Chapter 90 Prudence Is Back

Prudence returned to the Duke's estate on the 9th of August.

A grand procession accompanied her, with over a dozen carriages laden with their belongings.

Along with the old lady cVance, Priscilla, and her two granddaughters and two grandsons.

Geoffrey had already ordered everyone in the estate to cout and welcthem, including the grounded

Matilda and Michelle.

Isolde, of course, had to be there as well.

She stood beside Geoffrey, watching as several maids helped Prudence down from the carriage.

Dressed in a silk dress, her graying hair was styled into a high bun. Despite being in her sixties, she carried

herself with remarkable energy. Her long neck gave her an air of authority, and though her face bore deep

wrinkles at the corners of her eyes and mouth, her sharp gaze remained undiminished. Even with a gentle smile,

she exuded an undeniable aura of command.

Vance was currently in business in Caelmont and had once served as an official, but his career never took off.

After failing to secure a promotion, he attempted to buy his way up the ranks, only to be exposed by a righteous

superior, which led to his dismissal.

Since then, he had turned to business, though he never made much of a nfor himself. Over the years,

Prudence had discreetly used Prunella’s money to support him more times than she could count.

Despite being younger than Geoffrey, Vance’s indulgence in drinking, socializing, and other pleasures had taken

a toll on him, making him look even older than his brother.

His wife, Priscilla, cfrom a once prominent aristocratic family. Though her ancestors had held noble titles, by

her father’s generation, the hereditary honors had ceased.

Nevertheless, as a daughter of a noble house, she was tactful, socially adept, and skilled at winning her mother-

in-law’s favor, whose support had elevated her status in the household, surpassing even Matilda's.

Naturally, she looked down on Matilda. She once looked down on Prunella as well.

Although Prunella cfrom a distinguished family, to Priscilla, who considered herself true nobility, Prunella

was nothing more than the daughter of a military man-uncouth and utterly lacking in refinement.

What Priscilla took the most pride in was that she had given birth to a son and two daughters for the family,

while Prunella had only produced one troublesdaughter.

The most fascinating thing was that in her second year of marriage, she had arranged for Geoffrey to take a

concubine. The next year, the concubine gave birth to a son, making him the eldest of the next generation,

albeit illegitimate.

Hence, this gave Priscilla confidence in her position within the family.

When Geoffrey saw Prudence, he immediately stepped forward and greeted her with a bow. “Mother, you must

be exhausted from the journey. Please, cinside.”

Prudence acknowledged him with a nod, her expression warm with approval. “I had only just arrived in

Geoffrey was genuinely pleased receiving the praise, but he remained modest and said, “I'm flattered. After so

many years in the court, | have accomplished little and brought no honor to you. I'm ashamed.”

“You've already far surpassed your brother,” Prudence said with a smile, and her gaze briefly swept over Vance

with an unreadable expression. “Well? Aren't you going to greet Geoffrey?”

Vance hurried forward, grasping Geoffrey’s hands with excitement and saying, “Geoffrey, we haven't seen each

other for so long!”

“Vance!” Geoffrey responded with the warmth of brotherly affection.

Priscilla then stepped up, bringing her children with her. “Clark, Braden, Nicole, Martha, cgreet your uncle.”

Clark, born of a concubine, had been adopted into Geoffrey’s household when Prunella struggled to conceive,

making him Geoffrey's legal son in name.

After the four children paid their respects, Geoffrey regarded them with satisfaction, pleased by their graceful

demeanor.

Turning to Isolde, he called, “Isolde, cgreet your grandmother. Pay your respects to your uncle and aunt, and

meet your cousins.”

Prudence’s gaze landed on Isolde’s face.

Her eyes were sharp, filled with scrutiny and assessment. The wrinkles between her brows were deep, and

though there was a slight smile at the corners of her lips, she still felt unapproachable.

Isolde slowly stepped forward and bowed. “Greetings, Grandmother.”

Prudence gave a small hum of acknowledgment, and her expression softened a little as she said, “It's good that

you're back.”

After everyone had paid their respects, Matilda and Michelle stepped forward and greeted the old lady properly.

Prudence looked at Matilda and said, “It must have been hard on you while | was away.”

Matilda lowered her head and replied, “Please don’t say that, Mdm. Langley. It was only my duty.”

Prudence then turned to Michelle and noticed that she was wearing a veil. Her brows furrowed as she asked,

“Michelle, what's this? Why are you covering your face in this heat? Do you not wish to see me?”

Tears welled up in Michelle's eyes as she choked out, “No, Grandmother, it's not that. My face... it's too unsightly.

| don’t want to scare you.”

“Nonsense!” Prudence was furious. “I’ve seen your face since you were a child. Take off the veil at once!”

Michelle slowly removed it, revealing a face marred with scars. Her eyes were filled with silent grief, and tears

shimmered on her lashes.

Prudence’s expression stiffened in shock. “What happened? Why did you beclike this?”

Geoffrey stepped forward and said, “Mother, | will explain later. It's too hot outside. Let's go in first. I've had

schilled fruit juice prepared for you.”

Prudence gave a dignified nod and allowed Matilda and Priscilla to escort her inside.

Priscilla’s two daughters, Nicole and Martha, followed closely behind. Nicole was two years older than Isolde,

while Martha was a year younger.

Nicole had been engaged before, but her fiancé had long been ill. The wedding had been postponed again and

again until, this past spring, he suddenly passed away. Therefore, Nicole remained unmarried at the age

of 18.

One of the main reasons for Prudence’s return to Argentum was to arrange suitable matches for her

grandchildren.

Although Caelmont was prosperous, her ambitions had always been set on the political sphere.

Nicole's marriage was her greatest concern.

The young lady was beautiful and levelheaded, but her previous engagement held her back, and she was now

considered past the prmarrying age. Therefore, Prudence was anxious.

After taking just a few sips of coffee, she immediately instructed Matilda, “Start making inquiries. Find out which

young men have good character and family backgrounds. Write them all down, and we'll evaluate them carefully.

We need to settle Nicole’s marriage first.”

Matilda dared not refuse. Besides, she needed to redeem herself, so she quickly agreed. “Yes, Mdm. Langley. |

will call for a matchmaker tomorrow.”

“Good. Now, where is Bryant?” Prudence glanced around but did not see her grandson, and her tone turned

displeased.

Matilda quickly explained, “Mdm. Langley, Bryant went out a few days ago. He didn’t know you were arriving

today, so he wasn’t able to return in tto welcyou. Please forgive him.”

“Hmm. He's already seventeen, isn't he? His marriage needs to be arranged soon as well. Has he taken a liking

to anyone?” Prudence asked.

Matilda smiled and said, “He has, but Geoffrey doesn’t think she’s suitable.”

“Not suitable? Whose daughter is she? Is it because her family is of lower status? Don’t be too fixated on rank. A

good wife is one with virtue and kindness,” said Prudence.

Matilda replied, “The family is not low in status. It's just that the girl is a bit headstrong... She is Princess Estelle,

daughter of Marquis of Greystone.”
