Chapter 253
Even Bailey sat up at her friend's words.
She sensed that Veronique was trembling and instinctively took the latter's hand. “No matter what the
results are, we will face it together. Promise me you won't shut yourself out,” she whispered.
Justin's voice sounded from the other end once more.
“I'm sorry. The results showed that we're not a match.”
Veronique shuddered as the last trace of her hope shattered. Despair flashed across her pale face. Her
phone slipped from her limp fingers and fell onto the sheet.
Not a match! How could it be? Even the child's father could not save him. Has God never even
considered giving Zephyr a chance?
“Hello, Veronique? Are you still there? Hello?”
Justin's urgent voice repeatedly called for her, but Veronique sat stupefied on the bed and gazed
silently into the space before her. Her pitch-black pupils were unfocused.
Bailey sighed wordlessly and grabbed the phone from the sheets. “This is Bailey speaking,” she said.
“Vero is currently at my place, but she's not doing too well at the moment. You can tell me if you have
something to say to her, and I'll relay the message once she feels better.”
“She's over at your place? Oh, what a relief. Ms. Jefferson, please tell her that I will bring Zephyr's
bone profile to the Xuereb family in search of a match, and I will immediately contact her when I find
one. Don't let her sink into despair. There's still hope.”
“All right. I'm hanging up if there's nothing else.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAfter ending the call, Bailey reached out and hugged Veronique. “If we can't find a match, we'll acquire
Justin's sperm and make a test tube baby and use the newborn baby's cord blood to rescue Zephyr in
seven months.”
Bailey spoke those words with fierce conviction. It was evident that she had made up her mind.
Veronique regained her clarity from the shock and nodded stiffly. “All right. I'll do as you say,” she
whispered.
Glen was propped against the headboard in his bedroom at the Chivers residence and having
breakfast as Artemis stood with his head bowed at the other end of the bed. The atmosphere within the
room was stagnant.
After a bout of silence, Glen spoke. “Do you know why I've summoned you here so early in the
morning?”
Artemis did not look up. “Your motives are too profound for me to fathom, Granddad. Please enlighten
me,” he murmured.
Glen grunted in disdain. “Let me ask you something. Did you order the fireworks to be released around
Disneyland last night?”
Artemis' eyes flashed. Even the air in his immediate vicinity seemed to have solidified. “It was only a
fireworks show. Why does it bother you so, Granddad?”
“Hallsbay has not had a fireworks show in years. I paid the mayor a visit yesterday and brought the
issue up with him. He agreed that city life was too oppressive and a fireworks show ought to lighten the
mood.”
Glen waved his hand impatiently. “Enough. If you intend on beating around the bush, this conversation
will never end. We've known each other for too long to be doing this. Speak freely. Have you fallen for
the girl of the Jefferson family?”
Artemis failed to stifle a laugh.
This old man gets straight to the point.
After a moment's silence, he responded with a question of his own. “Am I not allowed to have feelings
for Ms. Jefferson, Granddad?”
Glen straightened up to glare at his grandson. “If it were any other woman. I would not stop you even if
she has no background or status to speak of. Bailey, however, is your brother's woman who has borne
him two children. Even if Simon refuses to marry her, it does not change the fact that she had given the
Luther family two children,” he said sanctimoniously.
“So what?” Artemis said coolly. “She's not legally Simon's wife, and I will marry her if I so wish. Aren't
you fond of Bailey, Granddad? It should please you if I married her and made her your granddaughter-
in-law.”
“You're crazy!” Glen shouted as he leaped out of bed and brandished a furious forefinger at the
younger man. “The family spared no expense to groom you. How could you destroy your future for a
woman? As fond as I am of Bay, you are definitely not the person to marry her. Do you wish to utterly
destroy your reputation by coveting your brother's woman?”
Artemis looked up slowly and smiled at Glen. “She's more important to me than the entire world,” he
said, enunciating each word carefully. “I don't care about offending the entire world for her. I'm making
my intentions clear today, Granddad, by showing you how strong my resolve is to marry Bailey. Even
you and Dad combined cannot sway my decision.”
At that, he bowed deeply before Glen and turned to walk toward the door.
Glen trembled all over with rage. “I can't stop you from destroying yourself,” he shouted at his back,
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“but I will not sit and watch you destroy Bay! A woman with two husbands, who are biological brothers
at that. Once word gets out, she will drown in the contempt of the world.”
The only response he received was the clicking of loafers on floorboards.
Isn't the boy usually abstinent? How did he become this madly stubborn once he fell in love?
Meanwhile, a young woman was seated near the window of her private room on the second floor of a
café. She cast frequent glances at her watch and then up at the shut sliding door. Her brows were
furrowed with anxiety.
Minutes later, the door slid open to admit a mature-looking man clad in a black trench coat.
Scarlett sighed with relief at the newcomer's arrival and stood up to receive him. “You're finally here,
Raiden.”
“Why did you summon me so urgently from Jadeborough to Hallsbay?” he asked with a frown. “What
trouble have you gotten into this time?”
“Raiden,” Scarlett whined as she clung to her brother's arm. “What sort of trouble would I get into? It's
Justin. Something happened to him.”
Raiden narrowed his eyes. “Don't tell me someone died on his table, and he's getting sued.”
Scarlett rolled her eyes speechlessly. “Your imagination is rich, Raiden. I wonder if you would be able to
accept it if I told you that Justin has an illegitimate child?”
Raiden's countenance darkened after he regained his composure. A gust of rage rose in his hawklike
eyes. “What did you say? Justin has not even married you yet, and he's already messing around and
fathered an illegitimate child?”
The air around them instantly became stagnant.
“It wasn't Justin's fault,” Scarlett explained hastily. “That woman took advantage of Justin when he was
unconscious and gave birth to their son behind his back. The reason I summoned you here, Raiden, is
to discuss how we're going to deal with that woman and her son. Should we spare them, or should we
dispose of them?”
