Everett was practically studying her name. His gaze was deepening, and an indescribable feeling was stirring within him.
Just as he'd resolved to let go, fate had orchestrated another encounter with her.
What did it mean? "Mr. Lopez? Would you like me to further investigate Ms. Sanchez's activities over these past years?" Kevin asked cautiously.
He couldn't figure out what Everett was thinking, and he dared not guess. After all, Ms. Sanchez was a sensitive topic for him.
"No need." Everett paused for a few seconds before adding, "Not for now." He needed to think clearly about what he should do and what he truly wanted.
After hanging up the phone, Everett poured himself a glass of red wine, then strode towards the floor-to-ceiling windows of his hotel room.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThe small town was very quiet at night, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the big city.
Everett took a sip of his wine. The tart taste washed over his palate and trickled down his throat as he slowly lost himself in thought.
The breeze wafting through the window brought him to his senses.
Reason dictated that, since he had made up his mind to give up Dorothy, he shouldn't change his mind so easily.
Seeing Dorothy again was a test of his resolve.
That was right. This was just a test.
Feeling that the wind wasn't strong enough to clear his mind, Everett set down his wine glass, threw on a random jacket, and left his room.
Down on the hotel's ground floor, the night wind blew stronger due to the absence of pedestrians and vehicles. The tall trees on either side of the road didn't provide much shelter, making the wind feel even more powerful.
Powerful enough to bring him some answers.
Everett stood there on the road in front of the hotel. His tall figure seemed somewhat lonely as his jacket flapped in the wind, like it was trying to break free.
Suddenly, he heard footsteps approaching.
Everett instinctively looked toward the sound. It was the little girl with eyes like Dorothy's.
She was dressed in a blue puff dress and also staying at the Dreamscape Hotel.
But why was she out alone so late at night? Everett hesitated, then decided to approach her. He squatted down in front of her and asked, "Hey kiddo, where are your parents?" Abigail was clearly startled.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmShe quickly extended her chubby little hand, signaling for Everett to be quiet.
"I don't have a Daddy, and Mommy's working. She's very busy and can't play with me, so | came down to play by myself. You mustn't tell my mommy." No Daddy? That phrase could easily make one think of unhappy circumstances.
Everett's lips twitched, and on an impulse, he reached out to pat Abigail's head. "Okay, | won't tell. But you can't leave the hotel; otherwise, your mommy will worry if she can't find you." Abigail pouted and blinked her big, beautiful eyes, making her look all the more pitiful. "Ah? But | want to buy candy! | can leave the hotel!" As she spoke, she took out a five-dollar bill and waved it a little.
Her aunt Karen had given her the money as a reward, telling her she could buy candy with it, which Abigail remembered vividly.
When Aunt Karen fell asleep while her mommy was still busy working, she snuck out with the money.
But now this strange man was not letting her leave the hotel.
That won't do! Everett was amused.
Typical of a child, her sentences were disorganized and incoherent. But she was just too adorable.
Her pleading eyes made it impossible for Everett to say no to her.
"Alright then, I'll take you back to your hotel room and ask your mommy. If she agrees, | can take you to buy candy."
