"I can't promise anything on his behalf. But when he gets back, I'll pass on your message."
That was what she could help at most.
Brighton knew such words wouldn't lead to the outche desired. He believed Yasmine had spoken to Melvin, but over the years,
he'd never had the satisfaction of a reply.
For Melvin, it was merely a matter of fulfilling a duty.
After all, placing his father in the finest nursing home, ensuring he received top medical care when ill and providing him with more
money than he could spend was the extent of Melvin’s obligations.
As for the warmth of a father-son relationship, Brighton had never felt it.
Though he didn't expect Melvin to come, he still thanked Jocelyn as she left the nursing hin silence.
"My dad's health has been declining over the past few years. Each t| see him, he's filled with remorse. If he had one last wish,
it would be to see Melvin," Yasmine said as she drove.
"When was the last tMelvin saw your father?" Jocelyn asked.
"After mom died when Melvin was ten, he never saw him again. Dad's business went under, and he was forced to leave Yanova
City. Then, a few years back, he called me, saying he was sick and couldn't move around. | discussed it with Melvin to see how we
could settle him.
Melvin didn't think twice. He said to put him in a nursing home. He'd pay for it, keep him there until he passed away. Aside from
money, he wouldn't offer anything more. He didn't even want to think about visiting him," Yasmine explained. "Melvin is actually a
very sentimental person. It's just that when someone like that gets hurt, they shut down and refuse to give anything more."
Jocelyn could understand Melvin. If it were her, she wouldn't be so generous either.
Providing for his old years was already more than kind.
"Did you bringhere today because you hope I'd persuade Melvin to visit?"
Yasmine didn't deny it. "Before the new year, Dad was diagnosed with liver cancer. At that stage, there's no cure, and he didn't
want treatment. The doctor said he's living on borrowed time. So, I still hope to fulfill his wish before he passes."
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtThinking of Brighton's frail figure, Jocelyn knew he must be seriously ill to look so gaunt.
"I'll talk to Melvin when he gets back," Jocelyn made it clear. "Whether he goes or not is his decision. | won't push him."
"Understood," Yasmine said, her voice somber. "I don't even dare to mention Dad around Melvin anymore. That's why | haven't told
him about his sickness."
As they descended the mountain, Yasmine received a call that seemed to shatter her composure.
Jocelyn braced herself for the worst, fearing it was the nursing hon the line.
After the call, Yasmine was visibly shaken, tears streaking down her cheeks.
"What happened?" Jocelyn was concerned.
"I need to go to the airport," Yasmine said, wiping away her tears. "Zachary's been in an accident."
Jocelyn froze. She knew Zachary was Yasmine's ex-husband and that Melvin had sent him to rescue Castiel.
If Zachary was in trouble, did that mean Melvin was too?
"And Melvin?" Jocelyn's voice trembled.
Yasmine gripped the steering wheel, fighting to control her emotions. "He's fine."
Jocelyn breathed a sigh of relief but remained tense as they reached the airport. Yasmine grabbed her passport and rushed out,
"Jocelyn, take the car back."
Watching Yasmine dash into the terminal, Jocelyn could tell that her concern for her ex-husband was far from over.
She called Melvin, eager to hear his voice to calm her own fears.
With each ring, her anxiety heightened.
"Hello?"
Finally, a familiar voice cthrough.
"Are you okay?" Jocelyn asked, her voice laced with worry.
"Yeah."
"What does 'yeah' mean?"
"I'm fine," Melvin continued. "Is Yasmine at the airport?"
"Just went in," Jocelyn still concerned, "Something bad had happened to Mr. Turner?"
Melvin hesitated before admitting, "Yeah."
"Is it serious?"
"Yeah."
Understanding why Yasmine had burst into tears, Jocelyn fought back her own.
"You're really okay, right?" She couldn't believe Melvin could be fine if Zachary was hurt.
"Really, I'm fine. Don't worry. If | were in trouble, | wouldn't be answering your call," Melvin reassured her.
Jocelyn finally relaxed slightly but remained concerned. "If you can't save them, just let it be."
She was being selfish.
Castiel had gotten himself into this mess. He should have been prepared for the consequences.
She didn't want Melvin risking his life for Castiel's sake.
"Don't worry. | know what I'm doing," Melvin soothed her. "I wouldn't risk my life for him. He's not my woman. | don't need to
exchange my life for his."
Jocelyn's grip tightened, understanding his underlying message.
"Even if it were me, | wouldn't want you to risk your life."
Melvin chuckled softly, "But you are my life."
Those words tightened Jocelyn's chest.
"I have to go. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine for your sake, alright?"
The upward lilt in his voice hooked Jocelyn's soul, and she murmured an affirmative.
After hanging up, Jocelyn clutched her phone tightly, exhaling deeply before driving away from the airport.
As Yasmine emerged from the airport terminal, it was the early hours of a new day, the digital clock above the exit reading 4 AM.
With urgency propelling her every step, she hurried to Zachary's mansion, where she found a guard dutifully stationed at the
entrance.
Upon seeing her, the guard's expression shifted, showing a mix of surprise and concern as he moved to intercept her.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm"Mrs. Turner!" he exclaimed.
"Where is he?" Yasmine's voice quivered with barely contained emotion.
The guard exchanged a telling glance with his colleague and hesitated. "He's..."
"Out of my way!" Yasmine wasn't in the mood for any more words.
"Mrs. Turner, please, we're just following orders," the guard pleaded, clearly torn.
Yasmine's eyes narrowed. "Oh, so now my words carry no weight, right?"
The guard was indeed in a difficult position, especially considering what was happening in Zachary's bedroom.
Yasmine brushed past them without a second thought, the guards not daring to lay a hand on her. They followed at a distance,
maintaining the appearance of control.
Upon entering the house, Yasmine's heart sank as she saw a cadre of doctors waiting anxiously in the living room. The gravity of
the situation was palpable.
She dashed up the stairs to the bedroom, where yet another set of guards stood watch. Their expressions mirrored those she had
left behind downstairs—shocked and panicked at her showing up.
With a fierce glare that commanded more than words ever could, Yasmine shoved the bedroom door open.
Inside, alongside the medical team of doctors and nurses, was a young woman—a woman as out of place as wildflowers in a city
park.
