“I’ve even hurt myself. Please forgive me, Darling,” pleaded Cedrick in a soft voice.
Not bothered about the dirt on Gwendolyn’s body, he pulled her into his embrace.
He even wished he could envelop her body in his own so they would forever be inseparable.
Being able to embrace her warm body and listen to her heartbeat, Cedrick gradually regained his composure.
Gwendolyn sighed. Wrapping her arms around the man’s waist, she deeply inhaled the reassuring scent of his body.
On the ground, Hamish was yelling away and making a fuss, almost like a pig waiting to be slaughtered. It took
Jasper much effort to tie him up.
He then lifted his head and saw the couple cuddling each other tightly a distance away. As much as he did not want
to ruin the atmosphere, he had no choice but to do so. “Mr. Jenson…”
Cedrick let go of Gwendolyn and held her hand as they walked over. His gaze grew sharp at once as it landed on
Hamish.
He bent down, drew out his gun, and pointed it at Hamish’s chin. “You used the milk powder contamination incident
to harm the wealthy families’ babies. What exactly is your motive?”
Hamish refused to answer no matter what. A brief moment later, he seemingly fell into a daze, and his gaze
gradually turned unfocused.
“This is bad!” Jasper hastily pried open his mouth to take a look. “He must’ve taken poison when he screamed so
wildly just now. Should we send him to the hospital immediately for emergency treatment?”
Cedrick shook his head. “By the way he looks, it must be a deadly poison. That’s typical of what the underworld
gangs would do, especially to higher-ups who hold top secrets. There’s no way to revive him.”
The other bodyguards of Hamish, who were not too far away, were all seized. But since they were only but lackeys,
Cedrick figured he would not get a single shred of information from them.
The man swept his gaze across the faces of those bodyguards, and upon sensing something amiss, he uttered,
“Where’s the head of the bodyguard who always turns up for negotiations? Why isn’t he around?”
Realization dawned on Channing. “Quintrell? He’s in the house. He was still trying to resist when the fight broke out
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtearlier, so my subordinate knocked him unconscious.”
Cedrick strode into the house and flipped the black-suited bodyguard, who was lying unconsciously on the ground,
over to take a look.
After removing that bodyguard’s shades, he looked closely at him and uttered in a solemn tone, “This guy isn’t
Quintrell.”
Those words took Channing aback. “How is that possible? Mr. Jenson, he’s only but a mere bodyguard. Why don’t
we put the word out there that Mr. Wendell is still alive and capture a few more useful people to get more scoop?”
Cedrick shook his head. For some reason, he felt that something was off.
According to the investigation report Swain gave me last night, Quintrell is the most skilled among Mr. Wendell’s
bodyguards and holds a high status. His whereabouts are often unpredictable and untraceable.
He searched the body, who he believed was obviously Quintrell’s substitute. Then, he glanced at the chubby Hamish
lying outside the house. The puzzlement within him grew exponentially.
Cedrick’s hunch told him there had to be more to the matter than meets the eye.
Even a bodyguard has a fall guy, yet Mr. Wendell is dead just like that? Judging from what happened earlier, Mr.
Wendell is poles apart from his rumored cold-blooded image. On the other hand, this head of bodyguard seems
more like that.
Cedrick searched the deceased’s pockets and felt something with defined edges. It turned out to be a neatly folded
piece of paper.
He was about to pull it out of the pocket when he furrowed his brows and raised his head. “Mr. Kron, you should
know the rules well since you’re from the underworld too, like Mr. Wendell. I’m sure it’s easier for you to do certain
things. Since there’s nothing much here, why don’t you go and help my subordinates?”
Channing dared not disobey Cedrick’s order. After all, he even had to behave adequately in front of any of the
Federal Bureau of Investigation’s members, let alone Cedrick.
Afraid he would be held accountable for his inefficiency, Channing quickly nodded in servility. “I’ll go right away!”
Soon, the room fell back into silence.
After Channing’s departure, Cedrick took out the square-shaped object. Upon opening it, he realized it was a note.
The piece of paper was clean and neatly folded, forming a stark contrast with the chaotic scene. It was clear that
was something prepared in advance.
What goes around, comes around. Your tactics are bizarre, like always. But this time, you’ll definitely be defeated at
the hands of mine. —Joe Landon
Joe, pseudonym Hamish Wendell.
A familiar yet devilish face emerged before Cedrick’s eyes.
Staring at that familiar handwriting and name on the note, Cedrick descended into deep thought. The memories he
had sealed for a long time were gradually awakened.
Cedrick and Joe used to be one of the best figures in the military but belonged to different war zones.
During a joint exercise, Joe took the opportunity to declare his doubts about Cedrick attaining the title of the king of
the military and thus called for a showdown.
Cedrick readily agreed. The two competed in all aspects, including agility, knowledge, and group combat skills.
Unfortunately, Cedrick outdid Joe in the final results.
As someone who had always been arrogant and self-proclaimed that he was outstandingly talented, Joe was
unwilling to admit defeat. As such, he continuously called for more challenges and battles.
The two eventually grew closer to each other after many rounds of showdown. They later worked together and
became comrades, and that caused a temporary sensation.
However, the fire in Horington afterward changed everything.
Foreign rebels disguised themselves among the citizens and caused chaos, resulting in bloodshed everywhere.
Cedrick and Joe fought separately, but Cedrick learned of the devastating news shortly after—a fire broke out at the
battlefield where Joe was fighting.
He hurried to the scene without further delay, but all that was left was ashes and a raging fire.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmSubsequently, Joe’s name was never mentioned again.
Judging from the familiar tone in this note and the handwriting that I remember…
Cedrick was certain that it was him.
“Hubby, did you find anything?”
As Gwendolyn stepped into the house, a faint scent of disinfectant permeated the air.
After the accompanying doctor arrived a moment ago, she cleaned herself with the cleaning tools. Her complexion
was now smooth and bright, and having changed into fresh clothes, she regained her usual attractiveness.
“Channing’s men are searching through the bodies outside. Hamish’s body is in a terrible condition after being
rummaged by them. It’s truly…”
Her brows scrunched together as she spoke. She could not help but retch at the thought of the horrid sight.
Cedrick had his right hand clenched into a fist. Upon sensing her approaching footsteps, he hid the note away.
He got up slowly and walked over to caress her face. He grabbed her hand and headed out of the house. “Where’s
Neville and Swain? Have they not wrapped up? Ask them to come and see me,” said the man to the police officer at
the side after taking a deep breath.
The empty ground lay full of unconscious casualties. Some, who had to be taken care of on the spot, had already
been given a thorough body search. It was easy to tell that it was the work of Channing’s subordinates.
At the sight of Cedrick, Channing rushed over to claim credit with a solemn expression.
“Mr. Jenson, my men and I have done our best. Hamish is an extremely cunning man. There’s no useful information
on his body at all. We’ve combed through every corner of his stronghold, but there’s also nothing. It seems that his
men have all run for their lives after the death of their boss.”
Right then, Swain also came over to report his findings.
“Boss, all the people lying in ambush on the mountain have been found. There’s a total of one hundred and thirty of
them. We’ve sent them back for custody. Also, we’ve found five hidden skilled assassins. They sustained severe
injuries while fleeing but no one’s in danger. What should we do next?”
Cedrick nodded. “Good. You’ll be in charge of this matter, then. Go back and continue with the investigations. Also,
proceed with the search for the fugitives on the name list. Where’s Neville?”
