The elders in the family always had their fair share of superstitions, and digging up a grave was certainly a matter that would make anyone's skin crawl. The Stirling family had thrived for generations, all due to the good deeds of their ancestors and the blessings bestowed upon them from the heavens. Sheryl couldn't be allowed to bring such a dark cloud over their household.
Aunt Ethel turned her anxious gaze towards Aurelia, "My dear, this is a dire situation, and you need to get someone to cleanse this mess right away. We need a service for Joyce, and we can't have this affecting the Stirling family fortune." "Don't worry, Aunt Ethel," Aurelia assured her, "As soon as | heard about it, | went straight to Grace Lutheran Chapel and had the reverend perform the necessary rites." Aunt Ethel patted her chest in relief, "Good. Perhaps we should have a few more services, just to be safe." "Of course," Aurelia nodded.
Sheryl slumped in her chair like a deflated balloon.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe couldn't shake the feeling that Joyce's spirit hadn't left, and it seemed to have intensified, leading to her betrayal by Aurelia at the family meeting.
The conference room had emptied, leaving only Lisbeth by Sheryl's side, not quite ready to leave.
"Sheryl, you're young, and you can start over," Lisbeth said, trying to offer scomfort.
Sheryl clenched her jaw, her nerves frayed, "It's Joyce. She's haunting me. Even in death, she's clinging to me." Lisbeth whispered, "Did you know that Aurelia knew Joyce?" Sheryl blinked in surprise, "What do you mean? How could they have known each other?" "Joyce had a close friend in college, Jelena, who happens to be Aurelia's cousin," Lisbeth revealed.
A shockwave ran through Sheryl.
"Are you saying that those two conspired againstbecause of Joyce?" Lisbeth quickly waved her hands dismissively, "Don't jump to conclusions. | didn't say that." But her words were meaningful. Sheryl couldn't help but suspect it now.
She rushed out of the conference room to find Fredric.
At that moment, Fredric was gleefully texting Jelena the news of his impending divorce.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmSheryl stormed over and grabbed him, "Fredric, do you know Jelena was Joyce's friend at college? They were close. She must be seducing you on purpose, stirring trouble to get back at us for Joyce, and Aurelia's in on it. Don't fall for their tricks." Fredric shook her off with disgust, "Stop your nonsense. We're finalizing the divorce this afternoon." "Whether or not I'm talking rubbish, you can find out yourself," Sheryl retorted.
Fredric snorted, "That you could do something so vile to Joyce is truly horrifying." Anger flared in Sheryl, "Joyce's death wasn't solely my fault. You're just as responsible for her death. If Jelena is really out for revenge, do you think you'll be spared?" Fredric's mouth tightened.
"What happens between Jelena andis my business, and it's no longer any of your concern." With that, he walked away. But Sheryl was not one to give up. She decided to confront Aurelia.
In the meantime, Aurelia was in the garden with Beverley.
Beverley wasn't a member of the family council, so she hadn't attended the meeting, but she had been waiting outside for its outcome.
"Aurelia, Sheryl desecrated Joyce's grave, such a grave matter, and why didn't you tell me?" Beverley inquired.
"How could | speak of such a heartless act?" Aurelia sighed, "We hoped she'd genuinely repent, to settle this feud, but she just had to make it worse." Beverley clicked her tongue, "We warned her, but she didn't listen. I've heard that desecrating a grave can curse descendants. | hope she doesn't bring that upon Nina and Mira." "I've already arranged for the memorial service," Aurelia stated, "We'll select a few more dates for additional ceremonies. It should keep any misfortune at bay."
