Brenna raised her eyebrows, genuinely surprised. “Your brother seemed like a principled soldier to me; | didn’t

peg him as someone who'd bend so easily to his mother’s demands.”

Laughing gently, she couldn't help teasing Ethan, “I always imagined someone like you—born into wealth, raised

by influential parents—would’ve been pampered in your family. It never crossed my mind you’d spent your whole

life battling your mother’s controlling ways. You're quite something.”

Even Ethan had to admit his life was a mess of absurd . “I absolutely hate it when people try to dictate my

decisions or forceonto a path | don’t want to choose. So, when my mother tried meddling in our relationship,

| stood my ground. | would rather risk destroying my older brother's carefully planned future than sacrifice my

own happiness.”
