Chapter 24: Busy Day
The couple didn't like the fact that random people were entering their house, but they had no choice. Going against a group of Defenders would be stupid after all.
The group of them finally went in and looked through the entire house, taking nearly 10 minutes to do so.
Stanley looked under the bed, checked inside the closest, or in the pile of clothes that was on the chair. He opened cabinets that could be hiding someone and even checked the bushes at the back of the house.
He was surprised, not by what he was doing, but by what he was seeing. The 1st and 2nd quadrants were where the rich lived, so it was quite an experience for him to see what the inside of their houses looked like.
Unlike his house, the inside of the house wasn't brittle or even uneven. It looked like the walls had been covered with some even mud plaster. There was more furniture in this one house than there was in his entire house previously.
There were closets full of clothes, tables and stands in every room, and massive shelves full of books and whatnot. Even the toilet was wide and clean.
Stanley wondered if he could ever afford a place like this and if a place like this was even worth it in the first place.
After they were done thoroughly checking throughout the house, they finally left. Garry apologized for what had to be done and walked away.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe entire ordeal had taken the group about 20 minutes to complete. Noting down information took no more than 5 minutes, but searching through the entire house took quite a time, especially because they had to knock on walls and ground all over to make sure no one was hiding.
As they left, Stanley walked close to Garry and asked, "why didn't you test the woman's powers? She could've been lying."
"Why would we care?" Garry asked. "It's not like she's going to be sent to the farms anyway."
Stanley felt a little weird. "Why?" he asked.
"What do you mean why?" Garry asked. "Have you never realized that female Dulls don't have to go work on the farm?"
Stanley paused for a moment. "What?" he asked.
"Yeah," Garry said. "Females are usually weak, so they aren't allowed to join the defenders. At the same time, they don't have to go work on the farm either."
Stanley took a moment to take in this information. It was apparent to anyone that Defenders didn't take in females at all. There were females that worked closely with the Defenders, whether it be as cooks, cleaners, or tailors, but they were never the Defenders themselves.
That much he knew. However, how could it be that the female dulls weren't sent to the farm? After all, his mother was a Dull and she was on the farm. There were many other women on the farms too.
"That can't be true right?" Stanley asked. "There were so many women on the farm."
"Those are usually mothers, wives, or daughters. It's always the male that is sent to the farm and the females follow," Garry said.
"Is that true?" Stanley asked. "What if the man that was sent to the farm died? What would happen to the women?"
"I think I remember reading they are allowed to request to move away from the farm," Garry said. "But I don't think anyone knows this or even does this. After all, what is a Dull supposed to do in the town with no money after living their whole life on the farm?"
Stanley felt a little bad when he heard that. 'If we had money, if we had any money, mother could've left the farm,' he thought. "If she had then…'
He shook his head to get rid of the next thoughts that were popping up.
They arrived over at the next house where a family of 5 walked out and the process began all over.
Some houses were small, some were big. Some houses had few rooms, some had many. Some houses were empty with little places to hide, while some were filled to the brim and had to be checked all over.
The houses took somewhere between 20 to 30 minutes each to go through and in 3 hours after being on duty, Garry managed to gather information from exactly 10 houses.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThe next house they arrived at was one that was occupied by an older man and woman. They seemed to be in the late 60s and were living alone.
Garry started recording information about them as well and asked them for their powers as well. The old man had a simple wind manipulation power, while the old woman could strengthen any objects she touched.
Garry asked for a simple demonstration, and once the old couple showed it to him, he closed the book.
"Go do it quickly," Garry said and the group behind him walked into the house.
"Wh-what are you doing?" the old man seemed horrified.
"Please don't mind them, they are only going to search and see if they can—"
"There's someone here," one of the trainees immediately shouted. He clapped twice and his palm glowed brightly while also giving off a little heat.
The trainee pointed the light at a man that was hiding in the darkness in the corner of the room. The other trainees gathered and watched him as the man grumbled under his breath with a nasty look on his face.
"Oh, good. We finally found one," Garry said while walking in. He pulled out his sword that he was carrying and pointed at the man. "Please don't do anything that would incriminate you more than you already have."
The man was about to talk back when the old man and woman quickly walked in. "P-please, don't hurt my son," the woman said. "Please, he's the only one that can take care of us. Please don't take him away."
Garry looked at the old couple and sighed. "Fine," he said and looked at the man. "Come out, you need to give us your information too."
