Brandon also glanced her way.
The tender focus in his eyes made Sophia feel a bit squirmy, and she couldn't help but shift her gaze away a smidge.
"I didn't mistake you for someone else," Brandon finally broke the silence, his voice deep and gentle, "Sophia, even if I got the whole world wrong, there's no way I'd misidentify you." Sophia's attempt at a smile kind of froze on her face.
"Oh, is that so..." she tried to pick her words carefully, "I kind of thought that between husband and wife... even with memory gone, there'd still be this natural vibe of affection." She looked up at him with a sheepish grin: "But with you, it feels like I just can't warm up to you..." Brandon managed a strained chuckle too: "Maybe it's because we've had our share of... let's say, not-so-great moments.' "What... kind of moments?" Sophia asked, puzzled, her wide eyes showing a hint of wanting to back away.
Her hesitation made Brandon's lips purse a bit tighter.
He hadn't figured out yet how to answer that question.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt|| From the moment he found out she was alive to discovering her memory loss, he hadn't had the luxury of tto think about how to explain their past to her.
Should he concoct a half-true fairytale about how lovey-dovey they used to be, or should he lay out the raw truth of their past? He hadn't made up his mind yet.
The overwhelming joy of having her back had temporarily robbed him of his ability to think straight.
He hadn't anticipated her amnesia.
That was a curveball he didn't seeing.
It was like facing a crossroad: to rebuild a pain-free past for her or to have her confront the reality of it. He hadn't had enough tto ponder the potential fallout of that choice and to weigh his options.
Sophia seemed to subconsciously want to dodge the question too.
She chuckled awkwardly, didn't press further, and her eyes wandered to the kettle on the table. She started to get up to pour swater.
Brandon gently stopped her.
"Letdo that." His soft voice trailed off as he turned around and poured her a warm cup of water.
"Thanks." Sophia instinctively mumbled her thanks, and after saying it, she paused, yet it felt oddly normal.
She couldn't help but sneak a peek at Brandon.
He half-closed his eyes and didn't speak, as if accustomed to this polite exchange.
It eased sof the pressure in l Sophia's chest, but she still couldn't find any topic to broach with this stranger who claimed to be her husband. So, she just held the Cup with both hands, sipping the water in tiny gulps. The memory of Brandon telling her about their 2-year-old daughter, just before she lost consciousness, popped into her mind.

"What's wrong?" Brandon asked softly.
Sophia shook her head slightly, but her eyes instinctively glanced behind him, searching, yet she saw no one else.
"I..." She wanted to ask what their et dawas like, but just thinking the word "daughter" made her throat feel like it was clogged, leaving her feeling choked up. Brandon noticed the shift in her emotions.
Like he used to, he instinctively et reached out to caress her cheek and head, but as his fingertips barely touched her forehead, Sophia recoiled as if shocked. The atmosphere in the room beca bit stiff.
"I'm... I'm sorry." Sophia blurted out an apology, "I..." She didn't know what to explain. That momentary flight might just be because he was still a stranger to her.
Brandon smiled gently at her: "It's okay." Then, he withdrew his hand that was left hanging in mid-air.
But Sophia felt inexplicably sadder, like she had unintentionally hurt him again.
"You..." she scrambled to make amends, "Could you tellabout us? What happened between us?" She looked at him apologetically: "I'm sorry, I really don't remember anything." Brandon simply smiled reassuringly: "It's okay, you'll slowly remember over time." Hisforting words soothed her a bit, and she nodded lightly.
"So, could you... givea rough idea of what we were like together?"
