Chapter 146 Returning to the Manor

Today, Pablo returned to Argentum, and word had already spread ahead to notify the Valen family of his arrival.

Margaret had made all the preparations, cagerly awaiting her husband's return.

Naturally, she had already prepared her words for the cancellation of the engagement. Though not entirely

perfect, she knew Pablo’s temperament well-he cared deeply about face and would not be inclined to ask

questions afterward.

She was ready to face his anger, but she also knew that his temper flared quickly and dissipated just as fast.

After all, the engagement had already been called off. There was no need for further turmoil over it.

However, William was uneasy. The one thing he feared most in life was his father. So, he had summoned Agnes

back to the manor carly, hoping she could intercede on his behalf if Pablo lost his temper.

Agnes, seeing William drenched in sweat from worry, couldn't help but laugh. “Con now, Father is fierce, but

his temper comes and goes in a flash. All you need to do is take a few lashes, and it'll be over.”

William, looking even more terrified, replied, “You make it sound easy, but his lashes aren't something anyone

can bear. You've never been on the receiving end. I've been whipped by him before-three lashes, and | thought it

would kill me.”

Eleanor, overhearing their conversation, looked shocked. “Pablo really beats you? But you're his own son! Surely

he wouldn't...”

“Surely?!” William shot her a glare. “He’d killif he had to.”

“Don’t worry,” Eleanor reassured him. “I'll stand in front of you when the tcomes. Pablo wouldn't dare strike

me, would he?”

“Please don’t,” Agnes interjected, her voice cold. Ever since Milton's downfall, Agnes had becthoroughly

displeased with Eleanor, finding everything about her irksome. But she couldn't say it out loud, especially since

she had once encouraged Eleanor to marry into the Valen family.

Eleanor, however, dismissed their concerns. “The engagement is already broken, and the rest doesn’t matter. As

for Isolde, she’s wild, rude, and crude. Everyone knows that. How can she even compare to me?”

“If | behave well, Pablo will definitely change his mind,” Eleanor added, confidently.

“Mother, have you figured out what to say yet?” William asked, his anxiety mounting as he glanced at Margaret,

who had been silent up until now.

Margaret finally spoke, her tone measured. “We can’t deny our mistakes. Before we speak, you must kneel and

apologize. Admit that it was a moment of foolishness, that we didn’t want to cause Miss Langley any harm, which

is why we broke the engagement. “Don’t say anything else. Just kneel and confess. Leave the rest to me. Agnes,

you can throw in a few words as well, and bring up how Isolde caused trouble in the manor, even trying to kill

someone. “Pablo doesn't like vicious women, and if he learns that Isolde has murdered, his opinion of her will

change drastically.”

“That's right,” Agnes agreed.

Margaret looked around at the group, her gaze landing on Eleanor. “When Pablo returns, you of sight. Just stay in

your room. Your presence will only make things worse and might get Wil. further.”

Margaret's patience was thinning. “I’ve told you not to appear, so don’t argue. Do you understand?”

Eleanor swallowed her anger and replied meekly, “Yes.”

Margaret's voice softened. “At the end of the day, we were wrong. But Agnes, if your father isn’t too angry,

there's something you must say. You must explain that William wasn’t particularly interested in Isolde at first, but

out of respect for his father, he agreed to the engagement. “These words should only be spoken if Pablo isn't

furious. If he’s angry, don’t say them.”

Agnes smiled widely. “You're always so thorough, Mother. We made a mistake, but if we place the blon

Father, saying he forced the engagement without considering William's wishes, it will explain everything.”

“Exactly. You must choose the right moment,” Margaret advised.

Agnes patted William's hand reassuringly. “See? Mother has already thought it through. What's there to worry

about?”

William felt a little better, but he still couldn't shake the image of his father’s stern face. His fear lingered.

Just then, a servant burst in, rushing to announce, “Pablo has arrived at the western gate!”

The western gate was the entrance to the Valen family’s street, and they had already stationed people there to

await his arrival.

Margaret immediately stood, smoothing her hair and calling out, “Line up! Let's welcPablo back in triumph!”

She led the family and servants outside. Eleanor tried to follow, but Agnes stopped her. “Stay inside. Don’t rush.

Father will see you when he’s ready.”

Eleanor’s heart burned with injustice. She had to stay inside while even the servants were going out to greet

Pablo.

Margaret led the family to the entrance, where they stood waiting.

Torches were set up every ten steps along the street, casting a bright glow on the path. Crowds of people, eager

to greet Pablo, lined the sides of the street, and cheers rang out as Pablo approached.

Riding a majestic horse, wearing gleaming armor that caught the light of the torches, Pablo was flanked by his

generals. The crowd cheered as he acknowledged them with a wave. His presence stirred the people, and they

greeted him with even more enthusiasm.

Margaret watched with pride as her husband, hailed by the people, was celebrated as a hero. This man, whom

she had set her sights on all those years ago, had risen to greatness, and she had stood by him through it all.

As his figure grew clearer in the distance, Margaret's eyes misted over. He had finally returned safely.

When Pablo reached the gates of the manor, he dismounted, saluted the cheering crowd, and Margaret.

Margaret, her eyes brimming with tears, clutched her handkerchief and gazed at his strong features. “You've

finally cback,” she whispered.

“Yes, I'm home,” Pablo replied, his tone unchanged from before, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

Margaret knew that he wouldn't understand the situation, as no one would bring it up at a celebration like this.

After all, he had returned victorious, and no one would dare tarnish his triumph with personal matters.

“Father,” William and Agnes stepped forward. Agnes beamed at Pablo, but William looked uneasy.

Pablo nodded. “Ah, Agnes is back too? You two, cforward and greet your uncles.”

The household generals, living in the manor, were present too.

William and Agnes, however, had always treated them as little more than household servants, despite their

ranks in the army.

But now, they were family servants, and things had changed.
