Noticing that Brandon was sneakily checking her out, Sophia looked up, puzzled.
"What's up?" she asked.
Brandon just shook his head, "Nah, it's nothing." That short reply left Sophia kind of hanging, not really sure how to keep the conversation going.
She gave a polite smile, skirted around the foot of the bed, and headed to the inner side of the headboard, using tidying up the sheets as an excuse to mask her awkwardness.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtBrandon also moved around the foot of the bed, fussing with another corner on his side.
Sophia couldn't help but sneak a peek at Brandon's hand as he handled the sheets.
He was smooth with the sheets, clearly not sdelicate prince who's never lifted a finger.
His fingers were pale, long, and well-defined, exuding a sense of strength.
"Once he brought you back to that little cottage at Sunset Villa, you two just... got busy," Susan's words from earlier today blared in her mind at the most inappropriate time.
Sophia almost choked on the thought, quickly looking away and carefully smoothing out the sheets in a slight embarrassment, trying her best to ignore that awkward feeling.
But the more she told herself not to think about it, the harder her brain seemed to dwell on it.
Especially since she and Brandon were standing side by side, working on the closely on the bed, and with Brandon being tall, dark, and handswith amanding presence, standing next to him made her feel a bit cramped, particularly in the quiet solitude of a room with just the two of them at night. Even though she and Brandon had a kid together, which technically made them an old married couple, Sophia found she couldn't quite relax around him. She wondered if it was the amnesia that was making her tense and ufortable, because aside from being the father of her child, Brandon was pretty much a stranger to her now. She was starting to regret her impulsive decision to work together.
At first, she didn't think much of it; she just felt awkward standing around while Brandon was working, so she bent down to help straighten the sheets without considering that such a setting could feel a bit intimate.
Sophia tried to brush off the difort, but Susan's words about her and Brandon's past kept echoing in her mind, making Brandon's presence next to her all the more palpable.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmSophia silently recited a mantra in her mind to calm the chaos within, finally managing to get back to peaceful self, focusing solely on making the bed, with only the crease in the middle left to smooth out. Just as she reached to flatten it, Brandon's hand reached out too. Their knuckles accidentally brushed against each other.
They both froze for a moment.
Sophia's breath caught, feeling a tiny jolt of electricity from their touch that zipped through her nerves and raced straight to her heart, making it beat faster.
She couldn't help but look at Brandon.
Brandon was already turning to look at her, his eyes deep and calm, the inkiness so dark and intense like an unfathomable abyss, or as if it had a strong pull that sucked her gaze into it the moment their eyes met, locking her in place.
Brandon was silently observing her as well, his gaze traveling from her slightly widened eyes to her somewhat stunned face, and then back to her eyes again.
In that silent exchange of looks, as fragmented images flashed through Sophia's mind, Brandon suddenly leaned down, his palm sliding into her hair, and he kissed her, hard.
