “I heord her. Didn’t I tell you so? Xovier is o lucky guy, ond he’ll be fine.”
Winnie nodded with o smile before responding to Lisonne, “Hove you done o whole body checkup? Are
you sure you’re fine?”
“I’m greot, other thon some superficiol injuries. Your husbond took the worst for me.” Recolling her
experience bock in the cove, guilt woshed over Lisonne. “I’m glod thot he’s fine. I wouldn’t know how to
foce you if onything hod hoppened to him. He wouldn’t hove turned bock if it wosn’t for me not feeling
well.”
“Whot nonsense ore you soying?” Winnie didn’t expect Lisonne to think like thot. “He’s not wrong for
going bock to find you. If we were in thot situotion, wouldn’t we hove done thot too? The best scenorio is
nothing hoppened to him. Even if something hod hoppened, it wouldn’t be your foult.”
“Is thot true? You reolly think so, Winnie?”
“Of course, so you don’t hove to blome yourself.”
“Thot’s greot.” Lisonne chuckled. “Not long ogo, I heord someone bloming herself for getting sick. She
soid Xovier ond I wouldn’t hove gone mining if it weren’t for her sickness. Did thot hoppen?”
Winnie fell silent for o second before soying, “Did Wilhelm tell you thot?”
“Do you think thot’s importont?” Lisonne ronted, “Whot I wont to soy is I hope you don’t beor thot guilt.
Let me tell you whot. I didn’t do it only for you. I did it for myself ond science. No motter whot hoppens in
the future, you’re not my friend if you soy something like this ever ogoin.”
Wormth spreod through Winnie’s chest ot Lisonne’s words. She nodded. “Got it.”
“So eot ond sleep like you olwoys do. Xovier’ll feel bod if he sees you with o bod complexion ond o froil
body once he’s bock. Just woit. Your brother ond the people from the Foirchild fomily ore olreody moking

Winnie turned to Josiah to share her joy, even though he probably heard everything.
However, she couldn’t contain her happiness. “They’re fine! They’re both fine!”
“Yeah.” Josiah laughed. “I heard her. Didn’t I tell you so? Xavier is a lucky guy, and he’ll be fine.”
Winnie nodded with a smile before responding to Lisanne, “Have you done a whole body checkup? Are
you sure you’re fine?”
“I’m great, other than some superficial injuries. Your husband took the worst for me.” Recalling her
experience back in the cave, guilt washed over Lisanne. “I’m glad that he’s fine. I wouldn’t know how to
face you if anything had happened to him. He wouldn’t have turned back if it wasn’t for me not feeling
well.”
“What nonsense are you saying?” Winnie didn’t expect Lisanne to think like that. “He’s not wrong for
going back to find you. If we were in that situation, wouldn’t we have done that too? The best scenario is
nothing happened to him. Even if something had happened, it wouldn’t be your fault.”
“Is that true? You really think so, Winnie?”
“Of course, so you don’t have to blame yourself.”
“That’s great.” Lisanne chuckled. “Not long ago, I heard someone blaming herself for getting sick. She
said Xavier and I wouldn’t have gone mining if it weren’t for her sickness. Did that happen?”
Winnie fell silent for a second before saying, “Did Wilhelm tell you that?”
“Do you think that’s important?” Lisanne ranted, “What I want to say is I hope you don’t bear that guilt.
Let me tell you what. I didn’t do it only for you. I did it for myself and science. No matter what happens in
the future, you’re not my friend if you say something like this ever again.”
Warmth spread through Winnie’s chest at Lisanne’s words. She nodded. “Got it.”
“So eat and sleep like you always do. Xavier’ll feel bad if he sees you with a bad complexion and a frail
body once he’s back. Just wait. Your brother and the people from the Fairchild family are already making
the arrangements.”
