Chapter 701 Mortal Enemy
Sebastian got to his feet.
After a moment of silence, he uttered, “If you can help me solve my parents' matters, I will pledge my loyalty to
you for the rest of my life.”
Zayron slowly stood up and narrowed his eyes at the young man. “Do you mean that?”
Sebastian lowered his head slightly before bowing to Zayron and saying, “Mr. Zayron.”
Zayron arched a brow as something flickered through his gaze.
Eventually, he said, “I won't resort to such tactics to enforce your loyalty. One day, I will use my own talents to
prove to you that pledging your loyalty to me is the right decision.”
“Of course.”
Zayron summoned the young man, “Come closer.”
Once Sebastian was right next to him, Zayron whispered his advice to him. Sebastian frowned and commented,
“That's one devious plan. But I must admit, it's definitely made for a man. Right, let's do it, then.”
At the same time, two nurses were blocking the entrance to an ICU ward.
Opposite them stood a distressed Lindsey, who wailed, “I heard Eddy was badly injured, so I rushed home from
abroad. Can't you let me in, please? I just want to check on him and make sure he's okay.”
One of the female nurses shook her head and insisted, “We cannot allow anyone into the ward without Ms.
Jefferson's express orders, Ms. Carter. Please seek Ms. Jefferson's approval if you would like to visit Mr. Edmund.”
Lindsey stomped her foot indignantly and demanded through gritted teeth, “Where is Bailey?”
“She should be in the study.”
“And where is that?”
“Turn left once you reach the third floor.”
Lindsey turned and ran after the nurse's instructions. She shouted, “Fine. I'll bring Bailey here. Let's see if you'll still
stop me then.”
Meanwhile, Bailey rested on a couch in said study. Her gaze was affixed to a young man who stood near the floor-

She asked him, “Are you sure you're all set for this? Why don't you wait a few more years? You're still very young,
yet you refuse to let me help. I'm worried you'll struggle with executing your rather hasty plan for revenge.”
Veikko did not turn around and continued observing the evening scenery outside the window. An inexplicable
emotion flitted across his gaze.
He exuded an extremely frosty aura that put off anyone from approaching him.
Veikko finally spoke up moments later. “I've laid low for far too long for this day. Why does he deserve to enjoy the
power and glory of being the patriarch of the Carter family while I have to languish in darkness? This plan might
ruin my life forever, but I would gladly drag them down to h*ll with me.”
Bailey knew advising him against his plan was futile.
His hatred for the Carter family was too deep, and she knew how much he had suffered in the past because of
them.
Nothing she said or did could help him with that.
The only way to appease his hatred is to let him carry out his plan.
With that in mind, Bailey cautioned, “Fine, I won't stop you, but at least make sure you've nursed yourself to full
health.”
“I'm fine. I just need to rest for a few days...”
He trailed off and swallowed the rest of his words when Bailey shot him a sharp glance.
“You're fine? Just look at yourself. I'm a patient, and you probably can't even defeat me now. If you're so eager to
die, I could stick a knife through you instead. Saves me the trouble of fishing your dead body out of the enemies'
hands.”
Before Bailey could chastise him further, one of her subordinates announced outside the door, “Ms. Jefferson, the
Carter family's eldest daughter, Lindsey Carter, would like to see you. May I let her in?”
Lindsey Carter? What's she doing here? Oh right. She likes Edmund. She's probably here to see him after hearing
that he's injured.
“Let—”
Bailey cut herself off when she sensed the atmosphere in the room chilling by several degrees. A murderous aura
rapidly filled the room, emanating from the direction of the floor-length window.
She stiffened in realization.
Lindsey? The Carter family's heiress and eldest daughter? D*mn it, how could I forget such an important thing?
She's...
Bailey instinctively glanced in the direction of the floor-length window. Veikko's body was as tense as a bowstring.
Her eyelids twitched from a sense of foreboding.
“L-Let her wait outside. I'll—”
The door to the study was abruptly opened from the outside. Lindsey dashed into the room.
She whined, “Bailey, please go to the ICU ward with me. I want to see Eddy. I need to know how he's doing.”
Bailey quickly stood up, but the suddenness of the motion made her dizzy, causing her to fall back into the couch.
She watched as Veikko slowly turned around and shoot Lindsey a murderous glare. Her heart sank.
“Wait for me outside, Lindsey. I'll be right there,” Bailey ordered.
The words had barely left her lips when Veikko asked, “You're the eldest daughter of the Carter family? Who's
Sloane Carter to you?”
Lindsey froze in her steps and returned Veikko's stare.
Her legs trembled involuntarily under the weight of his menacing glare. She stammered in reply, “H-He's my eldest
brother.”
Veikko took a step forward, overwhelmed with the urge to kill.
Bailey forgot all about her dizziness and clambered to her feet, using her body to shield Lindsey.
“Bailey, w-who is he? Why is he so hostile toward me?” Lindsey asked fearfully.
Bailey sighed to herself in response.
Who is he? He's your mortal enemy!
She swiftly averted the topic and asked, “You want to see Edmund, don't you, Lindsey?”

“Okay. Why don't you go out and wait for me? I've got a couple of things to settle here, and then I'll bring you to see
Edmund.”
“B-But—”
“No buts.” Bailey raised her voice, cutting off Lindsey's protests. She continued firmly, “I told you to go out, so that's
that. Don't argue with me. Hurry up.”
Fear swelled in Lindsey's chest when she recalled Veikko's murderous gaze.
She only stalled for several seconds before slowly backing out of the room.
Veikko was still advancing toward Lindsey, but by the time he reached Bailey, Lindsey had already left the study.
He was about to run past Bailey and give chase, but she seized his wrist with an iron grip, pulling him back.
Veikko spat, “You're going to stop me? You should know better; every single Carter deserves to die.”
His blind thirst for vengeance drew a resigned sigh from Bailey. She stared into his eyes and reminded him, “The
only people who sabotaged you and your mother were that woman and her son. None of the other Carters had
anything to do with this. I agree that everyone should reap what they sow, but don't end up with innocent blood on
your hands.”
“Innocent?” Veikko scoffed and barked, “That woman and her son are her mother and brother. How innocent can
she be? Bailey, you're smart enough to know what happens next. Once her mother and brother die at my hands, I
will become her mortal enemy. This revenge will only end when one of us is dead. That's why I have to kill her in the
end. I won't spare the lives of anyone from the Carter family. I won't.”
Bailey had no idea how to respond to his reasoning.
He's right, though. How can one's family be unscathed by one's misfortune? Their enmity will only drag on if
Lindsey's family dies at Veikko's hands.
Nonetheless, Bailey warned, “Worry about that in the future. You can't kill her today, and that's final. She's already
considered my guest the minute she set foot in this medical base.”
Veikko sneered and replied, “Fine. I'll wait. You're clearly protective of that young lady. I can only hope our
relationship will hold strong against all challenges. You should know; nothing you do will dissuade me from my plan.”
