Chapter 117 No One Else Matters
Lewis reached out his hand and gently caressed her injured cheek from the slap. Blood
droplets had formed, resembling little beads, and it was unpleasant to the touch. He asked, ”
Does it hurt?”
Josephine pressed her lips and shook her head lightly.
Lewis picked Josephine up and walked to the emergency room.
Her knee bore numerous small glass shards, which the doctor meticulously removed using tweezers,
starting with the slightly larger fragments visible on the surface. The doctor then. cut open her jeans
and diligently cleaned out any remaining shards.
Josephine tilted her head slightly and saw Lewis standing beside her, staring intently as the doctor
tended to her wound. It took almost an hour to clean the wound thoroughly. The doctor explained,
“Fortunately, these are only superficial injuries, and there is no bone damage. The wound must be kept
dry, and the dressing must be changed regularly. It should heal within the next three to five days.”
Lewis lightly nodded and said, “Thank you.”
He picked Josephine up again and left the hospital. He drove them back home. He actually went above
and beyond for her, tending to every aspect with utmost care. He didn’t let Josephine set foot on the
ground from the hospital to their home. She sat on the bed, watching him come and go while fetching
water, cleaning her hands and face, and fetching porridge from downstairs.
She closed her eyes, leaned against the headboard, and pressed her fingers tightly together. She told
herself repeatedly not to indulge in this ephemeral kindness when the coldness and agony still lingered
in her memory. It would be pathetic to keep falling into the same trap.
Lewis held a bowl of porridge and sat down beside her. He said, “Finish this and rest early.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtJosephine opened her eyes and turned to look at him. Her eyes were filled with countless words, but
after a moment of silence, she just opened her mouth and bit into the spoon he offered. Josephine
quietly ate as he spooned her the porridge.
After finishing the porridge, he considerately covered her with the blanket. He stroked her hair and said,
“Rest well at home. I’ve changed the password for the front door. Don’t open it for anyone,
understand?”
Josephine grimaced, forcing a smile as she nodded.
“Go to bed,” he said and left immediately after. Her tears flowed down her face as the
bedroom door closed.
Lewis left the mansion and went straight to Alvarez Manor.
Nancy had already awakened, her forehead bandaged with gauze that bore traces of blood. Leaning
against the headboard, she wept inconsolably, pouring out her grievances to Daphne, who sat beside
her. “Lewis is utterly heartless! I was on the brink of death, yet he didn’t spare me a second glance.
How did I raise such an ungrateful child, Daphne?”
“Mom, you’re injured. Please don’t cry,” Daphne consoled.
“I’m heartbroken!” Nancy’s eyes were puffy from all the crying, and she grabbed her collar, straining to
breathe.
“How can he not be angry when you treat Josephine like that in front of him? You know very well
yourself how much he has cared for that mute since he was young.”
“Then how do you explain his relationship with Sierra?”
Daphne could not answer that question. She could not grasp what was going on in Lewis’ mind. He
couldn’t be labeled as a player since he only had two relationships, yet he couldn’t be considered
devoted because he was simultaneously involved with the two of them. He often neglected Josephine
for Sierra, yet he also refused to divorce Josephine. He was truly odd.
Nancy’s eyes showed a hint of bitterness once she had finished crying. “This damned mute is
absolutely intolerable. She actually managed to turn Lewis against me.”
Nancy hadn’t paid any attention to Josephine before. She felt disgusted whenever she saw her. She
had always treated her as if she were a pet belonging to the Alvarez family. Lewis didn’t take her
seriously either. He simply saw it as fulfilling Alan’s death wish to care for the wretched mute.
She was merely another mouth to feed even if she stayed, posing no threat. But it wasn’t until Nancy
punished Josephine this time that she realized things weren’t exactly as they appeared. She must have
overlooked something that would cause her son to forsake her well-being in favor of that mute.
Nancy couldn’t make sense of anything. To alleviate the overwhelming bitterness in her heart, the only
solution she could conceive was to make Josephine disappear entirely.
Daphne’s eyes lit up as she heard those words. She fanned the flames by saying, “Mom, I told you
before, this mute is not that simple. She went to the company to seduce Seth. You didn’t believe me
then, but do you believe it now?”
Nancy’s gaze flickered. She was thinking about something and remained silent.
Lewis entered the mansion, and the housekeeper came forth to greet him with a smile,” Master Lewis,
welcome back.”
“Where are they?”
The housekeeper’s expression froze. She had thought that Lewis had come back to check on Nancy.
Who would have thought that he was here for the two household staff? Just how much
2/3
did he care about his mother’s well-being?
The housekeeper spoke sarcastically, “They are still kneeling at the back. Madam fainted this
afternoon, and everyone panicked. No one had time for them. By the way, Madam just woke up. You
should see her. Otherwise, she’ll be heartbroken.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“Okay,” Lewis agreed casually and went upstairs.
Mrs. Wolsey had reported his arrival the moment she spotted him. As a result, when Lewis entered the
room, he found Nancy lying in bed, weakly staring at the ceiling with hollow eyes, crying.
“You’re here, Lewis. Please comfort Mom. Wouldn’t you feel terrible if something happened to her?”
Daphne said.
Lewis stood by the bed and stared at Nancy for a moment.
Sensing the situation, Daphne tactfully walked out, leaving them alone in the bedroom. Nancy did not
look at him as she wiped her tears away with her hand. “What are you doing here? It’s too soon to send
condolences because I’m not dead yet.”
Lewis sat down. He propped one leg over the other as he watched her silently. Nancy finally turned her
head to look at him after observing his silence. “Get out! Return to your beloved mute’s side. You don’t
have to be concerned about my life or death!”
Lewis finally spoke, “Aren’t you tired?”
Nancy was stunned. She asked, “What do you mean?”
“I mean, aren’t you tired of acting?”
Those remarks ignited the rage in Nancy’s heart. She sat up swiftly from her bed. “Do you still have a
conscience, Lewis? I am your biological mother! You accuse me of acting even in this state?”
“Conscience? Isn’t this what you wanted?” Lewis sneered.
Nancy froze, lost for words. She had indeed said that a man should learn to be heartless and that a
husband should be ruthless. But she had never taught him to be so ruthless as to ignore. his own
mother!
“Lewis, is that mute really so important to you?”
Lewis’ gaze momentarily flickered, but he quickly regained his calm and collected manner.
“No one is important to me. Not her, and not you too.”
Nancy turned pale. She asked, “What did you say?”
“I don’t mind repeating myself if you want to hear it again.
