Lisbeth turned her face the shade of a ghost, pale as a sheet of paper.
A touch of agony rose unbidden in her eyes.
She hastily ducked her head, sipping her coconut water, trying to cover the tidal emotions threatening to spill over.
Aurelia, with a keen eye, noticed the shift in her demeanor.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtHer feelings for Raines must be real. Otherwise, she wouldn't have such a heartbroken response.
She was Raines' personal assistant and probably knew him as well as anyone could, second only to his mother. If Raines were an imposter, Lisbeth would've noticed... wouldn't she? “Or am | just being paranoid, jumping at shadows?” Aurelia thought.
Sheryl patted Lisbeth's shoulder, "Hey, don't take it to heart. The future's always changing. It's not something you can predict with a few cards." "You're right, Sheryl," Aurelia nodded in agreement, trying to console her, "Who knows? Tomorrow the cards might show a complete turnaround." Beverley pulled a face. Tarot readings had a knack for coming true, and she'd seen it happen with Aurelia.
But Lisbeth's reading was just too freaky. All bad cards without a single good omen. It was like a sign of life-altering doom.
She figured it was better to keep her mouth shut. No point in freaking Lisbeth out even more.
Lisbeth forced a smile, the corners of her mouth tight, "I've never believed in fortune-telling or anything. It's all just a game." Sheryl chuckled, "Exactly, it's all in good fun. Something to pass the time, but don't let it mess with your head." Aurelia took a casual sip of her coconut water and asked nonchalantly, "How long have you and Raines known each other, Lisbeth?" "About four years," Lisbeth murmured, "I got the job after his last assistant left." Aurelia quirked up her brows.
Four years as a personal assistant, she should know Raines inside out. You'd notice if someone close to you was switched out, right? A person's face might be impersonated, but personality is a whole other ball game. Over time, cracks would show.
Unless Raines was replaced four years ago.
"So, it's a classic case of falling for each other over time, huh?" Lisbeth drifted her eyes to the horizon, where the sea kissed the sky, a soft smile blossoming on her lips as if lost in fond memories.
"He loved my apple turnover the most. I'd bake it for him every day. He'd get grumpy if he went a day without it. He's got a terrible memory, but he'd jot down everything aboutin a notebook, so he'd never forget." "Wow!" Beverley giggled, "You two sound super sweet on each other." Aurelia flicked her hair back, recalling Skyler mentioning that Geoffrey couldn't stand the smell of apples, almost to the point of sickness. But Raines loved the stuff, especially apple-flavored treats, which meant the man by Lisbeth's side had to be Raines. No one would eat apple-flavored treats every day just to torture themselves.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmYesterday, she'd seen Raines enjoying an apple turnover like it was his favorite in the world. Still, if someone was trying to pass themselves off as someone else without being caught, they'd have to change their habits to match and avoid getting busted.
"Sheryl, when you have a moment, you can find a good date for Raines and Lisbeth's wedding? Maybe get a pastor to bless the day," Aurelia suggested.
"Sure," Sheryl nodded, "Apart from Fredric and me, it seems like none of you guys have had a proper wedding. It's high tfor a grand celebration." Beverley sighed. The one with the rockiest love life in the family was Arnold. He and Leopold had fallen for the swoman. It was inevitable one of them would end up heartbroken.
Now that Leopold and Aurelia had renewed their vows, Arnold would be devastated when he found out.
"lI wonder when Arnold's coming back?" "He should be back next week," Aurelia whispered.
"Is it true Arnold's planning on divorcing Lisa when he gets back?" Sheryl asked with a hint of gossip in her voice.
