Chapter 42 Chapter Forty Two I didn't know when exhaustion had overtaken me, but I must have fallen asleep amidst the comforting scent of Mariah. The weight of grief was too heavy, and sleep had claimed her as an escape, When I woke, the room was shrouded in an unnatural stillness. A coll draft brushed over my skin, and I realized I wasn't alone.

I turned my head, and there, sitting on the edge of the bed, was Mariah.

But it wasn't the Mariah I remembered.

Her clothes were torn and bloodied, her chest grotesquely ripped open as though her heart had been torn from her body. Blood smeared her face, and her once gentle eyes were clouded over, lifeless.

"Mariah?" I whispered, my voice trembling. I sat up, reaching out tentatively, my fingers shaking.

Mariah tilted her head, her lips curling into a strange, sorrowful smile. "You letdie, Stormi," she said, her voice a haunting echo.

"No," I cried, shaking my head vehemently. "No, Mariah, I'm so sorry Please forgive me. I didn't mean for this to happen." Mariah's smile faltered, her expression twisting into something colder, darker. "Now You have no one, Stormi. No one left." "Don't say that," I pleaded, tears streaming down my face. "Please, Mariah. I-" Then suddenly Mariah's body convulsed, her form distorting unnaturally. She threw her head back, letting out a laugh that sent chills my spine.

It wasn't Mariah's laugh.

I recognized that sinister sound-it was the smalevolent laugh I had heard in the woods.

The shadows in the room began to shift and writhe, coiling around Mariah like living tendrils. Suddenly, her body was swallowed by a massive, wolfish shadow. It loomed over me, its red eyes glowing like embers in the darkness.

The shadow leaned closer, its maw stretching wide as though to devour me.

"Run all you want, silver wolf," it hissed, its voice a sinister blend of whispers and growls. "You cannot escape me." "Stormi! Stormi, wake up!" Elijah's voice broke through the haze, and I felt his strong hands on my shoulders, shakinggently but firmly.

My eyes snapped open, and the room cback into focus. Elijah's m worried face hovered above me, his golden eyes filled with concern.

"It's okay," he said softly, brushing my damp short hair away from her m forehead "You're safe. It was just a nightmare."

1 let out a strangled sob, my chest heaving as I struggled to catch my breath. Tears streamed down my face, and I clutched at Elijah's shirt as though he were the only thing tetheringto reality. The door burst open, and Alex, Isaiah, and Austin rushed in, their expressions a mixture of panic and worry.
