Chapter 340
Back at the medical base, Bailey was feeding Maxton some oatmeal in his ward.
It was then that the phone by the bed rang.
Before she could react, Maxton—one step ahead of her—had already scooped it up.
“Bay, it's Daddy Eddy.”
The hand Bailey was holding the spoon with trembled slightly.
Edmund... I don't know how to face him. Even though I promised him to leave Hallsbay to start a new
life with him, I chose to return in the end. I'm sure he's aware of my feelings for Artemis given how
smart he is.
It was for that reason she didn't know how to break it to him.
After a brief hesitation, she put down the bowl and took the phone from Maxton's hand.
She then walked to the balcony and answered in a raspy voice. “Edmund, I—”
Before she could finish, Edmund interrupted her. “I heard Max was bitten by a cobra. Has the venom
been neutralized?”
Bailey sighed inwardly with her head hung low.
Edmund, oh Edmund, there are just some matters we can't resolve by avoiding them. If you don't dare
face it, wouldn't I be holding you back for the rest of your life?
“Edmund, there's something I need to tell you.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAs tension filled the air, Edmund's slightly hoarse voice rang out after a momentary pause. “I know
what you want to say. It's all right. What matters now is Maxton. Since you didn't succeed in leaving this
time, we'll think of another way. You should go back to whatever you're doing as I've still got something
to deal with. Bye.”
“Ed—”
Bailey opened her mouth, but Edmund didn't give her the opportunity to say anything further.
The call-end tone ringing in her ears elicited a wry smile from her.
Edmund has probably guessed what I wanted to say. He has just chosen to avoid the topic due to his
fear of confronting it. My spurning of his feelings has truly scarred him. Such an exceptional man is now
reduced to a wary presence in front of me.
Suddenly, footsteps were heard from behind before she felt a heavy weight on her shoulder.
Artemis' voice rang out from beside her ear. “If you can't bring yourself to talk to him, let me do it.”
“No,” Bailey stopped him without hesitation. “You'll only end up causing him more hurt. Artemis, you
should be thanking him instead. If he hadn't saved us back then, the children and I would have died on
the streets.”
Artemis' gaze darkened, for he knew Bailey's words were not an exaggeration at all.
Back then, Rhonda—after taking Maxton for herself—had ordered Bailey and the other children to be
killed.
Therefore, their survival was a miracle in itself.
“All right. I'll remember the debt of gratitude we owe him. Going forward, I'll find him a wonderful wife.”
Bailey rolled her eyes in response. “You better hold back on that thought.”
Chuckling to himself, Artemis wrapped his hands around her waist and pulled her into his embrace.
“Bay, will you be by my side for the rest of our lives?”
With her eyes narrowed, she threw a different question back at him. “Do you plan to announce the
children's real background?”
“Yeah...” Artemis grunted as he nuzzled her neck.
Sensing the inadequacy of his response, he added, “That said, I still need to take into account your
opinion. If you want me to announce it, I'll do it. If not, I won't dare make a unilateral decision.”
Bailey couldn't resist bursting into laughter. With a raised brow, she asked, “Are you afraid of your
wife?”
The mention of the word “wife” delighted Artemis.
If she's my wife, I don't mind being afraid of her at all.
“Mmm-hmm, I am. From now on, I might be the head of the household, but you wear the pants in the
house.”
After she let out a chuckle, a grim expression descended upon Bailey's face when something came to
mind.
Noticing the change in her mood, Artemis probed, “Shall we go and see Rhonda?”
Bailey was briefly stunned.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmWhen she regained her senses, a smile broke out across her face.
He can really read my mind. I'm indeed planning to see Rhonda.
“Where is she now?”
“The Luther residence.”
After a momentary pause, he added, “If you don't feel like going there, I can order Ken to bring her
here.”
Bailey was indeed reluctant to go, for every time she was there, she would bear the brunt of Felicity's
resentment.
“Okay, get Ken to bring her here then.”
In the afternoon, another scandal exploded on the internet.
Someone in the know revealed that Victoria's mysterious sugar daddy was none other than Lionel,
whose Gezmond Group was taken over by Saunders Group seven years ago.
The fallen scion of the Gezmond family had made a comeback and returned to Hallsbay in a position of
power. Soon after, he swiftly took down Saunders Group and became its largest shareholder.
Just when everyone assumed the bad blood between the two families would end with the change in
ownership of Saunders Group, the indignant daughter of the Saunders family seduced Lionel, hoping to
use her body to wrest back control of Saunders Group.
Once the news broke, an anonymous source published a few photographs.
The background was of a seaside mansion where Victoria stayed, and the man—whose face could
clearly be seen—was none other than Lionel, head of LG Corporation.
With a picture as evidence, the entire internet went into an uproar, filled with ridicule and accusations.
Just as Rose had predicted, no one accused Lionel of cheating. Instead, all the disparagement was
concentrated on Victoria.
