Beverley mused, "Sfolks reckon ghosts are just blurry shadows, sort of human-shaped but faceless, like a special kind of energy field." "Like brainwaves?" Nina chimed in, her voice laced with a mix of curiosity and trepidation. She had snuck a peek at shorror that suggested ghosts were peculiar brainwaves.
"Yeah, there's a bunch of people who believe that souls are brainwaves. When the body kicks the bucket, these brainwaves leave the body, float around in nature, and becwhat we call spirits. If someone's brainwaves happen to collide with these floating brainwaves, that person might just get a glimpse of a ghost." "Wow, that's freaky cool," Nina said, pulling a silly face. "So ghosts aren't all that scary. They're just brainwaves and can’t physically harm us." Mira shivered, "Brainwaves or not, they givethe heebie-jeebies. | sure as heck don't want to bump into sbrainwaves." As Mira spoke, a thought struck her, and she gasped, covering her mouth, "Oh no, Nova saw a ghost earlier. She must've been hit by one of those wandering brainwaves. What if she gets sick?" Aurelia rummaged through her purse and pulled out a lipstick, proceeding to draw a tiny red dot between Nova's eyebrows.

It was an old family trick to ward off bad spirits." Mira hurried over, tugging at her sleeve, "Auntie Aurelia, do one fortoo, please." "Sure," Aurelia obliged, drawing a dot for Mira as well. Nina stood by, hesitant, but then stepped forward. "Maybe | should get one too." Nina remembered that recently two people had died after eating the chocolates she had given them. If they turned into vengeful ghosts and cafter her, that would be a disaster. Aurelia gave Nina a red dot too.
William made a ghost face. "Boys aren't scared of ghosts." "Right," Skyler nodded vigorously. "I'm brave as can be. I'll protect you all." Aurelia chuckled, "Let's head out to Snowy Summit Retreat. It'll be a blast." They could go skiing there and build snowmen.
On their way to Snowy Summit Retreat, Nina pulled Aurelia aside.
"Auntie Aurelia, do you think those two people who were poisoned by the chocolates could becghosts?" Aurelia could see the shadow of this event had cast on young Nina.
She wrapped an arm around Nina's shoulder. "Trouble finds its kind. You didn't do them in. It was that imposter. Even if they did turn into restless spirits, they'd go after the real culprit, not you. You're a victim too." "Has the bad person been caught?" Nina asked.
"Not yet, but they will be. Don't worry, sweetheart, they won't get far," Aurelia reassured her.

Skyler’s playing Santa, right? Nova probably wanted to tell him about the little animal, that's all." "Ah, | get it now!" Nina's face lit up with realization and she skipped ahead, grinning ear to ear.
Aurelia sighed internally, resolving to keep a closer eye on Nina, to help her forget this dreadful ordeal.
The kids played at Snowy Summit Retreat until noon. It was freezing inside and their little cheeks were rosy from the cold.
Once outside, Aurelia bought each of them a cup of hot cider.
After a while, Arnold arrived. Nova, now more familiar with her dad, smiled joyfully at him and stretched out her arms for a cuddle.
Arnold lifted his daughter, planting a kiss on her chilled cheek.
Sipping her cider, Mira said, "Uncle Arnold, we had a scary discovery today. Nova saw a ghost." Arnold tensed slightly, "A ghost?" "Yup," Mira nodded solemnly. "They say only babies can see ghosts, the rest of us can't."
